Bucs LT Penn 'drives management crazy'

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Bucs LT Donald Penn has reportedly failed to meet "most" of the weight clauses in the six-year, $41.7 million contract he signed in 2010.

Penn has made 92 straight starts and graded out positively in Pro Football Focus' 2012 pass- and run-blocking ratings, but has the "occasional lazy streak" and sometimes "drives management crazy." Penn turned 30 in April. While his 2013 roster spot is obviously safe, Penn's 2014 salary jumps to a non-guaranteed $6.4 million in 2014. He can't afford to let his on-field performance slip. Penn slammed PR for this. I'm not sure who to believe here. The article actually stated he didn't meet the goals early on in the contract. But the fact is, he was missed some of Training Camp last year because of the failed physical test all players had to take.

If Penn is right, then he is fine trashing PR over this. But I'm sure his weight is still some sort of issue, it always has been, but he's still been a solid LT for us. If he seriously drove management crazy, we would've actually drafted a OT at some point by now. Since becoming GM in 2009, Mark Dominik has only drafted one tackle, Xavier Fulton in the 5th round of the 2009 draft. He never played a meaningful snap and was cut quickly.

Pewter Report has updated their story noting that Penn met his weight clauses for the 2012 season, but that he missed some prior to 2012...this doesn't necessarily contradict their earlier report, but it does make the implication that Penn is on the hot seat because of his weight pretty sketchy. CBS Sports has noted the same thing, and also added that Donald Penn is on schedule to meet his weight clauses this offseason and the Bucs are satisfied with his weight right now. So...that's good news, and it lines up with Penn's own statement that he's in great shape. :thumbup2:

Schiano said today that he is very happy with the shape that Penn is in. PewterReport is looking really stupid right now.

When doesn't PR look stupid anymore :shifty:. That site will probably be closed in a few years or no longer have a insider board.
