Positional Rankings by Division--OLBs

Recommended Posts

NFC North:

This particular grouping was very difficult.

1. Clay Matthews (Green Bay): Until Anthony Barr stays healthy, this is not a discussion.

2. Anthony Barr (Minnesota): Man oh man, can this guy play. He can line up at any linebacker spot, can blitz from anywhere with success, can cover, and has the kind of sideline to sideline speed needed in today's NFL. This is the next star linebacker in the NFC North division.

3. DeAndre Levy (Detroit): Dude is a really good all around player who people have finally noticed over the past couple of years.

4. Julius Peppers (Green Bay): As McCarthy said, this guy is practically ageless. He is NOT the same player by any means but he has adjusted his play as the years have gone on and is still impressive.

5. Tahir Whitehead (Detroit): Very underrated player.

6. Lamarr Houston (Chicago): He's not Justin Houston, but he definitely isn't a slouch, either. Not my favorite LB in the division but I respect him.

7. Pernell McPhee (Chicago): Another solid player. The NFCN has an excellent group of OLBs. Hopefully he can get off the PUP list ASAP.

8. Chad Greenway (Minnesota): He may not be prime Chad Greenway but he's still a more than solid NFL OLB. I'm kind of hoping he gets beat out for the starting role, but if not, he'll obviously earn it in his last year.

Ohhhhh man. This is gonna get cray in the Wild West

1. Khalil Mack :Raiders: Can play the run at an elite level, can rush the passer at an elite lever AND can drop into coverage at an elite level with less talent around him than Von Miller.

2. Von Miller :Broncos:

3. Justin Houston :Chiefs:

4. Aldon Smith :Raiders:

5. Demarcus Ware :Broncos:

6. Tamba Hali :Chiefs:

7. Bruce Irvin :Raiders:

There are more but the AFC West is LOADED with pass rushers. No wonder Peyton retired.

Not as bad as putting Dion Lewis first.

Mack is also playing defensive end in the Raiders 4-3...

1. Von Miller :Broncos: (edge based on being healthy and being more than just an incredible pass rusher. He's also a top 5 guy against the run)

2. Justin Houston :Chiefs:

3. DeMarcus Ware :Broncos:

4. Tamba Hali :Chiefs:

5. Melvin Ingram :Chargers:

6. Shaq Barrett :Broncos:

7. Malcolm Smith :Raiders:

8. Bruce Irvin :Raiders:

9. Kyle Emmanuel :Chargers:

How about you make a valid argument?

How about you do some research and watch both of their tapes and you will see that Khalil Mack is more effective per play than Von Miller is. Mack is a top tier defender against the run and pass, while Von Miller is the better pass rusher but has more around him.

Mack is a more complete player than Von, it's pretty simple.

And if you'd like an article that would maybe educate you a litttle..here you go

Yeah, Mack is better than Von Miller. Miller got paid for sheer pass rushing prowess.

Miller was a human wrecking machine in the playoffs though. Not saying Mack couldn't be, but we know for sure Miller was.

Miller had DeMarcus Ware on the other side of the field, channeling his prime Dallas days, and a secondary so damn good nobody could get open. I'm not saying his isn't great, but I will say he would not be as great without such incredible pieces around him that allow him to maximize his abilities, whereas Khalil Mack is an elite player regardless of team.

This is my point.

Miller has one of the best defense in memory all around him. Ware, Talib, Harris, Ward, and others around him to help him succeed. Mack does more with less. The whole playoff thing is a slightly invalid point. Like..are we going to hold it against Mack that the Raiders didn't make the playoffs? lol

Mack is a better player, if you think otherwise..you should stop watching ESPN and watch people actually play.

Let's not act like Von Miller hasn't always been a dominant force since he's come into the league now. There's an argument, but Von has earned his spot at the top, and now that the Broncos have continued to invest talent on that defense, we've seen just how explosive and unstoppable he can be. Not many players can get into Tom Brady's head like Miller can.

There's more to being an edge defender than rushing the passer....Von Miller is lacking in his run defensive abilities in comparison to Mack.

It's more like Mack is the best, and Miller is 5 or 6 in that category. It's not a wide gulf in difference.

It's also not a gulf wide difference in the pass rush dept...

Tackles aren't the end all be all for stopping the run, not to mention the difference between run stopping assignments in Phillip's 1 gap 3-4 compared to Del Rio's 4-3. Miller is often playing contain while Brandon Marshall and Danny Trevathan were cleaning up the inside.

That picture was not for run stopping purposes. It was simply to point out that Mack is still a competent pass rusher in comparison to Miller without getting to in depth.

Basically... what I'm getting at is

Mack's Run D > Miller's Run D

Miller's Pass Rush > Mack's Pass Rush

Mack in coverage > Miller in coverage

Mack > Miller

In a nutshell

Our 4-3..you should very well know under Ken Norton is not a tradition 4-3. We run a hybrid system that features a lot of 3-4 looks moreso than 4-3. Mack can put his hand in the dirt or be standing up and be effective either way.

I agree with Charles. Mack is better than Miller. Aldon Smith, otoh, is not the 4th best OLB in the AFC West. Not even close.
