Life Improvement Thread

Recommended Posts

What are some things you could do to improve your life right now? Make a short list. We can discuss.

Here are mine:

1. Less Facebook. Remove the app from my phone, lessen the updates that come to me. It's not that there's anything inherently wrong with Facebook--I have too many friends in too many different places (people move--that's life), and I would likely lose all contact with many of them. I won't delete my account, but I think I'm going to try to use it a lot, lot less.

2. More reading. I'm happiest, by far, when I'm reading during most of my free time. I need to get back to that.

3. Drink less frequently. I don't get hammered but there are too many nights where I go out and spend money I simply don't need to.

4. Better money habits. I have quite a few added bills in the near future in order to make sure I can continue to do the things I love.

What do the rest of you have?

Been all about life improvement the last year. Couple years ago I was trying to kick drinking and over facebooking, glad that stuff is in the past. These last few months have been about spiritual growth, trying to gain a more others-driven outgoing type of personality, and have daily habits of being proactive in getting my resume or job apps squared away so I can become that hungry new employee of a worthwhile career.

Eat healthier. I've been working out regularly since June and have gotten noticeably stronger, but I can't lose any weight because I have 0 willpower when it comes to food.

I'm starting my own landscaping business. My brother in law has been doing it for several years with another crew and we decided to go into business together.

I don't know if it's possible to sound any more like you are from the west coast. Eat some granola, hippie. :D

My goals for the near future are:

- To get into a real career with promotion possibilities down the road. I've been out of college 9 months now, so it's time for me to get my life in gear.

- Once I do, I'm going to set a very strict monthly budget so that I can pay off my student loans within 5 years. I owe quite a bit of money, but the sooner I can pay it off and be debt free, the better.

- Eat healthier and spend less money on food. The two actually go hand in hand, contrary to what most people think.

- Continue improving my personality. Become more patient with people. Be more realistic about what I have to offer the world and what the world has to offer me. Continue to have an open mind about things. Let go of some of these daily stresses that add up over time and take their toll on me.

- Be realistic about what to look for in a relationship, and what I can be for the other person.

I get around this by hitting the gym 7 days a week.

That's a lot easier to do in college than when you're working full time though

1. Trying to not be a dick. It's hard, since being a dick is basically my natural state, but I'm trying to build empathy for my fellow man. Once I do that I can maybe not get so hung up about shit in my life.

2. Exercise routinely. I'm trying to get an hour of walking in a day, I've found a good little circuit to walk that takes about that much time. I don't do anything in the way of lifting exercises, but a few pushups and pullups usually suffice.

3. Cutting pop and sugary sweets from my diet. I'll get back to you on this one, it's hard.

4. Discover what I want to do with my life. There has to be a career for me that I won't hate, but I have no idea where to start. What I thought would interest me at 17 has died in a heap by 22. And if I have to go to university for it, will it be worth the time, money and opportunity cost? For mostly everything, the answer is no. Then again, for most things, you need that stupid slip of paper.

I'll be completely honest, the breakup I had back in May hit me hard and made me really focus on my life and work on improving myself. I committed the summer to working out hard and it got me into the absolute best shape of my life. I became a little more outgoing. I moved out of my parent's house. It was really some dedicated time strictly toward me. Without that I don't think I would be as happy or in as good of a spot as I am in now.

I'm not sure when it clicked, maybe sometime in October, but I just realized I was in a very comfortable and happy spot. A few weeks later I met my current girlfriend and I don't think that's coincidence. If I didn't go through transforming myself in summer I wouldn't have been in the correct mindset to be with her. Now this isn't a shot at her but if we were to break up today I would be fine because I've focused so much on myself that I'm happy where I'm at right now, single or in a relationship.

As for the money thing BWare you should start making a log. I write down EVERYTHING I spend money on. Food, gas, bills....anything. Then every few days you can look back and see exactly where your money is going.

Reading is something I really want to get into doing again. Just got Catch 22 from my girlfriend so I'm working on that right now.

1. Apply for summer internships --- I may already have one lined up through family but I want the interview experience etc, plus it would be great to land one in my field of study.

2. Get back to running --- I have a hard time running in the winter (my treadmill broke)

3. Get involved on campus --- looking at playing some intramural soccer

4. Chill with the road rage....

This is a good one for those of you still in college or soon to be (if there are any in that group). Outside of playing football for my freshmen and sophomore year, I didn't do anything.

After I quit football I joined all these organizations, participating in competitions, forums and attended almost all the events held by my school. Made some amazing friends, met a boatload of girls who were into things I was into, made connections with professors and people in administration, and made my last two and a half years of college the best time of my life.

I can't recommend getting more involved on campus more. :yep:

Question about working out. Now that I'm in a gym thinking of doing a four day split workout. Thinking of something like this:

Monday: Chest/Triceps

Tuesday: Rest/Cardio

Wednesday: Back/Biceps

Thursday: Shoulders/Abs/Calves

Friday: Quads/Hams

Saturday: Rest/Cardio

Sunday: Rest/Cardio

I'm doing the one rest day on Tuesday because I have a radio show in the morning so it'd be easier to just play basketball that day. Is it that big of a deal of going with three workout days in a row instead of putting the split right in the middle?

Edit: And do I really need 3/7 days being for rest cardio. What if I were to just do two? What would the difference be?

No idea what your goals are. But it does seem really cardio heavy. If muscle gain is within your goals, throttling each major muscle group every 72 hours or about is the way to go. Also, you can always cardio after weights. Doing cardio doesn't mean you have to abandon your resistance training for the day altogether like that. That's a lot of wasted days otherwise imo. Lastly I would keep leg stuff all together. Doing your deadlifts, then leg press is already engaging your calves a little bit. Plus you're already on the leg press machine, why not just bang out the 3-4 sets of calf press immediately after you've leg pressed. I feel the same way about shoulders. They are always engaged when you are doing chest. I prefer to hit the "pushing" lifts (chest shoulders tricepts) together in a 90 minute lift, and then all the "pulling" exercises (back biceps & forearms) on the next session. They tend to work together that way.

But I've never cared about whether its Monday, Friday, or whatever. Whatever I lifted yesterday is what I avoid. Whatever I did 48-72 hour ago is what I'm mentally preparing to hit within the next 12 hours.

Is there a problem with having no rest days? I mean just going with a four day set and constantly repeating? I do a lot of cardio anyways via basketball almost every day.
