Razor's QB Watch 2011

Recommended Posts

Aaron Rodgers scews the averages so much, that I'm doing the tiers based off of the average stats of all QB's sans Rodgers. so now the tiers look like:

Comp% > 63.22 = Elite

Comp%

TD:INT > 1.80 = Elite

TD:INT

YPA > 7.50 = Elite

YPA

We've got another new addition, John Skelton joins the mix after another start and another victory given in his name. He's a terrible QB, but his team happens to be 3-1 when he starts. OMG QB CONTROVERSY GUYS! Pretty sweet shit, here's how the rest of your guys are faring at the moment.

Guest Phailadelphia

I think these last 2 weeks are the first times Romo has ever broken into the elite category. He's always been right ON the cusp. Nice.

this season yeah, I'm sure when I was tracking in 09 he was there a couple of times. Can't say the same for 2010, but he was close when healthy.

Vince Young is a new addition to this list, as we have now reached 40 QB's with 100+ attempts. There are quite a few more QB's who could sneak onto this list by the end of the season, including Caleb Hanie, TJ Yates, and the indispensible AJ Feeley.

Hasselbeck's stats are getting killed by drops. He's a good bit better than his numbers show right now. I don't think he was elite as stated in the first few editions of this QB rating, but he's on that good level, IMO.

This is pure math, a player is given a rank in completion percentage, TD:INT ratio and YPA. The better you are in one of those categories, the lower your score is. 3 is the lowest possible score (1's in everything), while with 40 QB's the lowest score possible is 120. A score in the 57-66 range is average.

3/4 of the Season Rankings:

1. Aaron Rodgers (4) [0]

Another first place spot for Aaron, who has been playing amazingly this year. However, the one person keeping him from firsts in all spots is Tim Tebow and his ridiculous 10:1 TD:INT Ratio.

2. Tom Brady (8) [0]

Brady solidfies his second spot, right now he is top 3 in completion percentage, TD:INT ratio, and YPA.

3. Drew Brees (13) [+1]

Brees is throwing less than before, but the Saints are winning games, and he's still on pace for 5300+ yards. It'll be nice to see him break Marino's record. This time for reals.

4. Tony Romo (20) [+3]

Romo had his few good games, and now he's in the top 10, as an elite quarterback. But he still sucks and it's entirely his fault they lost to the Cardinals.

5t. Matt Schaub (23) [+5]

He had a great game against Tampa before getting hurt, but a lot of his increase in placement has to do with bad weeks from the guys in front of him. He's one of of the better passers in the league, and these results enforce that opinion.

5t. Eli Manning (23) [-2]

The Giants have begun their second half slump again. A tougher schedule to be sure, and Eli hasn't really played that much worse over the stretch, but he's thrown 5 of his 11 INT's in the past four games, and that's what dropping him down, along with the Eagles just plain having his number.

7t. Ben Roethlisberger (25) [-2]

Playing the Bengals twice and the Chiefs defense have balanced Ben's numbers out a bit, forcing him to play a shorter more patient sort of game. It's not really his style, but he's making it work well enough.

7t. Alex Smith (25) [-1]

Smith continues to play efficient football, and the 49ers continue to win. If a team has the defense to stop the 49ers, I'm not sure they match up as ideally, but Alex Smith is showing he can prey on mistakes and make the right throws. Jim Harbaugh is exactly what this kid needed.

9. Matt Stafford (36) [-1]

Despite throwing 10 INT's in 4 games, Stafford is still far ahead of the rest of the guys behind him, mostly due to his deep passing game, and multiple options to go to. He needs to limit the interceptions or the Lions are screwed come playoff time. If they even make it, that is.

10. Matt Moore (42) [+9]

I'm not sure how Matt Moore is playing so well now, but whatever he's doing it seems to be working. He is playing ridiculously good football right now, and the Dolphins are winning because of it.

11. Philip Rivers (48) [+1]

His interceptions are what's keeping him from a much better year, he hasn't looked like the same QB he was over the past 3 years, but he is doing well enough to be considered in the pro bowl race in the AFC.

12. Ryan Fitzpatrick (49) [-3]

Fitzy and the Bills are slipping. We all knew he was a guy who couldn't carry a team, but he's doing all he can to make it close. His completion percentage is excellent, despite his receivers dropping the catches that matter. He's not bad, but he's not good enough for the Bills this year.

