Red Sox, Adrian Gonzalez agree to seven-year extension

Gonzalez has agreed to a seven-year, $154 million deal.

Gonzalez, 28, was acquired from the San Diego Padres this past offseason in exchange for three minor leaguers and outfielder Eric Patterson. The trade nearly fell through because the Red Sox and Gonzalez, who was set to become a free agent after the 2011 season, were unable to come to an agreement on an extension. The two sides agreed to resume talks at a later date.

From 2006-10 with the Padres, Gonzalez averaged 32 homers and 100 RBIs, with a .288 batting average and a .374 on-base percentage.

In 11 games with the Red Sox this season, Gonzalez is hitting .268 with a homer, seven RBIs and a .362 on-base percentage.

Gonzalez's seven-year deal comes on the heels of the seven-year, $142 contract that left fielder Carl Crawford signed with the team as a free agent in December.

Just more momentum building towards Pujols getting $30 mill per year.

Hey guys we're 2-10 and have already benched Crawford for a game, so we're going to sign someone to a big ass extension!

Makes perfect sense.

Carl is absolutely worthless in Boston's LF. And now that he's got that payday he doesn't even care anymore. Hope the Sox are glad they got him instead of Werth. CC's just another Vernon Wells.
