Wow, I imagined FSU would be ranked around #10. They are lined up to make a run at the BCS title if of course they can win some HUGE games.

16 is relatively low smh.

New QB, New coach, key players sitting out a 5 game suspension will do that.

If FSU keeps recruiting and building up like they are, watch out.

Hopefully this time next year Tennessee is ranked in the top 25. We got a young, but pretty talented team. Can't wait!

FSU is going to make some noise this year, but I think 2012 will be the year they make a serious run at the title.

I agree.

Coach Stoops did a good job bringing some of that juice back in the 'Nole defense. 2012 should feature a near championship level defense if they improve more.

I am looking forward to their QB's development on offense. He can be a real dual threat.

Manuel and Thompson have the potential of making it an explosive offense. That'll be a great option play. Add Reed to the mix and look out.

Heh....preseason rankings. Usually by the end of the season it's not even close this.

Good to see Mizzou ranked. I wasn't sure if we would be. I think our defense is gonna improve even though we lost Aldon Smith. Whether or not we earn this ranking pretty much depends on whether James Franklin can step up as starting qb.

But the start position weighs heavy on the finish. If you aren't ranked in this poll, you're basically already eliminated from championship contention. That can also be said of anyone ranked 15 or lower on it.

Haha not always but they have gotten a lot of love in the past preseason polls.

I agree that pre-season rankings have a pretty big weight on the final polls; especially when there are many undefeated teams.

That said, Auburn was ranked 23 and 22 in the coaches and AP polls respectively.

It definitely is true though, that if there were three undefeated teams (not talking about Boise or TCU), then the one with the higher pre-season ranking is probably going.

I don't think preseason poll position has as much effect on the final polls as it used to. Remember when USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn all finished undefeated and the ensuing controversy that followed Auburn being shunned? USC was ranked 1st in the preseason polls that year; Auburn was ranked 23rd. In that day, being ranked #1 meant all you had to do was not lose, and you were in the NCG.

These days it's different. Remember who the preseason #1 team was two years ago? Georgia. There was a bunch of hype, Georgia's first ever preseason #1 ranking, blah blah blah. Then, after the first week of the season, whoever the #2 team was dominates a weak opponent, and Georgia gets bumped down from the top spot.

The point is that voters, over time, have shown more and more that they are willing to put together their top 25 from scratch every week, as opposed to just basing it off their previous week's ranking. And that's the way it should be.

Auburn was left out because it started too low on the preseason poll. USC was #1 and Oklahoma #2. They held those spots. The most Auburn managed in its climb was a tie for #2 that lasted just one week. It's a fact that the higher you start puts you in a position where you need fewer teams to lose, unless you're a mid-major. Last year's Auburn team made the biggest climb, but big names ahead of them lost, and the middies like TCU, Boise State, Utah were no obstacles at all.

2010 BCS Championship Game

  •
  • Oregon-preseason #11

  •
  • Auburn-preseason #23

(Alabama preseason #1)

2009 BCS championship game

  •
  • Texas-preseason #2

  • Alabama-preseason #6

(Florida preseason #1)

2008 BCS Championship game

  • Florida-preseason #5

  • Oklahoma-preseason #4

(Georgia preseason #1)

2007 BCS championship game

  •
  • LSU-preseason #2

  •
  • Ohio State-preseason #10

(USC preseason #1)

2006 BCS championship game

  •
  • Ohio State-preseason #1

  •
  • Florida-preseason #8

Any program not appearing in the preseason poll has little to no shot at the championship. That's why it's so important. That's also why there shouldn't be one. The first poll shouldn't be released until at least 4 games have been played.

All those teams you listed though did really really good. That's why teams that weren't ranked didn't make the championship game....

That 2007 LSU team finished with 2 losses. The only 2 loss BCS champion. Kansas was a 1-loss program that didn't appear in the preseason top-25, and finished lower than six 2-loss teams in the final regular season poll.

We also have to remember that the difference between Wisconsin or Michigan State playing in the Rose Bowl is that the Badgers were ranked in the preseason poll, and the Spartans were not. The Big Ten broke a three-way tie by selecting the highest ranked team in the final regular season poll to rep the conference in the Rose Bowl. Michigan State, having an identical record, finished behind Wisconsin and Ohio State, the two teams that appeared in the original poll.
