Razor's Ramblings: What if the 2018 Season ended at halftime?

Recommended Posts

So, a dumb thought occurred to me, as they often do when I'm bored. What would an NFL season look like if teams just stopped playing after two quarters? The conceit was that some teams just look really good at half time, and then thanks to poor adjustments, or no adjustments, fold entirely down the stretch. To deal with the potential of ties, I treated a game's third quarter as overtime if it was necessary, and the leader at that point would be considered the winner. if the game was still tied after 3, the first team to score in the 'overtime' would be crowned the winner, or I'd count it as a tie if it was scoreless.

Here are the results up to the halfway point of the season, and I'll be crunching the numbers for the second half in a little while.

Interesting. I think this would be a really cool stat to judge coaching staves over the long-term. Are they making half-time adjustments? Are they coming in unprepared? What are the long-term trends?

Saints and Rams both had some good halftime adjustments it looks like. Also the Packers had no consistency at first glance with 7 games having different outcomes but only gaining a half game through it all.
