2011, Best Player in the NFL

Recommended Posts

This project is a massive undertaking, and a good way to kill time in the off season. The structure of this tournament is simple, we take the best 16 players in each division, and pair them up in a single elimination tournament until only one remains. However, before we even get to that stage, we must run a qualifying round.

That is where you come in. If you have the time, open up topics in each division forum that doesn't already have them, and put up topics titled '2011 Best Player in the NFL: Qualifying Round' with the division in the topic description. From there, ask the users to give you their top 6 players for each team in the division.

Example:

Houston Texans

+6 Andre Johnson

+5 Mario Williams

+4 Matt Schaub

+3 DeMeco Ryans

+2 Eric Winston

+1 Owen Daniels

Let those run for three days and I'll tally the totals up. From there we need to run a Seeding/ Elimination round to reduce the divisional group of 24 into 16. This will ensure that only the best players make it out of the division, even if some teams aren't equally represented. For now, just get the qualifying round topics up.

And as a bonus, for those of you who weren't around last year, I have some of the results, at least for the Sweet Sixteen.

Theoretical Percent of votes the player would get against the champion Drew Brees last year.

Drew Brees 50.00%

Peyton Manning 46.67%

Patrick Willis 44.44%

Darrelle Revis 42.86%

DeMarcus Ware 42.42%

Nnamdi Asomugha 35.56%

Andre Johnson 34.29%

Steven Jackson 29.09%

Philip Rivers 27.27%

Troy Polamalu 27.27%

Joe Thomas 23.33%

Aaron Rodgers 21.82%

Calvin Johnson 16.97%

*Jake Long 16.67%

Trent Cole 16.16%

*Tony Gonzalez 15.15%

*Adjusted for Blowouts.

So yeah, you know what to do.

Should I do it so it's one thread per team?

Just do them all at once, that way we have less clutter to filter through.

Alright, most of these topics should be approaching the three day limit. The next step is to make the seeding/Elimination topics. In case of ties at the bottom, which I've had in tallying for both the AFC West and NFC East, include those tied players in the next round.

The Format for these topics is simple, list all of the qualifying players like this:

player a - 0

player b - 0

player c - 0

etc etc...

and then include your vote at the bottom of the bottom of the post, in this sort of fashion:

+5 Player A

+4 Player B

...

-4 Player X

-5 Player Y

The players with the most points in this round get the higher seeds, and the top 16 from each division move on. Those with negative numbers are the eliminated. If there is a tiebreaker needed, it will be sorted based on points from the first qualifying round. I hope this is clear and easy to understand.

Alright, most of these seeding elimination topics are closing tonight so make sure to get your votes in if you haven't already.

We're going to end up with a 128 player bracket when this round is done, but I'd like some input about something. Originally I was going to re-seed when we got the final 32 (since the first two rounds will be done in division), and I will go ahead and do that, but the question is how should I reseed?

A. Random Draw, self explanatory, the brakcet will be reseeded randomly.

B. Re-seeding based on 'strength'. Basically the high seeds will be reseeded so they are up against low seeds hanging around from other divisions. I.E. the 1 seed in the AFC South might end up against the 14th seed in the NFC South kind of thing.

C. Positional Brackets. Something that Stevo suggested, working the bracket in a way so we can get things like Best Left Tackle against Best Defensive End, Best Corner against Wide Receiver and so on.

D. Other: Throw out your own thoughts, I'd like to see what other options there are.

I say option C of course. :D

B.

C seems like it would fuck things up. Who is to say the 3rd QB isn't better than the best C? With option C, that isn't a possibility. The #1 best player may still be the same, but the guys who come afterward would not be accurate as far as the nature of this competition, IMO.

Alright, we've got two tiebreakers to go through, so I'll explain the tiebreaker rules here first.

The rules are sudden death, first player to five votes wins or whoever has the most votes after 24 hours wins. There are no polls for this, so you have to actively post to say who you vote for. I will only step in if we have still not resolved the tie within 24 hours. Simple, right?

Any other votes on how to deal with the round of 32?

Option C sounds good.

F4E made a good point about C; it dilutes the matchups towards the end, but the #1 player should be the same and I just thought the positional matchups would be cool. I'm fine with doing it either way.

Ok, we made it the final 32, here is the breakdown (we did a great job with seeding)

8 Number 1 seeds

8 Number 2 seeds

8 Number 3 seeds

3 Number 4 seeds

4 Number 5 seeds

1 Number 13 seed

By Team (those not mentioned have a single representative)

Teams with 2 Representatives

Jets

Steelers

Texans

Cowboys

Saints

49ers

Teams with No rep

Dolphins

Bengals

Titans

Redskins

Buccaneers

Seahawks

By Position

QB - 5

HB - 3

WR - 4

TE - 1

OT - 1

OG - 1

C - 1

DE - 5

DT - 2

OLB - 2

MLB - 3

CB - 3

S - 1

So 16 offense, and 16 defense, shame there is still so much slant towards skill positions though. The bracket will be up in the next post, I'm going to try to do a combination of options B and C, so we'll see how this turns out.

It took some doing, but I found a permutation that works. It's very nice since we have 16 offense and 16 defense. There are two players from each division on each half of the bracket, there are two offensive and defensive players in each set of 4, and the positions are somewhat evenly spread out. This is pretty much I could do, so i hope you don't mind how it turned out. All numerical seeding has disappeared at this point.

Bracket Alpha(Cool Name Bro)

QB Tom Brady

vs.

MLB Jon Beason

HB Jamaal Charles

vs.

DE Trent Cole

WR Larry Fitzgerald

vs.

DE Julius Peppers

QB Drew Brees

vs.

DE Mario Williams

DE Justin Tuck

vs.

QB. Philip Rivers

S Troy Polamalu

vs.

MLB James Laurinaitis

OT Joe Thomas

vs.

HB Maurice Jones-Drew

Bracket Omega (Yes these will be in separate topics for this round, not enough poll space otherwise.)

vs.

CB Champ Bailey

DT Kyle Williams

vs.

WR Calvin Johnson

QB Aaron Rodgers

vs.

OLB James Harrison

WR Roddy White

vs.

MLB Patrick Willis

OLB DeMarcus Ware

vs.

C Nick Mangold

QB Peyton Manning

vs.

DT Haloti Ngata

CB Nnamdi Asomugha

vs.

TE Jason Witten