13. Jay Cutler (53) [+2]

The difference between and Hanie is ridiculous. Cutler may make boneheaded throws every once and again, but he can squeeze those passes into tight windows. Hanie can't. Cutler found his elusiveness in the pocket, Hanie isn't elusive at all. So basically, Cutler's injury is the main reason the Bears won't be making the playoffs. Losing Forte now sucks even more, because that was their hope of winning any games for the rest of the year.

14. Cam Newton (54) [-1]

You can see how talented this guy is, but the interceptions are killing the Panthers right now. They can beat bad teams thoroughly, but they make mistakes against the good ones. He'll be a great one if he fixes those mistakes.

15. Matt Ryan (55) [0]

A net gain of zero, after three really strong weeks, the Falcons completely hosed up against the Texans. If Matt Ryan plays well, the Falcons generally win without question. Otherwise, they're losing because he isn't playing like he should be playing all the time.

16. Jason Campbell (56) [+2]

Not sure how he goes up after no PT, but whatever. Only playing in September and October is generally a stat booster.

17. Matt Hasslebeck (59) [-6]

Hasslebeck is falling back to the middle of the pack, but Chris Johnson is moving straight up. Looks like they're finding a balance, but is it the kind that they want? Hass's deep threats are doing nothing now.

18. Donovan McNabb (61) [+2]

Maybe the Bears taking McNabb is not such a bad idea. An efficient small ball type QB is definitely better than a not so good gunslinger. Hanie certainly isn't doing a good job, and the Bears have to salvage their season somehow.

19. Mike Vick (64) [-6]

An absolutely poor game against the Cardinals puts him here. An injury means he's had no games to redeem himself, while Vince Young looks alright in his place. The Eagles season is done however, but Vick isn't the catalyst for blame, he's just not as good as he was last year.

20. Kevin Kolb (66) [+4]

Kolb finds his way to the middle of the pack, after one strong game against Dallas. The Cardinals are rolling now, it doesn't seem to matter who they put in at QB with Beanie running, that defense working hard, and coaches scrambling to find ways to lose games against them. Kolb is finding a way to get the ball down to his deep threats, but I can't help but feel he's a little overrated right now.

21. Tim Tebow (68) [NR]

This is what being dead last in completion percentage, tops in TD:INT ratio and middle of the pack in YPA gets you. This is strictly what he's doing as a passer right now. When you take into account his whole skill set, he's playing like a top 15 QB. That's pretty scary for the rest of the league.

22t. Carson Palmer (70) [NR]

Carson's strength lies in his ability to throw deep bombs to the track stars of the Raiders offense. Without Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore, his completion percentage and most importantly his TD:INT ratio is suffering. He's working hard to cover for his 6 INT's at the start of his season.

22t. Andy Dalton (70) [-5]

Small drop for Dalton here, playing Pittsburgh twice and Baltimore once will do that to your stat totals. He's made a few more rookie mistakes, but there are some good positives to take from his tough stretch. However, it doesn't get any easier for the rookie, the Texans and Ravens are waiting, along with the surprising Cardinals. Here's where the OROTY candidate shows his mettle.

24. Chad Henne (72) [0]

Henne has been effectively replaced. Either by Matt Moore or a draft pick. I still think the kid has some potential, but Miami ain't the place to find it.

25. Mark Sanchez (75) [-4]

He's been playing dink and dunk, throwing more interceptions down this stretch, and just having a harder time finding his own guys. He's officially the worst starter in the AFC East, but considering his position on the list, that's not the worst thing to be.

26t. Tarvaris Jackson (77) [+1]

T-Jack is just managing the game, not doing anything too deadly for his team. When he's asked to be the leader, he's not going to do it, but he's showing that he could be a good transition QB for the Seahawks future. They seem to be making some positive steps forward.

26t. Josh Freeman (77) [-3]

I'll let Bucs fans explain this decline by Freeman, I certainly can't. The Bucs have lost 6 straight, and gone from contender to pretender rather quickly. The rest of the season is for pride, and I don't think the Bucs are playing with any.

