Fair enough, that's what I get for posting without looking into it
-
Not even a mention of Kevin Byard?
-
It'd be kinda fun to see Lebron v. Warriors part 5 happen in the first round
-
I did this last year and I thought it was a helpful way to give everyone else a little preview of your team for the coming season. I actually think the Titans may have some people with decent shots at some of these, so here goes:
MVP: Marcus Mariota - no real shot at the award, but if anyone but him is our most valuable player than we've fucked up
OPOTY: Derrick Henry - lots of good options here actually. Obviously Mariota should be a candidate, but I'm going to act like MVP and OPOTY are distinct awards. Delanie Walker is always reliable, and even though he's getting up in age he's reached the point where I'll believe he's declining when I see it. Corey Davis should have a big season if the end of last season was any indication. Dion Lewis should fill the statsheet like few others. But ultimately I think we still lean on the run and Henry will thrive with the opportunity.
DPOTY: Kevin Byard - again this is a tough call. Orakpo and Morgan should both be solid, but with their age and (hopefully) good young guys behind them they should both be rotational guys. Casey is always solid and certainly wouldn't be a bad choice. But, I think this is the year Byard becomes a household name, he's got a great group of corners in front of him so he can just free range it behind them, we saw him burst on the scene among folks who follow the sport really closely last year, this year I think everyone learns his name (maybe even Deion Sanders).
OROTY: Akrum Wadley? - this is not a good spot, I'm listing an UDFA who might not even make the team, but I guess that's what happens when the only draft pick you spend on offense goes to a developmental/backup QB
DROTY: Rashaan Evans - maybe it's cheating to just put our first draft pick in here, but I think he joins the pantheon of Bama linebackers who make an immediate impact. We haven't invested in the ILB position in a long time, so this needs to pay off. Harold Landry is also a possibility, but I'm expecting him to be lightly used in rotation behind Orakpo and Morgan while Evans should be a three down backer from the jump. I may be overselling it a bit, but I actually think Evans could have a shot at the award leaguewide.
Comeback POTY: Jack Conklin - I'm really not sure he would even qualify since he didn't miss any time, but coming back from a torn ACL is still tough, we also were pretty lucky on the injury front so I don't think we have any better candidates. Tajae Sharpe has a decent case, but I'm not sure he'd demonstrated his value enough to really be a comeback story with only one season before spending all of last year on IR, he also could end up buried in the WR depth chart.
-
I may come back and do some of the stats, for now I'm just doing the awards:
MVP: Tom Brady
Defensive Player of Year: Khalil Mack
Offensive Player of Year: Todd Gurley
Comeback Player: JJ Watt
Offensive Rookie of Year: Josh Rosen
Defensive Rookie of Year: Bradley Chubb
Coach of Year: Hue Jackson (fight me)

I was on vacation and completely missed that Trotz is out...what the hell happened?
Here's a detailed explanation: Barry Trotz is stepping down as head coach of the Washington Capitals Russian Machine Never Breaks
Short version: Trotz's contract was essentially up, winning the Cup triggered an optional two year extension that would have paid him $1.8M per year, he wanted $5M and a longer term. Couldn't agree on money, and the Caps had Reirden as the coach in waiting, we'd named him assistant head coach two years ago and didn't let him interview with other teams, so we already had the succession plan in place. Based on all of that I think this made the most sense.
-
I'm pretty happy with Rierden as head coach, and we've had a great offseason. Unloading Orpik's contract was awesome, then using the space to get Carlson a long term deal, then bringing back Devo and Kempny. We're pretty well set up for next season. Only problem is it sounds like Beagle is gonna sign somewhere else.

I just saw the NFL.com article on this and it adds some interesting details, for one this was a negotiated punishment, it'll be interesting to see if that's the way the league does these going forward to avoid taking them to court. It also included this bit:
The NFL "concluded that Winston violated the personal conduct policy by touching the driver in an inappropriate and sexual manner without her consent and that disciplinary action was necessary and appropriate." As part of of his discipline, Winston is required to obtain a clinical evaluation and fully cooperate in any recommended program of therapeutic intervention."A failure either to obtain the evaluation or to cooperate with treatment will result in further discipline," the league said in a statement. "In addition, a future violation of the personal conduct policy will result in more substantial discipline, including a potential ban from the NFL."It's interesting that they go as far as to mention a potential ban, I have trouble seeing them go through with that unless there's something really egregious

