The housecleaning is coming. And the San Diego Chargers won't go halfway.

Breer: Finding future GMs

Albert Breer says teams in the market for a GM will want a candidate who can help build a stable work environment. More ...

Kevin Acee of the U-T San Diego reported Thursday that general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner will be fired at the end of the season. Acee's sources said that Chargers president Dean Spanos "essentially decided at least a month ago" that Turner would be let go. Spanos also decided recently that Smith will be let go.

Similar rumblings occurred late last season, but Spanos changed his mind and kept Turner around.

"Those with knowledge of plans that are already in motion said it seems certain there will be no last-minute change of heart this time," Acee wrote.

Norv Turner through the years

Take a look at photos of Norv Turner through the years.

Smith's track record as a talent evaluator has taken hits in recent years, especially with free-agency mistakes, like signing Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal. Smith has also failed to keep talented players like Vincent Jackson and Darren Spoles.

He's found some good defensive players, like defensive tackle Corey Liuget and linebackers Donald Butler and Melvin Ingram in the draft as of late, but the offense has decayed. Still, the succession plan after Smith doesn't inspire confidence.

Acee reports that director of player personnel Jimmy Raye is in line to take over for Smith. The owner's son, John Spanos, is expected to eventually take over the Chargers' football operations.

If nothing else, this report will be popular among Chargers fans. Even if it's a year too late.

Chargers coach Norv Turner has reportedly conceded that he'll be fired after this season.

During Sunday's broadcast of the Chargers' stunning win in Pittsburgh, CBS' Jim Nantz said Turner told him, "we all know in the end what the final outcome will be." The Union-Tribune has already reported that owner Dean Spanos plans to can Turner and GM A.J. Smith as soon as the final whistle sounds. The Chargers have missed the playoffs in three straight seasons, going 22-23 during that span. One late-season upset is highly unlikely to change Spanos' plans.

I hope Musgrave gets fired and Turner is willing to take an offensive coordinator position with my vikings :D Probably a pipe dream though.

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports coach Norval Turner will have his choice of "at least five" offensive coordinator jobs once he's dismissed by the Chargers.

According to reporter Kevin Acee, the Jets "could be interested," but it's not a job Turner would take. Turner's failings as a head coach are well documented, but he remains regarded as one of the finer play-callers in the league. He should land in a strong situation.

Garrett isn't relinquishing the offensive play-calling duties as long as he's your HC ...
