Sarge+ 3,436 Posted May 25, 2014 Memorial Day would not become an official holiday for about 10 more years after Walt Whitman released the first edition of Leaves of Grass. However, this literary giant again proved that he was a ahead of his time by honoring our fallen service men and women in a similar way that would eventually become the holiday we know as Memorial Day. In fact, the Civil War had not even happened yet when Whitman wrote this. Happy Memorial Day to everyone who has served our great nation past and present. This thrilling excerpt of "Song of Myself" goes out to everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good of the United States of America. This man really did touch on so many different aspects of life in his poetry--some that would not even become relevant on a greater scale until long after he wrote about them: "With music strong I come, with my cornets and my drums,I play not marches for accepted victors only, I play marchesfor conquer'd and slain persons. Have you heard that it was good to gain the day?I also say it is good to fall, battles are lost in the same spirit inwhich they are won. I beat and pound for the dead,I blow through my embouchures my loudest and gayest forthem. Vivas to those who have fail'd!And to those whose war-vessels sank in the sea!And to those themselves who sank in the sea!And to all generals that lost engagements, and all overcomeheroes! And the numberless unknown heroes equal to the greatestheroes known!" Walt Whitman, Song of Myself (1855) As we have our cookouts, swimming, picnics, and baseball tomorrow, never forget the men and women who made this day possible. Happy summer, too, TGP!
BwareDWare94 723 Posted May 26, 2014 Raise your glasses to our military, but don't forget that Memorial Day is also used as a day to pay respect to any of your deceased family members/friends. If you have the day off, pay your respects to the military as well as any of your deceased loved ones.

ATL_Predator+ 1,196 Posted May 26, 2014 I am not a Marine. But I have a sister(Marines) who lost her husband (Marines) a few years ago in Afghanistan. Honor the fallen today, and never forget. Today isn't about current military. It's about those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Don't get it twisted.
