Not-so-surprising update: The birth control did not solve the problem, but it did allow the doctor to finally pinpoint exactly what was wrong with her.

 

I've never heard of this before, but she has a disease called Gastroparesis. In essence, the signal responsible for telling her stomach to digest food gets lost in the sending and so she doesn't digest anything that's considered a "complex" food. So the food just sits in her stomach and... rots. Thus the nausea. Pretty damn gross.

 

There is no cure and its a pretty rare disease so they're not really sure on how to treat it either. They're gonna try some stuff that has worked for others with it, but no guarantees. They do, however, know for sure now what she can and cannot eat.

Alright. Another update.

 

I lied in that last post to you guys, though not intentionally.

 

I was relaying information from my sister who told me, and I quote, "the specialist said it was gastoparesis."

 

I, of course, like the naive person I am, assumed she meant Dr. Delegge, who is one of the only specialists on the disease in South Carolina, (I think that's how you spell his name), whom they had visited the week prior.

 

She did not. I went home a couple weeks ago. I was informed there that the specialist she was referring to was a Naturopathy specialist in nausea and stomach problems who "also does doctoring work on the side." I kid you not, this is a direct quote from the flyer my sister gave me. (She got said flyer from the church they go to, btw.)

 

Dr. Delegge, in fact, gave them the opposite conclusion: He did not believe it was gastroparesis. He ran the exact same test this quack later gave my sister and it came up negative. My mom and sister didn't like that because they had "researched" it and were sure it was in fact gastroparesis, so they went to get a "second opinion" from this fucking scam artist. She did the same test that an actual doctor did and it came up positive, (probably because of her shitty equipment or her shitty way of doing things), so of course she's right and the doctor is wrong.

 

What's more, I was told by my parents that I'm not "allowed" to tell my sister she's doing the wrong thing here because it "upsets" her. I told them the fact that she might be dying of a curable disease upsets me. I was called a smart-ass. Things escalated.

 

So we are back to square one. She is taking naturalopathic remedies for a disorder she doesn't have while whatever is actually going on is being given more and more time to do damage.

If his sister is an adult there's really nothing he can do but continue to be the voice of reason.

 

It baffles me that in this day and age that there are people out there naive enough to think that actual medical doctors aren't the best option for treatment.

 

It sure must be hard to treat people when the majority of them think they know more than you about something you've studied for years.

Oh it was very much a smart ass tone, Favre. I've had it with my parents. Between this shit and the bs I have to put up in every single damn conversation trying to convert me and guilt trip me, (doubly so now that they know I'm living with my girlfriend), I actually feel like I've gotten messed up enough mentally that I'm gonna see a psychiatrist in the next few weeks just to talk things out. They're batshit fucking insane. It wears on me. If it weren't for my sister, I would give serious consideration to cutting them out of my life entirely. My dad doesn't say as much, but he's going along with my mom on this one, and it's just so damn frustrating.

 

Their thinking is that the doctors have tried a ton of stuff over the past four to six months and are still unsure of what is going on. They don't want me to take away her hope of finally having found what was wrong. Even though, ya know, that's not it.

 

I don't know that I can do anything. My sister is 100% hook line and sinker into this stuff. So is my mom. She talks about it every time any sort of medicinal conversation comes up, which is a lot actually (she has three friends who are nurses). She thinks that doctors will actually prescribe medicines to people based not on what they need, persay, but on what makes them or maybe their corporate overlords happy. Completely into conspiracy shit about the FDA and everything else about the US pharmaceutical system. Which I agree is not the best, not by a long shot, but no one at a doctor's level is actively engaging in what would be malpractice. And she thinks basically all of them are.

They don't risk their medical licenses--no way in hell. Many doctors are still balls deep in debt from their schooling and dread malpractice suits. Most physicians I've ever dealt with try as hard as possible to find the most financially feasible form of treatment for their patients.