28. Joe Flacco (78) [-2]

Just keep handing the ball off to Ray Rice, we all know you can't be arsed to run an effective offence. Thank the lord for the Ravens defense, or they'd be completely hooped.

29. Christian Ponder (79) [NR]

Third rookie on this list, you'll see some really great ball placement by this kid, but he seems to get color blindness at the worst possible time, his two completions to Denver could not have been placed any better than they were, and that's why the Vikings lost. There's a lot of positives in his game, including his scrambling ability, but he doesn't have it all together yet.

30. Vince Young (80) [NR]

He's doing a great job getting the ball down the field to guys like DeSean Jackson and Riley Cooper, but he just makes the worst decisions to take the Eagles out of games.

31t. Kyle Orton (84) [-2]

Good job getting injured in KC you dope.

31t. Colt McCoy (84) [-3]

It amazes me that the Browns even won 4 games this year. Colt has a problem with receiver drops, Greg Little is leading the league with 14 right now, but there's more to it than that. Pat Shurmur runs a hyper conservative stone age WCO that just doesn't work in today's game. All of these things combined make for a poor showing by the Colt. If people want to make excuses for Bradford, multiply those for McCoy.

33t. Rex Grossman (85) [-3]

Unleash the Sex Cannon. I have nothing non-trivial to say about him.

33t. Matt Cassel (85) [-11]

Cassel's pisspoor game aginst Denver in week 10 drags him down right to the bottom of the pack. If you watch him normally you can see that he's this kind of QB. Despite these things, he's still the best QB on the Chiefs roster.

35. John Beck (87) [-5]

He's a loser baby... so why don't you kill him.

36. Tyler Palko (88) [NR]

There's a reason why this guy couldn't find a home in the UFL or CFL. Yet the Chiefs still gave him a shot. Screw the NFL for putting the Chiefs on primetime and subjecting everyone to the horror that is Tyler Palko. His completion percentage is actually the only reason he's not looking at dead last, he's been more than adequate there.

37. Sam Bradford (95) [-3]

Hey, he's not dead last anymore. He still throws a lot, doesn't get a lot, and generally contributes negatively to his team's effort value. Good news though, he threw more TD's than INT's during this stretch of the season.

38. Blaine Gabbert (102) [-6]

This is another case of safe throws being the reason the QB isn't dead last. Gabbert and Bradford are very similar QB's. In the sense that they both suck tremendously that is, and we're hyped to high hell for bad reasons. That turnover ratio is the thing keeping him out of last place.

39t. John Skelton (108) [NR]

39t. Curtis Painter (108) [-6]

I'm not sure how to discern which guy is worse. They're tiered terrible for a reason, because they can't do anything right. I guess I'd say Skelton is slightly worse, (50% accuracy to 54% accuracy, not a big deal), but that doesn't seem to matter too much. Somehow when Skelton started the Cardinals went 3-1. When Painter started the Colts lost every game they played. It's weird seeing yet another Cardinals QB (this time not named Derek Anderson) take the worst QB spot again, you think times would have changed by now.

Just short of Qualifying:

Kerry Collins 98 Attempts

AJ Feeley 97 Attempts

Caleb Hanie 60 Attempts

Dan Orlovsky 58 Attempts

14. Cam Newton (54) [-1]

You can see how talented this guy is, but the interceptions are killing the Panthers right now. They can beat bad teams thoroughly, but they make mistakes against the good ones. He'll be a great one if he fixes those mistakes.

To be fair to Newton, since I may be the only one on here watching him every week, I've been keeping track- six of his 14 INTs were off of tipped balls- not tipped by the defense, but by his own receivers. (A few more were tipped by the defense, but he arguably should not have thrown those). 3 from Nanee, 1 from LaFell and 2 from Smitty. Every one of those balls are catchable- the two to Smitty were behind him, but Steve has got to make the catch, or at least not pop it up in the air to get a pick.

That's my problem with Nanee. Not only has he cost us 3 INTs and gotten some penalties in key situations, he doesn't *fight* for the ball afterwards. There was a ball Newton threw against the Bucs that went off of Smitty's hands and popped up in the air, and Smith played defense for him and made sure the defender didn't get the pick.

