AllYouNeedIsLovie 377 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted by Michael David Smith on July 26, 2011, 5:46 PM EDT Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson was expected to be a sought-after free agent, but he won’t be going anywhere. A league source tells PFT that the Panthers and Johnson have agreed on a deal that will keep Johnson in Carolina. The Panthers’ front office and Johnson’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have worked out a six-year, $76 million deal with $32 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus. The 25-year-old Johnson started all 16 games for the Panthers last season and recorded 11.5 sacks. Source: ProFootballTalk

KiLaSix9+ 398 Posted July 27, 2011 In today's NFL, every one year wonder gets overpaid. Especially a specialist. As much as I lol at the Panthers for overpaying him, it sucks hes still in the division.
RazorStar 4,025 Posted July 27, 2011 So he's getting it all up front pretty much, I imagine most of the rest will be escalators and he'll be begging for a new contract in a coupla years.
Thanatos 2,847 Posted July 28, 2011 ... I don't really like this move all that much. Did they really have to pay him that much in order to keep him? Sheesh.
DonovanMcnabb for H.O.F 2,241 Posted July 28, 2011 (edited) the 30 mill bonus barely counts against the cap... And the amount of money they gave him makes somewhat of sense. Most of it is up front probably because the new CBA forces teams to use more of their salary cap space and the Panthers don't have a very big payroll right now. A deal like this which has so much money up front makes it easier for the Panthers to cut him or get rid of him in year 5 or 6 if he's not living up to the contract they gave him... But there is the possibility that he demands more money in year 5 or 6 if he continues to produce at a high level.
