The Redskins will stick with the 3-4 as they transition to the Jay Gruden era, and there aren't many better edge players for the scheme than Orakpo. He's piled up 39.5 sacks in 64 career games and is coming off a career year that saw him grade out as a top-four player at his position according to PFF. Allen has also opened talks with ILB Perry Riley and DB DeAngelo Hall, but re-signing the 27-year-old Orakpo should be the top priority. Last year's top rush linebacker available, Paul Kruger, landed a five-year, $41 million deal with the Browns. Orakpo becomes the fourth NFL player tagged, joining Saints TE Jimmy Graham, Panthers DE Greg Hardy, and Jets K Nick Folk. We were surprised to see a groundswell of support among "Skins fans" for letting Orakpo walk when he's going-away their most valuable player on defense. Although Orakpo has yet to truly realize his immense potential, he's a 27-year-old edge presence who fills hard against the run and recorded ten sacks last season. Refusing to let Orakpo hit the market was a no-brainer move by GM Bruce Allen. BLUE 1,026 Posted October 8, 2014 Per Rotoworld.com: The Washington Post believes the likelihood of contract-year OLB Brian Orakpo getting a big pay day from the Redskins is dwindling. Orakpo, playing on the $11.455 million franchise tag, has just half a sack through five games, and has graded out as a bottom-11 pass-rushing 3-4 outside linebacker at Pro Football Focus. The Redskins could choose to allocate that money elsewhere in 2015 and pay OLB Ryan Kerrigan handsomely while developing second-round rookie Trent Murphy as Orakpo's heir. He'll undergo surgery, and be replaced in the starting lineup by Trent Murphy. It's the third torn pectoral of Orakpo's career, although the first two were on his left side. Yet once again, a terrible Redskins defense in desperate need of playmakers is robbed of one. Orakpo had 12 quarterback hurries, six hits and one sack through seven games, also playing strong run defense. He'll enter free agency this spring as a high-risk, high-reward asset.