Regardless, Newton's been making smarter and smarter decisions with the football. That's week #2 in a row that he hasn't made a throw I felt should have been picked off based on anything he did, (meaning, the one to Smith should have been picked off if Smitty hadn't played defense, but Smith was the one who popped the ball into the air in the first place).

Also, I think he has 26 total TDs to 14 INTs, just half of them are on the ground, since we use him as a goal-line back a lot. Which I really don't like, it's too easy for him to get hurt down there.

Same as what you said with Tebow, if you take his entire skill-set into play... :)

Once this guy cleans up the fewer and fewer mistakes he makes each week, the rest of the NFC South is going to be in trouble.

Hass hasn't had a deep threat since Kenny Britt got hurt, lol..

Slightly Flawed, due to his 6:1 TD:INT ratio (0 INTs are counted as half an INT, just for the sake of number balancing and divide by zero errors), and 8.68 YPA (which would be good for second best in the league). His completion percentage is only 46% which is dead last for qualifying NFL QB's.

Here we go! Week 17 is in the books, and the final QB stats are up! We know who are elite QB's are, and we know who has falled from grace. The promise of Andy Dalton and Tim Tebow, among others have grown incredibly dull as the real season rolls around. Bolded are the QB's going to start in the playoffs, provided there are no further injuries. The Texans don't have their starter on the list (Now Jake Delhomme) since they've taken so many injuries at the position.

So does anyone else think Cam Newton isn't that impressive or is that debate over now? I could be wrong but he may have had the best rookie QB season ever.

He had a really impressive year, strictly speaking as a passer. Add to the fact that he's such a threat in the ground game and you have a truly impressive quarterback for the years to come. He's got a whole offseason to work on the decision making process, and if he can improve enough to fit it into those tight windows, then the sky is the limit.

RAW QUARTERBACK RANKINGS!

1. Aaron Rodgers (4)

What else can you say about this season? Completely dominant in 14 games this season, and it would be 15 if his receivers could catch in Arrowhead.

2t. Drew Brees (10) [+1]

Yardage record, broken. Completions and completion percentage, broken. A great year from Brees, and a 13-3 record to show for it. He could be stealing some MVP votes from Rodgers.

2t. Tom Brady (10)

It's Tom Muffalucking Brady, what did you expect? Wes Welker, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski are great receivers, and Brady brought out the best in them. He also broke Marino's yardage record.

4. Tony Romo (15)

An impressive way (at least stats wise) to end the season, but three losses in the last 4 games are thrown on his back for no good reason. I don't think I've ever seen a team let down their QB this much. Because when a guy plays this well, you usually win games.

5t. Matt Schaub (25)

The Texans will miss him in their playoff run.

5t. Matt Stafford (25) [+4]

He brought his best for the end of the season. This was Stafford's first healthy season, by the way. If people want to give Peyton the MVP for this year, retroactively give Stafford the MVP for last year. He's been just that good, and is soaring past his peers of the 09 Draft Class.

7. Ben Roethlisberger (31)

Another strong season by Ben, but the injury in the Browns game might hinder him in the playoffs. A high YPA and completion percentage from the 2 time SB winning QB are the positives that get him this high.

8. Eli Manning (33) [-3]

Eli has had a fall from grace compared to the start of the season, but this one was not dramatic, or abrupt. Most of all, the Giants came back from that slump, and won 3 of their last 4, securing a division title and another shot at the playoffs.

9. Alex Smith (35) [-2]

As long as he's not throwing picks and making completions, he's doing everything the 49ers need him to do. They're 13-3 to show for it, and Alex Smith is finally looking like the QB he is supposed to be under the watchful eye of Jim Harbaugh.

10. Philip Rivers (36) [+1]

Another strong December finish for the Chargers and Rivers, they were only a tiebreaker away from sneaking into the playoffs yet again. Thank you Detroit.

11. Matt Ryan (38) [+4]

As long as they aren't playing the Saints, Matt Ryan will have a good day. Only 12 interceptions to show for a improved focus on Pass Offense, as well as a great improvement on his YPA, just a shade below the elite guys.

12. Matt Moore (49) [-2]

He's shown that he deserves a shot at a starting job next year. Miami should still draft a QB in the first, but let him compete for the job with this guy who has shown he can be good enough to win you games.

