NFL Roster Cuts '13

Recommended Posts

NFL teams must trim their rosters from 90 players to 75 players by 4 pm Tuesday. We will then conclude the preseason with the last slate of games, and by 6pm on August 31st, teams will have to shape their final 53 man roster.

That means over the course of the next week, HUNDREDS of players will be hitting Free Agency while teams decide who stays and who goes.

Often times there are a handful of players who are big names that get cut to the shock of many. Feel free to post news regarding your team (or any team, for that matter), players on the bubble, significant cuts, practice squad additions, even low-impact trades etc etc.

High profile players getting cut can have their own thread(s) if you so choose.

Ravens waived WR Tommy Streeter and LB Bryan Hall.

Streeter was a popular spring sleeper, but the hype amounted to nothing once the pads came on. He was no higher than the eighth receiver on the depth chart, getting outplayed by UDFAs like Marlon Brown. Only 23, Streeter will likely get another look elsewhere just because of his size-speed combo. Hall was trying to make the switch from defensive tackle to inside linebacker.

Raiders released KR/WR Josh Cribbs.

Looks like he's done. Knee problems popped up on Cribbs' offseason physicals, and his lack of burst was evident on kickoff returns in preseason games. The Raiders will go with Jacoby Ford as their No. 3 receiver and return specialist.

Lions cut Ronnell Lewis. I'll take some of that please.

QB Graham Harrell was officially released by the Packers and trimming down the WR spot...

#Packers are making more cuts today. WR Justin Wilson was released, per his agent.

#Packers also have released WR Omarius Hines.

WR Alex Gillett is among the players the #Packers have released today. For a college QB, the guy made a nice transition to a new spot.

Steelers waived RB Baron Batch, OT D’Anthony Batiste, OT Mike Farrell, WR David Gilreath, WR Tyler Shaw, CB Ryan Steed, LB Stevenson Sylvester, TE Peter Tuitupou, QB John Parker Wilson, WR J.D. Woods, and RB Jeremy Wright.

Batch showed solid pass protection and receiving skills, but offered nothing as a runner. Pittsburgh will give Felix Jones a look-see now for its final tailback job.

Broncos waived TE Deangelo Peterson, DE Lanston Tanyi, C Quentin Saulsberry, WR Kemonte Bateman, CB Mario Butler, OT Manase Foketi, QB Ryan Katz, LB Uona Kaveinga, and CB Nigel Malone.

They also waived/injured WRs Quincy McDuffie and Greg Orton. Peterson is a former UDFA out of LSU. Saulsberry's fate was likely sealed all the way back in May, when he was arrested on drunk-driving charges.

Giants waived WR Terrell Sinkfield, FB Ben Guidugli, WR Brandon Collins, TE Jamie Childers, TE Chase Clement, OL Michael Jasper, OL Austin Holtz, LB Jake Muasau, LB Etienne Sabino, DT Frank Okam, CB La'Ron Scott, CB Junior Mertile, and S Alonzo Tweedy.

Sinkfield is a blazer with alleged sub-4.2 wheels, but he's now been cut by three NFL teams. There are no other surprises among New York's first cuts.

Eagles released LB Jamar Chaney.

26-year-old Chaney made 23 starts over the past three seasons, but was not deemed roster-worthy by the Eagles' new coaching staff, which is implementing a 4-3. Perhaps old pal Andy Reid will give Chaney another shot in Kansas City.

Falcons waived TEs Colin Cloherty and Tim Biere, FB DeVonte Campbell, LB Nick Clancy, QB Seth Doege, DEs Cam Henderson and Brandon Thurmond, OT Jeff Nady, RB Donald Russell, S Troy Sanders, and C Matt Smith.

Nothing especially notable here. Clancy replaced Luke Kuechly as Boston College's starting Mike 'backer last year. He's not nearly as good as Kuechly.

Eagles released S Kenny Phillips.

Phillips was the 31st overall pick in the 2008 draft. While he's flashed All Pro-type ability in the rare instances he's been healthy, Phillips has not been the latter much over the past several seasons. Another team will likely give Phillips one more shot, but he's running out of time despite only being 26.

Cardinals waived WR Nick Edwards, QB Caleb TerBush, OL Deveric Gallington, OT Joe Caprioglio, DT Jonathan Mathis, LB Korey Jones, DT Cordian Hagans, and CB Ronnie Yell.

Also placing LB Dan Giordano on PUP, the Cardinals are down to 76 players as they work to get to 75 ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Edwards was a UDFA out of Eastern Washington. This group includes no first-cuts surprises.

Giants released LB Aaron Curry.

The former No. 4 overall pick in the draft continues to prove himself a total bust. The most telling sign for Curry's roster chances was that he was a bubble player who didn't even earn significant preseason snaps.

Jaguars waived S Ray Polk, C Mark Asper, P Ken Parrish, CB Lionel Smith, LB Maalik Bomar, LB Jeremiah Green, DE J.D. Griggs, LS Jeremy Cain, DE Paul Hazel, LS Luke Ingram, WR Jamal Miles, and OT Roderick Tomlin.

We hadn't even heard of a handful of these players; you can often tell a team's roster quality by their cuts. The Jaguars don't have much talent and are searching. Polk is the most notable name as a July waiver claim from Seattle.

Bengals released TE Richard Quinn, K/P Quinn Sharp, WR Jheranie Boyd, DT Vaughn Meatoga, CB Terrence Brown, and LB Jordan Campbell.

Quinn is a former Josh McDaniels-Broncos second-round pick out of UNC. He's been a complete NFL flop. There are no surprises among this group.

