Pirates traded Jose Veras to the Brewers for Casey McGehee. I like it.

Albert Pujols' wife Diedre, in an interview with a radio station with ties to the former St. Louis Cardinals slugger, said the couple was prepared to take less money to stay in St. Louis, but were greatly disappointed when the team initially offered him a five-year deal.

Lol Cardinals

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Rockies have signed free agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a three-year, $31.5 million contract.

The figure is a bump up from the three-year, $27 million offer that the Rockies originally proposed, and that's likely what convinced Cuddyer to leave the Twins, who were offering him a three-year, $25 million pact. It's a pretty hefty sum for the 32-year-old corner outfielder, but he should fare well at Coors Field. Cuddyer batted .284/.346/.459 with 20 home runs and 70 RBI over 584 plate appearances this past year for Minnesota.

UPDATE: The Reds just announced that they have acquired Latos from the Padres for first baseman Yonder Alonso, right-handers Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger and catching prospect Yasmani Grandal. OK, this one is looking a lot better for San Diego.

1:12 PM: Well, the Reds have landed the top-flight starter they’ve been looking for all offseason.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Reds have acquired right-hander Mat Latos from the Padres. Yonder Alonso is among the players being sent to San Diego.

Latos has a 3.37 ERA over his first 72 starts in the majors, averaging 8.7 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9. The 24-year-old began this season on the disabled list with a shoulder strain, but ended up posting a 3.47 ERA and 185/62 K/BB ratio over 194 1/3 innings. He is arbitration-eligible for the first time next winter and under team control though 2015. His home/road splits aren’t all that different, so he should do fine with the move to Great American Ballpark.

Alonso is well regarded for his bat, but was blocked at first base in Cincinnati by Joey Votto. He could probably step in as the starting first baseman with the Padres right away, though one wonders what will happen with Anthony Rizzo, who was acquired from the Red Sox in last winter’s Adrian Gonzalez deal. Perhaps new GM Josh Byrnes has another deal on the way.

Like most of you, I’m eager to see who else the Padres got here. Latos was their most valuable chip, so I’m underwhelmed at the moment.

This trade is a HUGE win for the Padres. Wow.

Wow, the Fathers got a massive haul from Cincy. Didn't realize the Reds were willing to pay that much for a guy like Latos, but I guess they figure with Pujols gone they have a chance at the division if they improve their pitching. Still not convinced they're a better team than the Cards, but time will tell.

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN's Buster Olney spoke with a source Monday who suggested that the Rangers might have won exclusive negotiating rights to Japanese righty Yu Darvish.

Many have suspected that the Blue Jays made the highest bid, and the New York Post even crowned Toronto as the winner last week. But Olney spoke to an American League executive Monday afternoon who said the "smart money is on the Rangers." Darvish, 25, posted a sparkling 1.44 ERA and 276/36 K/BB ratio in 232 innings this past season in Japan. The Nippon-Ham Fighters are expected to make an announcement on his probable landing spot Monday night. Dec 19 - 1:41 PM

Looks like Texas or Toronto...we'll find out tonight.

Also, loving that the Phillies were able to re-sign Jimmy Rollins to a (somewhat) cheap deal. Going into the offseason I figured he'd cost about 3/36, so I'll take it.

Ryan Braun's positive test for banned substances was caused by medication he's taking for a private medical issue -- NOT performance enhancing drugs ... this according to sources directly connected with Major League Baseball.

We're told the reigning National League MVP is adamant he has not taken drugs or steroids of any kind.

One source simply told us ... "The medication contained banned substances resulting in the positive test." We're also told prior to taking the dirty test, Braun had always tested negative for banned substances.

The nature of Braun's medical ailment is unclear.

It's also unclear if the Milwaukee Brewers star knew the substances were in his medication before he took it -- though it seems highly unlikely.

So wait, does Braun have an STD or something?

In the first move of the offseason, the Braves re-signed Jack Wilson. Might as well send the Commissioner's Trophy here now.

