Report: Harvin's ligament was completely torn

Dec 4 - 4:59 PM

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities reports Percy Harvin's Week 9 left ankle injury was a Grade 3 sprain, which means a complete ligament tear.

The injury usually comes with a 4-6 week timetable, and Harvin is now in his fifth week of recovery. The Vikings were initially optimistic that Harvin could return Nov. 25 versus the Bears, but the pain has lingered and he's struggled to get in and out of his breaks. Harvin will reportedly attempt to practice on Wednesday and could play with a pain-killing injection on Sunday versus the Bears.

Percy Harvin - WR - Vikings

Dec 5 - 1:45 PM

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities believes "there could be another issue at play" with the Vikings' handling of Percy Harvin's ankle injury.

Beat writer Tom Pelissero doesn't venture a guess as to what the issue might be, but does point to Harvin's bizarre offseason unhappiness. Pelissero also believes Harvin could be contemplating surgery after it was revealed Tuesday that his high-ankle sprain involved a complete ligament tear. Harvin is the kind of player you never say never with, but his 2012 outlook is getting less encouraging by the day.

Percy Harvin - WR - Vikings

Dec 5 - 12:52 PM

Coach Leslie Frazier admitted that he doesn't know if Percy Harvin's (ankle) season is over.

Harvin won't practice Wednesday. The sprain Harvin sustained back in Week 9 has proven to be far more serious than the Vikings initially believed. He was not able to practice Wednesday and is believed to have a complete ligament year. When Frazier was asked if Harvin's season is over, the coach said, "hard to say." Coaches are rarely that pessimistic on injuries even if they're forced to massage the truth a little bit. Harvin remains a hold in all formats until we get more concrete answers here, but the outlook appears bleak.

Percy Harvin - WR - Vikings

Dec 5 - 6:45 PM

Vikings placed WR Percy Harvin on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season.

As beat writer Tom Pelissero opined on Twitter, that escalated quickly. Coach Leslie Frazier admitted Wednesday that Harvin may not play again this season, but it stood to reason the Vikings would give their second best player another week or two to heal up. The fact that they haven't is a strong indication he needs surgery after tearing a ligament in his left ankle in Week 9. The news leaves the Vikings embarrassingly thin at receiver, and coupled with Christian Ponder's frequently dismal performances, places a massive load on the shoulders of Adrian Peterson as they fight to remain in the NFC Wild Card picture. This is the first time in Harvin's four-year career he's been placed on injured reserve. He had missed just three total games coming into 2012. Entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2013, Harvin's contract figures to be a point of emphasis for the Vikings in the offseason. He was a legit MVP candidate before going down. Harvin is still only 24 years old.

Without Harvin this team is all about done. We've seen what AP can do and they still can't win games with that kind of rushing...

They might be able to if Joe Webb starts!
