I'd want to see numbers on the adoption issue because both sides say they're acting for the benefit of the children and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as both arguments have an internal logic, I'd just want to see the numbers to know which side is making the accurate argument. As for the logic behind the arguments, the argument for requiring organizations that do adoption to consider gay couples is more obvious, you have a wider pool of adoptive parents to draw from. The other argument takes a bit more to work through, but makes just as much sense. The issue Republicans say they're fighting is that when faced with the choice of allowing gay couples to adopt or leave the market some organizations will choose to leave the market (those organizations can go fuck themselves, but I'll get into that later). If other organizations aren't stepping up to fill the void they leave then the adoption process gets more difficult. Personally, I hate the idea of not allowing a couple to adopt a child simply because they don't have the right number of penises. Any organization that chooses to stop facilitating adoptions altogether rather than facilitate a gay couple adopting is putting their own beliefs ahead of the best interests of children, and to be clear I don't like the idea of the government supporting that. However, if allowing federal funds to go to organizations that don't want to facilitate gay couples adopting will increase the number of organizations facilitating adoptions then adoptions become easier, and I support that. That's why I say I want to see numbers, because without numbers to measure the impact this policy will have on actual adoption rates we're purely arguing our beliefs and we're barely giving any consideration to the actual interests of the children going through the adoption process. I think we can all agree that the overall goal should be increasing adoptions and getting children into good homes, I'll support whichever side of this can demonstrate that their position will actually achieve that goal.

I did this last year and I thought it was a helpful way to give everyone else a little preview of your team for the coming season. I actually think the Titans may have some people with decent shots at some of these, so here goes: MVP: Marcus Mariota - no real shot at the award, but if anyone but him is our most valuable player than we've fucked up OPOTY: Derrick Henry - lots of good options here actually. Obviously Mariota should be a candidate, but I'm going to act like MVP and OPOTY are distinct awards. Delanie Walker is always reliable, and even though he's getting up in age he's reached the point where I'll believe he's declining when I see it. Corey Davis should have a big season if the end of last season was any indication. Dion Lewis should fill the statsheet like few others. But ultimately I think we still lean on the run and Henry will thrive with the opportunity. DPOTY: Kevin Byard - again this is a tough call. Orakpo and Morgan should both be solid, but with their age and (hopefully) good young guys behind them they should both be rotational guys. Casey is always solid and certainly wouldn't be a bad choice. But, I think this is the year Byard becomes a household name, he's got a great group of corners in front of him so he can just free range it behind them, we saw him burst on the scene among folks who follow the sport really closely last year, this year I think everyone learns his name (maybe even Deion Sanders). OROTY: Akrum Wadley? - this is not a good spot, I'm listing an UDFA who might not even make the team, but I guess that's what happens when the only draft pick you spend on offense goes to a developmental/backup QB DROTY: Rashaan Evans - maybe it's cheating to just put our first draft pick in here, but I think he joins the pantheon of Bama linebackers who make an immediate impact. We haven't invested in the ILB position in a long time, so this needs to pay off. Harold Landry is also a possibility, but I'm expecting him to be lightly used in rotation behind Orakpo and Morgan while Evans should be a three down backer from the jump. I may be overselling it a bit, but I actually think Evans could have a shot at the award leaguewide. Comeback POTY: Jack Conklin - I'm really not sure he would even qualify since he didn't miss any time, but coming back from a torn ACL is still tough, we also were pretty lucky on the injury front so I don't think we have any better candidates. Tajae Sharpe has a decent case, but I'm not sure he'd demonstrated his value enough to really be a comeback story with only one season before spending all of last year on IR, he also could end up buried in the WR depth chart.

I'd say the top ended up okay, I might not have given the exact same order, but I'd probably have mostly those players in my top 25, the issues are later. I won't even address how big of an issue I think it is to have a kicker at #53 because that horse is long dead by now. I am however going to come back to the issue of having Deshaun Watson and Jimmy Garoppolo in the rankings already. I think both benefited from the format by being on generally weak teams (I can only think of three Texans I'd absolutely put ahead of Watson and two of them were hurt most of last season and I can't think of any 49ers offhand that I'd put ahead of Jimmy) neither of them should be anywhere near the top 12 QBs right now. And so that nobody can accuse me of simply being negative, here's a list of QBs I'd replace them with, in no particular order and probably not an exclusive list: Alex Smith Derek Carr Eli Manning Cam Newton Jameis Winston Marcus Mariota Joe Flacco I could even make an argument for Jacoby Brissett given what he did with so little for a full season in Indy. Certainly this post may not age well, but in terms of top players right now Watson and Garoppolo are glaringly bad inclusions even at the end of the top 100.

One interesting comment I've heard about the anthem policy is that a lot of players end up in the locker room right before the game for completely random reasons: last minute medical treatment or adjustments, bathroom breaks, pregame routine, now anyone who's in the locker room for that shit is gonna have to explain what they were doing or everyone will assume it's an anthem protest. Just reinforces that no matter what you do there will be unintended consequences. As for the kickoff rules, if I'm a special teams coordinator I'm chomping at the bit to take advantage of all of the open space return teams are going to have to leave and trying to design deep onside kicks to those areas.

The first thing that needs to happen: we need to get rid of the ridiculous rules against the use of federal money to study gun violence (if you're not familiar with this, here you go: Dickey Amendment - Wikipedia) then do some real research into the gun violence in this country. That said, the lack of solid research shouldn't be an excuse for inaction and there are definitely some steps that should be taken. I think gun reform needs to happen, I don't think we need a lot more laws on that, and it'd vary by state based on existing laws, but requiring a certification of safety training seems like a good start. The biggest argument I've heard against gun restrictions is the second amendment, but that really shouldn't be a major consideration when enacting legislation, do what seems like it'll do the most good and let the courts deal with constitutionality. I also think putting more resources into schools would help, make it easier for teachers to work with smaller groups of students, make it easier to spot when students are having issues and make it easier to intervene earlier. I think arming teachers is a terrible idea because I don't think it's going to do much good and I think it's going to cause more problems. I'm not even talking about the threat of teachers misusing guns, though that is a huge potential problem, I'm thinking of how I would have reacted to knowing that a teacher has a gun, it would be extremely distracting. I also just don't think teachers should have that added responsibility.