Lol you can't see how stupid that reasoning is? There's no such thing as a burden of proof. Either something happened or it didnt. By this definition, you are allowed to believe anything and everything just because you want to. Lol hiw stupid does one need to be to not see the hole in that stupid reasoning.
You sitting at home reading an article is proof it happened? You believing media is proof it happened? You're the one with gaping holes in your logic.
Burden of proof is the dumbest argument ever. Either something exists or happened or it didnt. Can you prove something doesn't exist, when it doesn't exist in the first place? No one can prove god.
Just like people believe the bible is the word of God..you believe media is the word of truth.
Burden of proof is the laziest ,dumbed down fucking logic ever. It's an excuse to stay stupid. It's so fucking backwards, it's hilarious

How is moving on from a qb taken #2 overall distinct from giving up on him?Its not so much about giving up on him as it is moving on to someone better lol
-
Anybody ready to give up on Mariota hasn't actually watched him play
-
holy shit, that happened, one of my good friends came up for the game last night, which is why I'm just now getting on here, I've watched a lot of games with him and there's nobody I'd rather share that moment with, that was fucking awesome, I'm glad it was a tight, entertaining game to close it out, the 6-2 game 4 was awesome, but to close it out in tight fashion was awesome and showcased the resilience of this team, gave up the lead in the second period? don't care, and everyone chipping in, loved Eller's GWG, I can't say enough about how fucking awesome this is, this is the team that did it, year 3 of a 2 year plan and we just did it, it's gonna take a lot of self control to not wear a Caps t-shirt to court today

That said, I'm a sentimentalist, so if Washington is destined to win the Cup, let them win it on home ice.
No, just win the fucking thing, I don't care where it happens. We can't mess around with this, we've been on the wrong end of enough series comebacks already. Take the momentum we've got and wrap it up Thursday. GO CAPS!

I'd say the top ended up okay, I might not have given the exact same order, but I'd probably have mostly those players in my top 25, the issues are later. I won't even address how big of an issue I think it is to have a kicker at #53 because that horse is long dead by now.
I am however going to come back to the issue of having Deshaun Watson and Jimmy Garoppolo in the rankings already. I think both benefited from the format by being on generally weak teams (I can only think of three Texans I'd absolutely put ahead of Watson and two of them were hurt most of last season and I can't think of any 49ers offhand that I'd put ahead of Jimmy) neither of them should be anywhere near the top 12 QBs right now.
And so that nobody can accuse me of simply being negative, here's a list of QBs I'd replace them with, in no particular order and probably not an exclusive list:
Alex Smith
Derek Carr
Eli Manning
Cam Newton
Jameis Winston
Marcus Mariota
Joe Flacco
I could even make an argument for Jacoby Brissett given what he did with so little for a full season in Indy. Certainly this post may not age well, but in terms of top players right now Watson and Garoppolo are glaringly bad inclusions even at the end of the top 100.

When does it end? I mean I get they are the most important position on the field but when you are spending a 5th of the cap on QB, An 8th on a pass rusher, and a 10th on left tackle, that is almost half the cap on 3 dudes. At some point the market has to equalize or they have to get rid of the cap altogether.
but who's paying a top player at all three of those positions? that's what the salary cap does, it forces teams to choose where they're going to spend their money and keeps teams from stockpiling top players
and the reason players are okay with the salary cap is that it also comes with a salary floor that ensures players receive a minimum percentage of revenue
-
I coups be wrong, but I didn't think there was an official policy before this
-
One interesting comment I've heard about the anthem policy is that a lot of players end up in the locker room right before the game for completely random reasons: last minute medical treatment or adjustments, bathroom breaks, pregame routine, now anyone who's in the locker room for that shit is gonna have to explain what they were doing or everyone will assume it's an anthem protest. Just reinforces that no matter what you do there will be unintended consequences.
As for the kickoff rules, if I'm a special teams coordinator I'm chomping at the bit to take advantage of all of the open space return teams are going to have to leave and trying to design deep onside kicks to those areas.

This was one of the Final Four matchups, do we really need to do it again?

