ATL_Predator+ 1,196 Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) Saints released SS Roman Harper. DE Will Smith's release cleared $11.55 million in cap space, while Harper's saves the Saints $2.18 million. Harper, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, was part of a safety rotation along with Kenny Vaccaro and Malcolm Jenkins for much of last season. He performed well in the playoffs but is 31 years old and battled a knee injury in 2013. Harper joins a crowded free-agent safety market and will likely have to settle for a one- or two-year deal with little-to-no guaranteed money. Related: Saints The San Francisco Chronicle "can really see" the Raiders being interested in free agent DE Will Smith. Smith was released by the Saints on Wednesday and is free to sign with any other team immediately. Coach Dennis Allen was the Saints' assistant defensive line coach from 2006-2007 and was on the New Orleans staff until 2010. Those were Smith's glory days. All four of Oakland's defensive line starters from 2013 are free agents, but GM Reggie McKenzie needs to be aiming much higher. He has over $60 million in cap space. Smith is best-suited as a backup. Suspension and injury have limited Vilma to just 12 total games over the past two seasons. Two months shy of his 32nd birthday, Vilma has been playing through knee issues since 2011. He made only one appearance in 2013 before landing on injured reserve. Even if he can prove he's healthy, Vilma will have trouble tracking down guaranteed money on the open market. He won't be a starter in 2014. Source: Profootballtalk on NBCSports.com Edited February 13, 2014 by ATL
ATL_Predator+ 1,196 Posted February 13, 2014 Saints released CB Jabari Greer. Greer joins DE Will Smith and SS Roman Harper as long-time Saints who were given their pink slips Wednesday. New Orleans cleared nearly $17 million in cap space with the three terminations. Greer could have a case to recoup some of his money because he's recovering from ACL surgery, but that will be handled at a later time. The 32-year-old has played a full 16-game season just once in the past six years. Greer will struggle to find multi-year offers in free agency. Glanvilles Grits 142 Posted February 13, 2014 Good moves by the Saints. Everyone should have seen the Vilma move coming though a couple years ago when they paid Curtis Lofton pretty good money to come from Atlanta. They just don't need Vilma anymore. Lofton is younger, and I believe the better LBer at this point.
