Bangy 19 Posted August 11, 2012 Per ESPN The Carolina Panthers have signed running back Jonathan Stewart to a five-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday. The deal is worth $36.5 million and could reach a maximum of $42.5 million, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. It includes $22.5 million guaranteed, the source said. "We are thrilled to be able to extend Jonathan for five additional years," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. "He is a perfect fit for our organization. He is a playmaker who can make the difference in games and we have seen the impact he and DeAngelo Williams have had on our team." The Panthers added fullback/tailback Mike Tolbert in free agency during the offseason, and the plan is to use him in tandem with Stewart and Williams. Last July, Williams agreed to a five-year, $43 million deal that includes $21 million in guaranteed money. A first-round pick in 2008, Stewart is the second leading rusher in franchise history with 3,500 yards. He also holds the club record for single-game rushing yards with 206 against the New York Giants on Dec. 27, 2009.

RazorStar 4,025 Posted August 11, 2012 Williams has a lot less wear on his body than other 29 year old backs, over the same period of time, 16 backs have had more carries than him. if 2800 touches is the supposed death mark of a good runner, then Angel still has a way to go. The split system should give him an extra 4 years past 30 where he'd still be a strong contributor.

RANGA+ 1,210 Posted August 15, 2012 The Panthers continue to prove that a RB tandem is still a viable option in the NFL. Plus with Cam Newton still in development, it makes sense to lock up two of your biggest producers on offense.
56AceInDaPlace 110 Posted August 15, 2012 Panthers will be the new Vick led Falcons run team. Newtons scrambling ability gives them more room to run. Plus both backs will be able to play out their contracts. Good move.
