With Cleveland snapping a huge drought last night, I found this article interesting. Who do y'all think will be next to end their drought?

#9 HOUSTON

Franchises: 3

Years: 21

Last Title: 1995 Rockets (NBA)

Total seasons since last championship: 57 (includes the Oilers' last two seasons in Houston)

Closest calls: The Astros made the 2005 World Series, but were swept to the White Sox. The Rockets haven't made it back to the NBA Finals, losing in the 1997 and 2015 Western finals. The Texans never have advanced past the second round since joining the NFL in 2002.

#8 ATLANTA

Franchises: 3

Years: 21

Last title: 1995 Braves (MLB)

Total seasons since last championship: 72 (includes NHL's Thrashers from 1999 to 2011 before move to Winnipeg)

Closest calls: The Braves lost the 1996 and 1999 World Series to the Yankees, blowing a 2-0 lead in 1996 after taking the first two games in New York. The Falcons lost the Super Bowl after the 1998 NFL season and blew a 17-point lead at home in the 2012 NFC championship game against the 49ers, falling 10 yards shy of the go-ahead score in the final seconds.

#7 TORONTO

Franchises: 3

Years: 23

Last title: 1993 Blue Jays (MLB)

Total seasons since last championship: 65

Closest calls: The Blue Jays didn't make the playoffs again until 2015, which was MLB's longest postseason drought, and lost in the AL Championship Series. The Maple Leafs, who haven't been to the Stanley Cup Final since winning in 1967, lost in the 1994 NHL Western Conference final and haven't won a playoff series since 2004. The NBA's Raptors made it out of the second round for the first time this year.

#6 WASHINGTON

Franchises: 4

Years: 25

Last title: 1991 Redskins (NFL)

Total seasons since last championship: 84

Closest calls: The Redskins haven't been to a conference championship game since their last Super Bowl and haven't won a playoff game since the 2005 season. The Capitals have been one of the NHL's biggest playoff underachievers in recent years. They've made just one Stanley Cup Final (1998) and were swept in it. The Bullets/Wizards haven't made it out of the second round of the NBA playoffs since making the 1979 Finals. The Nationals have lost in the divisional round in their two MLB playoff appearances (2012, 2014) since moving from Montreal in 2005.

#5 MINNEAPOLIS

Franchises: 4

Years: 25

Last title: 1991 Twins (MLB)

Total seasons since last championship: 91

Closest calls: The Vikings came agonizingly close to two Super Bowls, collapsing in a pair of NFC championship game losses in 1998 and 2009, and getting blown out in 2000. The Twins haven't made it back to the World Series, losing in the ALCS once and being ousted in the first round five times. The Timberwolves have only made it one NBA conference final and own the NBA's longest playoff drought at 12 years. The NHL's Wild have made it to just one conference final since joining the league in 2000.

#4 MILWAUKEE

Franchises: 2

Years: 45

Last title: 1971 Bucks (NBA)

Total seasons since last championship: 90

Closest calls: The Bucks lost Game 7 of the 1974 NBA Finals at home to the Celtics. They haven't made it back since, losing three conference finals in the 1980s and most recently in 2001. The Brewers squandered a 3-2 lead in the 1982 World Series against the Cardinals and have been back to the playoffs just twice since then.

Note: Many fans consider Green Bay part of the Milwaukee market (the cities are 120 miles apart), so the Packers' 1996 and 2010 Super Bowl triumphs ease the sting of Milwaukee teams' woes. The Packers played a couple of home games each season in Milwaukee and are a regional phenomenon in Wisconsin, so Milwaukee's "drought" is in the eye of the beholder.

#3 CINCINNATI

Franchises: 2

Years: 26

Last title: 1990 Reds (MLB)

Total seasons since last championship: 51

Closest calls: The Reds have not been back to the World Series, advancing to the NLCS just once (in 1995) and making four playoff appearances since winning it all. The Bengals have not won a playoff game since beating the Oilers in the AFC wild-card round after the 1990 season. They are the only team the Texans have beaten in the playoffs and have been bounced in the first round five consecutive seasons.

#2 BUFFALO

Franchises: 2

Years: 51

Last title: 1965 Bills (AFL)

Total seasons since last championship: 96

Closest calls: The Bills lost four consecutive Super Bowls following the 1990-93 NFL seasons, with the most painful being Scott Norwood's missed 47-yard field goal in the dying seconds of Super Bowl XXV against the Giants. The other games were blowouts. The Bills haven't made the playoffs since 1999 (the year they lost on the "Music City Miracle") for the league's longest postseason drought. The NHL's Sabres have lost twice in the Stanley Cup Final, in 1975 and 1999. In the latter loss, Dallas' Brett Hull had his skate in the crease for the series-winning, triple-overtime goal in Game 6, but the officials let it slide, with Sabres fans calling it "no goal" to this day. The Sabres also lost in the Eastern final in 2006 and 2007.

#1 SAN DIEGO

Franchises: 2

Years: 53

Last title: 1963 Chargers (AFL)

Total seasons since last championship: 100

Closest calls: The Chargers have advanced to just one Super Bowl, getting blown out by the 49ers after the 1994 season. They've only played in one AFC championship game (2007) since then, and their long-term future in San Diego is tenuous. The Padres have advanced to two World Series (1984, 1998) and were manhandled each time. They haven't been to the MLB playoffs since 2006.

point of order: shouldn't Houston's be considered longer than Atlanta since the Hawks won the NBA title earlier in 1995 than the Braves won the MLB title? and shouldn't Washington be listed as 1992 since that's when they the Redskins' Super Bowl was? and are we really counting AFL championships?

Pretty sure Houston was listed first, because it was written by a Houston newspaper.

This is false.

Minneapolis has 3 championships since 2011.

if you're gonna throw WNBA in let's include MLS too and say DC has four since 96 and the city's most recent championship was 2004

Guys it's going to be the year droughts are over. The Cavs win the NBA and The Cubbies win the MLB as much as it would hurt.