DETROIT -- What had been a quiet offseason for the defending American League Central champion Detroit Tigers took a disastrous turn Tuesday, when the team announced that designated hitter Victor Martinez suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a winter workout

.An MRI exam taken in Lakeland, Fla., revealed the injury. Martinez is scheduled to get a second opinion from noted orthopedic specialist Dr. Richard Steadman next week, but barring a change in diagnosis, Martinez will most likely undergo surgery and be sidelined for all of the upcoming season.

The injury is a potential crushing blow to a Tigers lineup that wasn't looking at many tweaks from last season, and a clubhouse that benefited greatly from Martinez's arrival last year. Martinez drove in 103 runs batting behind All-Star and batting champion Miguel Cabrera, batting .330 in the process. He gave opponents a punishment for pitching around Cabrera while providing the veteran bat the Tigers lacked around the middle of the order.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers have signed Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million deal.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports first mentioned the possibility less than 10 minutes ago, and now it has become official: Fielder is going to Detroit, the same place his father Cecil spent seven years of his career. The 27-year-old slugger should shine bright for the Tigers, more than making up for the production lost by Victor Martinez's knee injury in 2012 and helping the team remain in the top rung of American League contenders for years to come. Fielder owns a .929 career OPS. He batted .299/.415/.566 with 38 home runs and 120 RBI in 162 games last season for the Brewers.

Per Rotoworld.com:

The Cardinals and RHP Jason Motte avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.95 million contract.

The Cardinals' ninth-inning man requested $2.4 million and was offered $1.4 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last week. The two sides were quickly able to find a middle ground. Motte posted a 2.25 ERA and 63/16 K/BB ratio in 68 innings last season. Jan 25 - 4:48 PM

The Red Sox and RHP Andrew Bailey avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.9 million contract.

Bailey requested $4.7 million and was offered $3.35 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last week. It didn't take long for the two sides to agree somewhere in between. Bailey, acquired via trade this offseason from the A's, will serve as Boston's closer in 2012. Jan 25 - 4:45 PM

According to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez, teams have been informed that Yoenis Cespedes is a free agent.

Get your popcorn ready. Cespedes has already attracted the attention of most of baseball's biggest spenders and will likely have his pick of several lucrative opportunities. The 26-year-old outfielder batted .333/.424/.667 with 33 home runs and 99 RBI in 90 games last season in Cuba. The Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, Tigers, and Indians seem the most interested, but the Nationals, Yankees, Phillies and Blue Jays have also been linked. Jan 25 - 4:31 PM

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Red Sox have made offer to free agent Roy Oswalt.

The dollar amount isn't known, but it's likely a one-year offer. Oswalt has yet to accept, which leads Heyman to believe that he could prefer to pitch with the Rangers, Cardinals or Reds. The veteran right-hander has already turned down an opportunity to sign with the Tigers. Jan 25 - 2:37 PM

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM reports that the Red Sox have also made an offer to Edwin Jackson and prefer him to Roy Oswalt.

Interesting. Jackson obviously doesn't have the resume of Oswalt, but he is nearly six years younger and doesn't have a nagging back condition. He has also thrown at least 199 1/3 innings in each of the past three seasons. While Jackson originally hoped to find a five-year contract valued at around $15 million per season, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported earlier this week that it's "possible" he could accept a one-year deal. I think we're going to be one of the hardest teams of all time to score runs on. We have an awesome group of starters, great defense for the most part in the infield and in the outfield and a bull pen that could potentially be one of the best Major League Baseball next year, but man, we really need to produce more runs this year. The last two years in the playoffs our offense has failed us, but we have been eliminated by the eventual WS winner each of the past 3 seasons and in '08 obviously we won the WS ourselves. Hopefully we win another title because we're getting old fast.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Pitcher Shaun Marcum and the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a one-year contract worth $7,725,000, just ahead of the scheduled start of their salary arbitration hearing.Friday's deal was at the midpoint between the $8.7 million and $6.75 million figures filed by the sides when they exchanged proposed arbitration salaries last month.

Marcum made $4.05 million last year, when he went 13-7 with a 3.54 ERA. He is eligible for free agency after this season.