13. Jason Campbell (55) [+3]

He'll probably get a shot somewhere else. The Raiders invested too much in Carson for Jason to start there. He'd be the best backup in the league if he stayed though.

14t. Jay Cutler (56) [-1]

The Bears blew their playoff chances when Cutler was gone. Enough said, he's a valuable piece to the Bears offense and they'd be straight screwed without him.

14t. Mike Vick (56) [+5]

Not quite the incredible season he had last year, but the Eagles are at .500, and they're doing it on the strength of Vicks deep ball and big play abilities. Something that was seriously hampered by DeSean's attitude and Maclin's mystery herpes.

14t. Matt Hasslbeck (56) [+3]

Well he very nearly put the Titans in the playoffs, and had one of his best seasons in a long time, but it just wasn't enough, tiebreakers keep them out. He's shown good promise as the bridge QB to the Jake Locker days.

17t. Carson Palmer (57) [+5]

He works really well with these weapons around him, and he's got the pieces to succeed next year, they just need to stay healthy. Can you imagine if Carson Palmer actually had an opportunity to give the ball to McFadden and Jacoby Ford?

17t. Cam Newton (57) [-3]

19. Donovan McNabb (61) [-1]

20. Dan Orlovsky (62) [NR]

These guys are really riding off some really good performances to boost their numbers, while their average play is quite a bit worse than this. Orlovsky has a great completion percentage while sacrificing his YPA. On the other hand, McNabb has avoiding INT's by avoiding the risky throw.

21. Ryan Fitzpatrick (65) [-9]

He just kept throwing more and more interceptions after losing Fred Jackson, his YPA got worse and worse, and eventually he fell from as high as 9th spot. It just shows that maybe the Bills had some good weapons before they all got injured, and that Fitzy doesn't make players good.

22. TJ Yates (68) [NR]

Yates played solid game manager football, but he showed a penchant for game winning drives, against both the Falcons and the Bengals. I don't know if that's a rining endorsement that he'll play well in the post season, but he is the second highest rookie QB on this list. He could be playing his way to a starting position elsewhere in the league.

23. Kevin Kolb (70) [-3]

Despite Kolb having the better season, eyes will look to John Skelton as the hero for the Cardinals. They ended up 2 wins short of the playoffs this year, but with that defense, and a QB who can stay in place for the entire season, they might stand a better chance in the future.

24. Andy Dalton (72) [-2]

I'm not sure what to say about Dalton, but he did not impress against the top defenses in his division. The Bengals lost all 4 games to the Ravens and Steelers this year, along with losses to the 49ers, Broncos, and Texans, All playoff teams. Meanwhile they pulled out their wins against the Browns twice, the Jags, the Bills, the Colts, the Seahawks, the Titans, the Rams and the Cardinals. An 0-7 record against playoff teams does not bode well for a long term playoff run. However Dalton has shown some promise in first season and looks to build on that success for the future.

25. Joe Flacco (75) [+3]

Flacco saved his best for the last stretch of the season, beating on the powerhouse Colts, and Chargers... wait this isn't last year. Basically he pounded some weak teams, got Ray Rice going and managed to do enough to not lose the game. Nobody is gonna call him an impressive QB, his completion percentage, and Yards per Attempt are subpar, but as long as he isn't ask to take over the game, they'll win.

26. Tarvaris Jackson (77)

Jackson really doesn't do much well, but he doesn't do anything terribly. As long as he can hand the ball off to Marshawn Lynch and still provide the simplest threat of a pass game, the Seahawks can be a difficult offense to face. Did enough to be a solid game manager.

27t. Kyle Orton (79) [+4]

Well if you watched the Chiefs games where Orton played, he did the same things he did in Denver. Drive down the field and then fail to score touchdowns. That's the kind of guy he is, and with a team like the Chiefs and their smothering D, that led to wins in two of their three games. He's at least earned himself a back-up job somewhere where the QB isn't trusted. Looking at you Mark Sanchez.

27t. Josh Freeman (79) [-1]

This was not the same guy that we saw last year. He wasn't comfortable, he kept trying to force plays, he had no running game or defense to help take some pressure off. However, he still played better than Mark Sanchez. Take solace in that Bucs fans, you still made the right choice. Even with 22 interceptions.

