Helu, Royster to compete for starting job

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that fourth-rounder Roy Helu and sixth-rounder Evan Royster will compete with Ryan Torain for the Redskins' starting tailback job.

Shanahan had especially high praise for Helu's speed and playmaking ability, comparing him to an early-career Clinton Portis. "He was that 4.45 guy coming out, very physical, and once he had that open lane, he could go the distance ... I look at Helu as having that type of ability, that type of speed." Torain will enter camp atop the depth chart as the incumbent, but we like Helu's chances of playing a significant role right off the bat. Royster, on the other hand, may not even make the Week 1 roster. May 1, 2:42 PM

Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that third-round WR Leonard Hankerson will compete for a starting job this summer.

Hankerson had the fourth-fastest forty time among receivers at the Combine, and Shanahan believes he had the largest hands. "I think he brings a lot to the table," said Shanny. With Santana Moss reaching free agency, the Skins have little more than Anthony Armstrong and injury-plagued bust Malcolm Kelly as holdovers. Related: Anthony ArmstrongSource: CSN Washington

The Redskins confirmed that second-rounder Jarvis Jenkins will be a two-gap end in Jim Haslett's 3-4 scheme.

Coach Mike Shanahan calls Jenkins the "prototype 3-4 defensive end," and the former Clemson star should be plugged right into the starting lineup opposite a rotation of Adam Carriker and Vonnie Holliday. The Redskins picked up as many six or seven rookie starters in the draft. Source: Washington Post

The Redskins have close to nothing on their roster in terms of talent, so it's not surprising that so many rookies will see immediate playing time.

Helu will beat out the injury prone Ryan Torain, and barring injury will be a 1,000+ rusher this season.
