Jags release SS Dawan Landry

Recommended Posts

The Jacksonville Jaguars will release safety Dawan Landry on Friday, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Landry, who signed with the Jaguars in 2011 after spending his first five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, was expected to make $5.35 for the upcoming campaign.

Landry, 30, played in 32 games in his two seasons in Jacksonville, registering 197 tackles and three interceptions. He has 559 tackles and 12 interceptions in 98 career games.

Hmmm... safety is really deep this year, so makes sense to get someone with the same ability for waaaaay cheaper. That was way too much to be paying a SS. Won't be surprised if Poz gets released next year too (getting paid way too much for a MLB.) Ditto for Jeremy Mincey (doesn't fit new defensive scheme.)

EDIT: This just in, they cut the human waste of space that is Aaron Ross as well:

The Jaguars have released cornerback Aaron Ross today.

Earlier Friday, they released safety Dawan Landry.

Ross,30, signed a three-year, $9.75 million contract before last year. He started nine of 14 games, making 65 tackles but no interceptions.

Ross joins Rashean Mathis and possibly Derek Cox as Jaguars cornerbacks who won’t be back this year.

David Sullivan, the agent for Cox, said in an email today he and the Jaguars have exchanged contract numbers but he expects Cox to hit the open market at midnight as well as the signing period on Tuesday.

The Jaguars have only two cornerbacks under contract for 2013 -- Mike Harris and Kevin Rutland.

Although the move was likely based on performance and not money, Ross’ release does create salary cap space. He was due a $4.04 cap number this year, but now will have only $666,667 of “dead money” on the cap, creating more than $3 million of additional room. That puts the Jaguars nearly $30 million under the cap.

Ross came to the Jaguars after five years (two Super Bowl titles) and 10 interceptions with the New York Giants.

Going younger, maybe? Cutting Landry doesn't make a ton of sense, but whatever.

Ross is by far one of the unluckiest players on the team. One play he'll get a pick that'll get negated by a penalty on someone else, the next play he'll get burnt for a big gain.

All in all, how did Landry do as a Jaguar?

Solid. Was a little spotty in coverage at times. Limited in range. But he was solid. Not worth $5.4 million a year however. Especially considering SS isn't a premium position. If someone can sign him to a much much cheaper deal, they'll get a good bargain. Still a solid player. Just Gene Smith signed him to a horrible contract (for the Jags, obviously not for Dawan.)

Another thing with this... Dave Caldwell spent a lot of times under Polian in the Colts front office. The Colts don't value OLB or SS much. They usually fill that spot with low round draft picks, bargain stop gap Free Agents and/or undrafted free agents. So we might be seeing that now with him and the Jags, he took one look at the SS making 5.4 million a year and thought, "the fuck?" then made the move. Lots of options in the draft and UDFA at safety.
