AJ Jenkins could lose his roster spot

Recommended Posts

The Sacramento Bee doesn't consider 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins a lock for a roster spot.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco has hinted at the same thing. Sac Bee beat writer Matt Barrows considers Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams, and Quinton Patton the only locks in the 49ers' receiver corps. We'd agree on Patton, but wouldn't go that far on Williams, who is a special-teams type returning from a torn ACL. Cutting a first-rounder just 16 months after he was picked would be almost unprecedented, but Jenkins has shown zero on the field. GM Trent Baalke and coach Jim Harbaugh aren't afraid to make unconventional decisions ... like when they drafted Jenkins. Nevertheless, it's hard to see Jenkins losing his spot unless he's absolutely pathetic over the final three preseason games.

Not ready to give up on this kid yet. If he sucks complete ass this year then you can say we fucked up bad on the pick.

Late first round receivers can be so hit and miss. And it doesn't help that Baalke flew in the face of convention and picked a guy very much ahead of where his conventional draft grade was.

IMO, it's a good sign that teams can have the stones to give the draftniks the bird and take guys they believe in. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Seattle does it all the time and I don't think it's a coincidence that San Fransisco and Seattle have some of the better draft results in the last 3-4 years.

Championships rosters are built in day 2 and day 3. If you draft well deep into the rounds, you can completely whiff on your first round picks with no ill effect. Last years' whole draft was kind of bleah for the niners. But they clearly stick to their convictions and those appear to be pretty good on the whole.

it's not like the receiver crop was at all spectacular last year. TY Hilton, Chris Givens and Josh Gordon have been the best options from that class, but none of them came on like Julio Jones, or even a DeSean Jackson or Hakeem Nicks.

A change of scenery for two young guys. Don't think this trade amounts to anything though, neither guy is worth starting.