The first thing that needs to happen: we need to get rid of the ridiculous rules against the use of federal money to study gun violence (if you're not familiar with this, here you go: Dickey Amendment - Wikipedia) then do some real research into the gun violence in this country.
That said, the lack of solid research shouldn't be an excuse for inaction and there are definitely some steps that should be taken. I think gun reform needs to happen, I don't think we need a lot more laws on that, and it'd vary by state based on existing laws, but requiring a certification of safety training seems like a good start. The biggest argument I've heard against gun restrictions is the second amendment, but that really shouldn't be a major consideration when enacting legislation, do what seems like it'll do the most good and let the courts deal with constitutionality.
I also think putting more resources into schools would help, make it easier for teachers to work with smaller groups of students, make it easier to spot when students are having issues and make it easier to intervene earlier. I think arming teachers is a terrible idea because I don't think it's going to do much good and I think it's going to cause more problems. I'm not even talking about the threat of teachers misusing guns, though that is a huge potential problem, I'm thinking of how I would have reacted to knowing that a teacher has a gun, it would be extremely distracting. I also just don't think teachers should have that added responsibility.

You know what? I know the title of this thread is "Civil Discourse" but I can't do that right now because PhilElliot, you need to shut the fuck up. This is fucking happening and you questioning it serves no function because you won't even admit that the fucking Titanic sunk because you weren't fucking there. I could tell you about conversations I've had with friends who were at Virginia Tech in 2007 (my Freshman year of college, I was at William and Mary, but a lot of people from my high school went to Tech) but you wouldn't believe the terror they described. I could tell you about conversations I've had with my girlfriend, who's a fifth grade teacher, about when they do lockdown drills and how terrified her kids are (btw, this is why they so often have lockdown drills shortly before these shootings, they're doing lockdown drills all the fucking time because this keeps fucking happening) I could tell you about how she's gotten a door stop just in case, or about how she keeps her door locked at all times because that can be enough of a deterrent to a school shooter. I could tell you about how she's come to the conclusion that she wouldn't be able to fit through her window, but some of her kids might, and that she's thought about how she could break the window to potentially get some of them out. I could get someone from Santa Fe Texas (I actually might have the connections to do that, a friend of a friend on Facebook posted that it happened a few miles from their house, so I could probably make it happen) to tell you about their first hand experience. I could do any of that, but it would do no good because you wouldn't fucking believe it because you're an imbecile who doesn't believe anything exists beyond what's two feet in front of your fucking face.
I'll get to some actual constructive commentary in a bit, but for now I just wanted to tell PhilElliot to shut the fuck up, if you're going to question the crisis we have going on in this country that is mass shootings, particularly in schools, then you have no place commenting in a thread about how to address that crisis. I also wanted to make this post to assure any casual posters or any guests that may be viewing this thread that PhilElliot absolutely does not speak for the TGP community. Nobody else questions the reports of these shootings (though I guess Sean is going a little tin-hat on us, he's still accepting the fact that the shootings are happening) and believe it or not we can have an intelligent conversation about topics even as sensitive as this.

Well, Antwaun Woods was just waived (injured) so there's one probably wrong already
-
Odds to win it all were 500-1, not sure of odds to win the WestI wonder what the odds were for Vegas making the SCF before the season started... Crazy to think they're just two wins away from getting to the last dance.

I went with 9-11, but we can absolutely exceed that, we're gonna be better than last year, but we also habe a much more difficult schedule (NFCE and AFCE instead of NFCW and AFCN)

I'd want to see numbers on the adoption issue because both sides say they're acting for the benefit of the children and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as both arguments have an internal logic, I'd just want to see the numbers to know which side is making the accurate argument.
As for the logic behind the arguments, the argument for requiring organizations that do adoption to consider gay couples is more obvious, you have a wider pool of adoptive parents to draw from. The other argument takes a bit more to work through, but makes just as much sense. The issue Republicans say they're fighting is that when faced with the choice of allowing gay couples to adopt or leave the market some organizations will choose to leave the market (those organizations can go fuck themselves, but I'll get into that later). If other organizations aren't stepping up to fill the void they leave then the adoption process gets more difficult.
Personally, I hate the idea of not allowing a couple to adopt a child simply because they don't have the right number of penises. Any organization that chooses to stop facilitating adoptions altogether rather than facilitate a gay couple adopting is putting their own beliefs ahead of the best interests of children, and to be clear I don't like the idea of the government supporting that. However, if allowing federal funds to go to organizations that don't want to facilitate gay couples adopting will increase the number of organizations facilitating adoptions then adoptions become easier, and I support that.
That's why I say I want to see numbers, because without numbers to measure the impact this policy will have on actual adoption rates we're purely arguing our beliefs and we're barely giving any consideration to the actual interests of the children going through the adoption process. I think we can all agree that the overall goal should be increasing adoptions and getting children into good homes, I'll support whichever side of this can demonstrate that their position will actually achieve that goal.