29. Chad Henne (80) [-5]

YOU HAVE BEEN REPLACED. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing his challenge for a starting spot... in Denver.

30t. Vince Young (87)

Nine interceptions in 114 throws is terrible. He could have been a lot worse on this list if not for a knack for getting the ball down the field. His do or die style of play helped the Eagles to two losses, that could have easily been 3.

30t. Matt Cassel (87) [+3]

Getting rewarded for warming the bench aww yeah. The Chiefs seem committed to him. I think Scott Pioli should be committed if that's the case.

32. Mark Sanchez (88) [-7]

Well he can't complete passes until the 4th quarter, he was pathetic at getting the ball to his big receivers, and it seemed liked he held no command over the huddle. He may have had 26 TD's, but he had more turnovers than he did in his rookie year. I may only be counting INT's, but this is still pretty bad. Regression hit him hard this year.

33. Tim Tebow (93) [-12]

And verily, did Tim Tebow get crucified in Buffalo, and his stats did not raise again until the playoffs, where the Broncos won the super bowl. And all was good in the world. But seriously, the picks have killed his standing quite a bit. His completion percentage was already pretty bad, but dropping to 12 or so after being at the top of TD:INT ratio, along with a small drop in YPA (now 36th out of 44 QB's) brings him crashing down to just outside of the "starting" tier.

34t. Rex Grossman (93) [-1]

34t. John Beck (93) [+1]

Hazzah! Once again there is no difference between the Redskins quarterbacks! You both suck equally!

36. John Skelton (98) [+3]

Well, once again he showed masterful work in the 4th Quarter. He's like a Tim Tebow who can't scramble and instead relies on Larry Fitzgerald to do the work for him.

37. Colt McCoy (99) [-6]

Let him play with a concussion and he does pretty bad. His YPA was below 6, he barely completed 57% of his passes, and the Steelers game dropped his TD:INT ratio to 23rd of 44, right in the middle of the pack. Just not that good a QB it seems, but he still played better than his backup did. Browns fans are seething.

38. Christian Ponder (103) [-9]

Hard to fault a rookie who got ragdolled by tough D's and lost his runningback during the last 4 games, but there you go. He showed a lot of potential in his rookie year, but nowhere near what his contemparies did. Sans Blaine Gabbert of course.

39. Tyler Palko (110) [-3]

WHY DID THEY LET YOU ONTO THE FIELD? Go Back to the Arena League or something. God you suck.

40. Sam Bradford (111) [-3]

Plays hurt, has no receivers, has no line. How many excuses will Bradford get? He hasn't done enough in this league to warrant any respect as a passer. Maybe the third year is the charm, but the new regime should think about moving on.

41. Blaine Gabbert (112) [-3]

WHY? WHY? Why was this guy a first rounder? He was a bigger stretch than Tyson Alualu, and that's saying something. I think the Jags should draft a kicker in the first round next year, that way everyone will forget about how bad a decision it was to draft this guy. Well, he is a rookie and you could give him the benefit of the doubt... but no. Just no.

42. Curtis Painter (115) [-3]

Not the worst QB! Because two guys playing at the end of the year just did so much worse.

43. Seneca Wallace (120) [NR]

What happened to the Seneca we saw last year, who easily looked like the most competent of the Browns QB's? 51.3% completion rate, good for 41st of 44 QB's, 5.30 YPA, worst in the league... just a joke altogether. The Browns are a factory of sadness! I'd rather be waterboarded than watch them play football.

44. Caleb Hanie (126) [NR]

... Join Benny Sapp in the Hall of Fail. RIGHT THE FUCK NOW, MISTER.

Adjusted Rankings!

Here's how these work, each QB has their best and worst game struck from the record, along with any games where they throw 5 or less passes. If a QB has played 4 or less games and they are on the Raw list, they're removed. I can't possibly adjust the stats with less than 4 games to work with. QB's with 5 to 7 games started are on this list tentatively, and I've marked them with red text. I'm considering removing them simply because they are still subject to wide fluctuations. The Pluses and Minuses in square brackets beside the Qb's name are their positions relative to the raw rankings, with the non qualifiers removed from the raw list. Basically it should tell you who are better than they look.
