oochymp 2,393 Posted March 28, 2014 Check out the terrible paper that earned a player an A- at North Carolina | The Dagger - Yahoo Sports The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of our nation's finest universities, ranking 30th in the latest U.S. News and World Report list of top schools and eighth on Forbes' list of top public colleges. And the bit of drivel above apparently earned an A-minus, according to ESPN. Why? Simple. That paper was written by an athlete for a class specifically designed to keep them moving through the university. "Athletes couldn't write a paper," Mary Willingham, a specialist in the school's learning-support system-turned-whistleblower, told ESPN. "They couldn't write a paragraph. They couldn't write a sentence yet." She said that some of the students were reading at a second- or third-grade level, which is considered illiterate for a college-age student. As Willingham notes, in the "AFAM" classes, players were notching As and Bs, but in actual classes such as Biology and Economics were receiving Ds and Fs. I think we've all at least speculated that "student"-athletes are given breaks, but this shit coming out about UNC is just ridiculous

southgadawg 52 Posted March 28, 2014 I thought after the Jan Kemp ordeal back at UGA in the 80's that most of this type of stuff was past us. I will admit that I wasn't overly a fan of hers at the time, but she stood up for the right thing in a difficult time. I knew more than one student athlete when I was at college who weren't as intelligent as most 5th graders (one or two seriously were way worse than that). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Kemp
SteVo+ 3,702 Posted March 28, 2014 As a teacher, I could go on for hours about this particular subject, but here's the truth, and most people know it already: we've been slashing our standards in high school for years, and now it's trickling over to college as well. I wonder how that affects America's intellectual standing in the world.

I wonder how that affects America's intellectual standing in the world. Rich American's who attend rich American private schools are still among the tops in education. It's the other 90% that doesn't do so well, but yeah, standards are not what they used to be.
SteVo+ 3,702 Posted March 28, 2014 Rich American's who attend rich American private schools are still among the tops in education. It's the other 90% that doesn't do so well, but yeah, standards are not what they used to be. In America, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class goes up and down but overall through a decline. Ultimately, it's always been that way, both in economics and education. The smart get smarter, the dumb get dumber, and the kids in the middle get progressively worse. But lately, but standards being continuously watered down, even the smart students aren't being tested to the rigor they should be, and that is a very dangerous development, in my opinion.