Eagles waived TE Derek Carrier, DE Eddie McClam, WR Nick Miller, OT Nic Purcell, OL Isaac Remington, TE Will Shaw, DT Daryell Walker, LS James Winchester, and P Brad Wing.

They also waived/injured S Eddie Whitley after a preseason injury. Donnie Jones beat out Wing to be Chip Kelly's punter. Carrier is an excellent athlete, but never made headway up a deep tight end depth chart in Philly.

Raiders waived WR Sam McGuffie, C Andrew Robiskie, DB Cory Nelms, DT Myles Wade, WR Tray Session, FB Jon Hoese, RB Deonte Williams, and LB Eric Harper.

These are the Raiders' first cuts. Once a monster recruit at Michigan, McGuffie turned in a disappointing college career after transferring to Rice. He made no waves in training camp, but could perhaps have a future in the CFL.

Cardinals released K Dan Carpenter.

They're sticking with Jay Feely. Carpenter, 27, drew fairly significant interest following his release by the Dolphins and could resurface quickly.

Bears released WR Devin Aromashodu, TE Leonard Pope, DT Eric Foster, RB Curtis Brinkley, S Derrick Martin, TE Gabe Miller, LB Patrick Trahan, DT Brent Russell, P Tress Way, OT A.J. Lindeman, C P.J. Lonergan, and LB Lawrence Wilson.

They previously cut S Tom Zbikowski and DE Kyle Moore. Chicago is down to 76 players and must make one more roster move ahead of Tuesday's deadline.

Colts waived RB Davin Meggett, C Rick Schmeig, DB Ashante Williams, WR/DB Teddy Williams, WR Maurice Williams, CB Johnny Adams, DB Allen Chapman, OG Danous Estenor, DL Kellen Heard, K Brandon McManus, and LB C.O. Prime.

UDFA "C.O." Prime certainly had the name, but lacked the game. Former Maryland UDFA Meggett couldn't beat out Kerwynn Williams for a roster spot.

Bears released DE Kyle Moore and S Tom Zbikowski.

Moore was signed to a one-year contract in April, a year after starting seven games and registering three sacks for the Bills. He was competing for the No. 4 defensive end job in Chicago, but lost out to rookie Cornelius Washington. Zbikowski had been working with the third- and fourth-team defenses.

Lions waived DE Ronnell Lewis, WR Cody Wilson, and CB Myron Lewis and released S Chris Hope.

Lewis, last year's fourth-round pick, wasn't expected to make the team. The Lions brought in four new defensive ends in the offseason, and Lewis was involved in a bar fight in the spring. Hope is a 12-year veteran.

Stephen Peterman would make a better backup guard than Steve Schilling or Johnnie Troutman.

Well, did he even do anything productive in preseason play?

Seems looking at the depth chart that it's him or Marcus Easley, who has always had a ton of potential and actually has looked good this preseason.

Big names the Jets cut were Joe McKnight and Braylon Edwards. McKnight doesn't shock me TOO much. I thought he was our third best guy but he was only third AT BEST (not up to Ivory and Powell's level).

Braylon wasn't doing much in preseason but jesus...all we have is Holmes and Kerley now. Maybe Clyde Gates...I still don't trust Stephen Hill at all.

Jets are good with cuts until the next dead line.

Actually Stephen Peterman was probably the most shocking cut we had to me at least.

Better to keep him over some hoodlum that hasn't done shit.

Bucs didn't cut anyone too special.

I am surprised the Eagles already got rid of Kenny Philips. I thought he could play a role for them seeing how bad their secondary was last year.

By all means then, let him be cut! I bet the Chargers would take their chances for the talent.

:( Denario

Just keep rolling that dice! You don't normally find receivers on the waiver wire who are young, talented, productive, affordable AND durable. One of those pieces is always missing and that's why they're on the wire. I'm always in favor of small investments that could yield big rewards. Danario ended up getting hurt here, but we aren't out much... about 1M in cap space. It was worth that risk.

Packers cut DT Gilbert Pena, K Georgio Tavecchio, and RB Angelo Pease.

They also appear to be fielding calls for some TEs.

ESPN’s Ed Werder said the Packers are fielding calls about some tight ends because of a surplus there. Werder reports young Brandon Bostick is drawing interest.

Oakland is extremely inexperienced at the position and there is no clear-cut favorite to land the job, especially with David Ausberry hurt. Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie came from Green Bay and has a good relationship with the team’s brass. The problem with adding another young tight end in Oakland is, well, they have plenty of young tight ends. They need an experienced veteran at the spot.

The 49ers announced five players have been waived from the team.

Scott Tolzien, a third-year quarterback, headlined the group. The former undrafted quarterback out of Wisconsin was signed by San Francisco prior to the 2011 season. Tolzien served as the 49ers No. 3 signal-caller the past two years. He was the only quarterback on the roster to not see action in the team’s 34-14 preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.

In addition, San Francisco waived offensive lineman Al Netter, running back D.J. Harper, punter Colton Schmidt and linebacker Joe Holland.

The 49ers roster currently stands at 85. The team will soon announce additional roster moves to trim down to the league mandated 75-man limit by 1:00 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

I can't even express how much stupid hand wringing there was among Charger fans over cutting Tolzien out of camp a couple years ago. You'd have sworn we let go of Andrew Luck. It was amazing in how idiotic it was. Looks like he's really taking the league by storm.

Yup. And the same fans that got their way when we kept Charlie Martin were the first to scream for blood when they saw how good Laurent Robinson did in Dallas. Ridikulus.
