69ers ramping up pursuit of Mike Shannahan

Recommended Posts

The number of head coaching openings around the league is starting to drop with the Browns and Giants finding their men on Wednesday.

The Eagles have reportedly turned their attentiontoward Tom Coughlin, who has also interviewed with the 49ers since parting ways with the Giants. The 49ers may have a different experienced head coach in their sights.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team’s interest in Mike Shanahan has “ramped up considerably” since they interviewed him earlier this week. There was a lot of chatter about their interest in hiring Hue Jackson heading into this week, but Jackson is now in Cleveland and Dirk Koetter, who also interviewed, appears to be closing in on a move from offensive coordinator to head coach in Tampa.

Shanahan has been a head coach with the Raiders, Broncos and Redskins and spent three years as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator under George Seifert from 1992 to 1994. He has been out of the NFL the last two seasons, but interviewed for head coaching jobs last offseason as well.

Stick a fork in the 49ers for the next 5 years at least if this happens...

It's really more like keep the fork firmly in place at this point.

Niners hire Chip Kelly as head coach

Chip Kelly is making his return to West Coast.

The San Francisco 49ers are hiring Kelly as their new head coach, the team announced. General manager Trent Baalke will maintain his power in charge of personnel.

Kelly was fired by the Eagles before the team's Week 17 finale and had only been interviewed by the 49ers. Kelly spent three years in Philadelphia, compiling a record of 26-21. His fast-paced offense ranked third in the league over that span and fourth in rushing yards per game. However, his defenses regressed and consistently ranked near the bottom of the league.

49ers fired OC Geep Chryst.

Chryst was one of 10 Niners assistant coaches let go on Monday. Quarterbacks coach Steve Logan, secondary coach Tim Lewis and defensive line coach Scott Brown were also shown the door. San Francisco finished 20th in total yards in Chryst's lone season as offensive coordinator. Chryst will likely resurface as a quarterbacks coach.

49ers hired Curtis Modkins as offensive coordinator.

Modkins was the only man left after Bills RBs coach Anthony Lynn took himself out of consideration earlier today. The Niners have also tabbed Pat Flaherty as their new offensive line coach. Modkins spent the last three years as Detriot's RBs coach. Before that, Modkins served as the OC under Chan Gailey in Buffalo from 2010-12. Chip Kelly already said he plans to call plays on offense.
