This week the Angels have reportedly been shopping Ervin Santana and Dan Haren as they face big-money option decisions on both pitchers and according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com they’ve found a taker for Santana in the Royals.

No word yet on the return coming back to the Angels, but don’t expect it to be much. Santana’s option is for $13 million and he was pretty terrible for much of this year, finishing with a 5.16 ERA in 30 starts. And simply by trading Santana instead of declining his option the Angels saved a $1 million buyout.

Within his overall inconsistency Santana has often shown the ability to be a front-line starter, but he’s always struggled to limit homers and at this point he’s a 30-year-old with a 4.33 career ERA. For a one-year pickup he’s a decent gamble for the pitching-starved Royals, even if the price is a bit much.

UPDATE: Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Angels will receive left-hander Brandon Sisk, a 27-year-old Triple-A reliever. In other words, a non-prospect.

UPDATE II: According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, the Angels exercised Santana’s $13 million option before the trade and will cover $1 million of it. So the Royals will pay him $12 million.

11 of the last 17 WS winning managers have had some kind of experience as a catcher. I think I heard that stat correctly on ESPN Radio.

Good news for Marlins fans.

MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports that the Cubs have "been in contact" with free agent Ryan Dempster.

The Cubs traded Dempster away this summer but may want him back for the 2013 campaign if the price is right. The veteran right-hander posted a 3.38 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 153/52 K/BB ratio in 173 innings (28 starts) this season between the Cubbies and Rangers. He will probably be looking for a two- or three-year contract.

BOSTON -- David Ortiz may get his wish to retire with the Boston Red Sox.

The veteran designated hitter -- and face of the storied franchise -- agreed Friday night on a two-year deal worth at least $26 million, a source said. Incentives could bring the deal to as much as $30 million.

More From ESPN.com

The numbers still add up for Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, and let's hope it stays that way, writes ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes. Story

Talks between Ortiz and the Red Sox began late in the season and concluded with Friday night's accord. The veteran slugger has made no secret of his desire to finish his career in Boston.

In case the sides did not come to an agreement, the Red Sox had made Ortiz a $13.3 million qualifying offer prior to Friday's 5 p.m. ET deadline so that they would be eligible for draft-pick compensation if he ended up signing with another team. Boston didn't extend qualifying offers to outfielders Scott Podsednik and Cody Ross, right-handers Aaron Cook, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Vicente Padilla, and first baseman James Loney.

Ortiz would have been able to negotiate with other teams, beginning at midnight, if he hadn't come to terms with the Red Sox. But that won't be necessary now.

Ortiz, an eight-time All-Star who turns 37 on Nov. 18, was on pace for a productive 2012 before he suffered a right Achilles strain July 16. He was limited to only one more game the rest of the season and finished with a .318 average, 23 home runs and 60 RBIs in 90 games.

Since his arrival in Boston prior to the 2003 season, Ortiz has spent the last 10 seasons becoming one of the best DHs in the game. He has a .290 career average with the Red Sox, including 343 homers and 1,088 RBIs.

He was a critical component of the team's two World Series championships in 2004 and '07.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Orioles are interested in free agent outfielders Josh Hamilton and Cody Ross.

Nate McLouth is a free agent this offseason, which leaves Nolan Reimold, Xavier Avery and L.J. Hoes as the top internal options to play left field, so the O's are weighing their options. Hamilton is considered the top position player available in free agency, but the Orioles are unlikely to be in the mix if the bidding makes it anywhere close to the seven-year, $175 million figure reported by John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus over the weekend. Given his age and concerns over injury and his past off-field issues, he'll almost certainly have to settle for less, but it only takes one team to throw expectations for a loop. Ross would be a cheaper alternative, as he's reportedly looking for a three-year, $25 million pact, but he figures to be a very popular target on the open market.

Mark McGwire has accepted the position of hitting coach for the LA Dodgers.

Makes me sad. The guy was all but blacklisted from the sport... He gets a shot from his friend Tony LaRussa, sees amazing results... and all of a sudden everyone wants to be his friend.

Good luck to Big Mac. He'll always have a home in St. Louis.

Bob Nightengale of the USA Today cites two "high ranking club officials" (though he doesn't specify which club) as saying the Rangers are trying to land Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons, in order to then flip Simmons to the Arizona Diamondbacks in order to acquire rightfielder Justin Upton.

Oh my. lolBraves if they do this.

With the Cleveland Indians expected to listen to offers for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera this offseason, Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals have a "real" interest in acquiring the All-Star infielder.

Not sure what we would have to give up to get him... I am okay with Furcal, TBH... but if he can't stay healthy, eh. All we need is a solid stop gap to get us into the SS / 2B duo of Kozma or Jackson and then Kolton Wong.
