Is Jay Cutler the toughest QB in the NFL?

Recommended Posts

There has been a lot of discussion about Cutler's toughness here in Chicago for awhile now. Today it was especially prevelant with Cutler getting beat up in today's Saints game. Many here criticize him, as Chicago sports fans tend to be very tough on their teams. I think a lot of people took a second look today, though. I honestly believe he is, as Urlacher said last year, "tough as hell." He takes a beating back there, a combination of Martz's exposure of the QB and the weak o-line he has.

I think most people were questioning his demeanor not his toughness and ya Culter is a tough SOB.

Tough is not a way in which I would describe Jay Cutler. Tough players don't go and sulk on the sideline.

Come talk to me when your QB comes back down 10 in the 4th to win in OT with a fractured rib. ;)

Really, every QB not named Manning and Brady take a beating. Toughness, in regards to a QB, is (imo) determined by if they can play through injuries and such. Not if they can take hits and get back up. Everyone does that (except Matt Stafford).

To me, toughness isn't just taking a beating behind a poor offensive line and walking off the field after it. Toughness is getting up after the hit and continuing to lead your team in the game and put them in a position to win. Someone who doesn't give up when the going gets tough. Cutler doesn't do that. Cutler quits. And pouts.

We can go back and forth with pictures of QBs slumping on the sidelines. You'll find them for any QB.

And he does his best to get up and lead the team, but he can't get a pass off. The o-line got worse and worse today. I am going to estimate 90% of plays in the 4th quarter he had less than three seconds to get rid of the ball. Dealing with a bad o-line and an OC who's playcalling has been getting QBs hurt for years definitely makes a guy tough.

He doesn't do anything to pump the team up. He is not a leader, he is not a franchise QB, and he isn't even that good. 3 strikes and you are out.

Jay Cutler does not approve of my assessment.

Toughness isn't just a physical thing, it's an attitude. And Jay Cutler has one of the worst attitudes in the game of football.

I've never viewed Cutler as "tough". I see him more as a whining crybaby with an inflated ego, though he's accomplished zilch.

I thought Big Ben had won this title years ago. I wasn't aware it changed.

Jay Cutler is extremely tough, physically, at least. He has been hit... A lot, a whole lot. These last two/three years, and he continues to get up, and keep playing. And while his play does take a hit, every QB's play would take a hit if they got hit as much as Cutler is. Cutler continues to play through the hits, with minimal talent at wideout, and an abysmal line, the fact that he's been hit so much, and he continues to play has to be acknowledged as being tough-- At least as far as being physically tough goes. He's special for that, one of the toughest in the league, it's something that a lot of QBs (Stafford) does not have, he deserves respect for at least that.

Mentally, it's a bit of a different story, he does fold often under pressure and allows the hits to effect him mentally, he wines occasionally... But can you seriously blame a guy for all that if his entire offense outside of one, two players are average to below average? Not only is his Oline abysmal but the talent at wideout is pretty bad, the Bears with that Oline struggle to open up any holes... He threw the ball 46 times for God sakes! To almost bottom of the league receivers while getting clobbered on every other play mind you. There are very few QBs who could/would continue to play under the conditions Jay Cutler has been playing and still produces week in and week out.

Despite some people's love for belittling Cutler's toughness he is up there in terms of QBs. He has to be. Some of you guys are really overlooking the kind of things Cutler has had to deal with.

RT @toddarcher Just filed to @ESPNDallas that Tony Romo suffered punctured lung Sunday. Doesn't change status for Sunday, according to source

Interesting how "tough" is applied almost exclusively to QB's, it's as if we are surprised that men their size can play the game against 'monsters' and survive. To get to this level you have to be tough physically, what puts you over the top is your mental toughness, and they are not mutually exclusive.

All QB's are pretty tough in both regards... just not Vince "Dream Team" Young

I support the fact that Cutler IS one of the toughest in the league. For the meer fact that week by week he is getting hit an enormous amount of times. But he always seems to get back up.

The playoffs where everyone said he wasn't tough, and was a baby, was a bunch of crap. He was injured. Just because a guy isn't smiling and cheering, doesn't mean he doesn't want to be in the game. It's called focused, and pissed off that he's NOT in the game.

No and he isn't any where near the toughest. Being tough isn't just about getting battered after every hurry/sack and being able to get up again, you have to be mentally tough and he proved he is a pussy in both categories last season by giving up against the Packers in the playoffs he got the "injury" and saw his way out. F4E is right the QB needs to be a leader and Cutler doesn't do anything to show he is.

Tough QB for sure but toughest? How do you even measure that? I'd put Romo up there with his antics on Sunday.

Quit trying to impress the packers fan on this site and quit with your packer homerism and bear bashing you dumb cunt it's getting quite annoying. There are two different kinds of toughness mentally and physically dude was sacked almost 100 times since he has been here. Physically he is one tough son of a bitch. That right there proves to me you don't know shit. Dude had a MCL tear on his planting foot, do you have anybody idea what that can do to a qb ? I'd rather have Caleb Hanie in than having Jay Culter not nearly close to 75%.That being said Romo's performance is NFL top ten worthy.

I second this. Bangy, I'm sorry to inform you of this, but you know nothing about football. You simply demean other teams to get attention. Then people start to ignore it, so you switch teams to get even more attention.

So I think Romo has sort of claimed the title for toughest QB physically after last weekend. Nonetheless, Jay is a tough QB.

Tony Romo is damn impressive by playing through a punctured lung, and hell he even played great!

But being hit every single week as many times as Cutler is, and continuing to get up and throw the football well, that's amazing. And that does prove to me that he's tough. There are a crap load of QB's that if they were hit as often as Cutler is, would just deteriorate. Even guys like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning show up lame if they are hit.

One manner in which I will back Jay Cutler regards his diabetes. That is one nasty disease. Not only do you rarely feel normal, you're almost always feeling sick or groggy beyond belief. I've watched my old man for years, and I have no idea how he deals with it. It affects the way he feels physically to the extent that it alters his ability to control his temper. That's something that's long been known about diabetes, and I'm sure it's the same for Cutler. Insulin doesn't cure you, it only makes you able to get by and continue to live.

Imagine playing football every Sunday either feeling somewhat sick or sleepy beyond anything you'd expect. It would suck. I give him 100% credit for that part of his toughness.

This

Chris Simms is the toughest QB that comes to my mind, playing 2 or 3 quarters with a ruptured spleen? That's tough IMO.

Too bad he's not a good QB though...but I'd probably take him over Cassel right about now.
