Browns use second-round pick on WR Gordon

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Browns selected former Baylor WR Josh Gordon with a second-round pick in the 2012 supplemental draft.

Only Buffalo picked ahead of Cleveland each round, so it's possible that another team also submitted a second-round bid on Gordon. CBSSports' Jason LaCanfora notes the Browns have spent a lot of time around the Baylor program of late, and the coaching staffs in Waco as well as Utah gave Gordon a strong vote of confidence. While Gordon boasts an ideal NFL body (6'3/224) and catch radius for a wide receiver, he may be more athlete than football player. The Browns desperately needed a young playmaker to join Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden, and Greg Little as the offensive core, but they paid an exorbitant price in forfeiting their 2013 second-round pick for a player with just one year of college film as a true 19-year-old sophomore. Over the past decade, OT Jared Gaither (2007 fifth round) and LB Ahmad Brooks (2006 third round) are the only supplemental draft picks to make an impact at the NFL level. Jul 12 - 1:25 PM

That's interesting, but it's a big investment on a kid who is going to be raw coming in. Maybe they think he'll be better than any other second round receiver coming out next year and this year would be akin to a redshirt season in order to pick up the offense and such.

When we asked our resident NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper, Jr. about Gordon the other day, he said a second-round price tag wasn't out of the question, and explained why: "I think there's a very good possibility he would have rated higher on most boards than A.J. Jenkins, Brian Quick or Stephen Hill."

Lots are questioning this decision...but if you're the Cleveland Browns, how much can this REALLY hurt you?

Considering it's a 2nd round pick... a lot.

This kid was the #1 WR at Baylor over Kendall Wright. I think it's a nice pickup. He was impressive at his workout. He's big and fast, a natural runner and can catch the ball. We will see but for now I'm all like

They take a player that played well while he was at Baylor and had an issue with marijuana? He seems to say it's behind him and if it is, this could prove to be a steal.

Browns agreed to terms with second-round supplemental pick WR Josh Gordon on a four-year, $5.3 million contract.

Although the team's brass expects Gordon to contribute as a rookie, the challenge will be picking up Pat Shurmur's West Coast offense after playing in Baylor's spread formation, then spending last year as a redshirt practice-only player at Utah. Expected to battle Greg Little for No. 1 receiver duties down the line, Gordon falls in the 20-25 range in Dynasty rookie drafts next month.

Fuck it, who cares. If this dude can catch a few footballs he's an upgrade.
