One BCS computer ranking has Notre Dame #1

Recommended Posts

You saw the BCS Championship Game, right? Well, at least the parts that mattered before turning to something more interesting, most notably Alabama rolling to a huge lead over Notre Dame and ESPN showing A.J. McCarron's girlfriend.

So you know that Alabama is the best team in the nation. Nobody in their right mind would pick Notre Dame ahead of Alabama after witnessing the carnage that was 42-14 on Monday night.

Oh, but the BCS has a computer that still prefers the Irish. So let the BCS bashing continue.

The Colley Matrix, one of the six computer systems used by the BCS, has Notre Dame ranked No. 1 and the Crimson Tide No. 2. Notre Dame's final ranking was 0.973997 to Alabama's 0.961139. Notre Dame had an edge in strength of schedule. Alabama won more games against top 25 teams in the rankings. Margin of victory is not part of the calculations. No matter how the computer spit out that reading, it's worth mentioning again: An entity the BCS uses still prefers Notre Dame to Alabama.

They're not going to make Alabama give back the trophy over it or anything, and it's just one of the many rankings the BCS uses to determine who plays in the final game (not who is awarded the championship) but it just shows once again that there are flaws in the process.

In certain ways, only one more year of this garbage without a real playoff system. In the meantime, we can sit around the fire and laugh at incomprehensible things like this.

Would have liked to see Alabama vs A&M. That would have been the shit.

A real playoff system?

lmao, Have you actually seen what they're going to be using? It's not even close to a "real playoff system". It's as big of a joke as the BCS is.

The system is a failure and don't think the playoff system will fix it. The playoff system coming into effect is confusing. It seems 12 spots will open. But only 4 of them matter, the rest will be just regular BCS bowl games with a lot of money involved. The "selection committee" selects its top 4 teams, any team in theory can make it. But lets be honest, heavy bias will come into play. Lets use a MAC school for example, even if they have a 12-0 season and top 5 SOS (in theory) do you really think they would let them in over a 10-2 team like Ohio St? Nope, because Ohio St fans travel well and they see dollar signs. Thats all college football is about is money.

I'm disappointed no one has said that there's a glitch in the Matrix yet.

A 4-team playoff is a drastic improvement over the current system.

Meh. It is definitely an improvement... but the selection process is practically identical. Doesn't solve a whole lot other than the fact, hopefully teams like Notre Dame get snuffed out in their first game.

It's not perfect, but it's leaps and bounds better than what it has been. The thing is though, now you're gonna have an even bigger debate about who should be 4, plus the top two teams will probably be bickering over who should be seeded where. The chaos factor isn't really going to get any better, but at the end of the day, it's a playoff system. That's a win for everyone.

Considering there will be automatically one non BCS school in the playoff every year, they'll be safe.

Of course, I don't think thats a good idea either.

I think it's a great idea. This rule is necessary IMO. Otherwise, we'd be almost guaranteed to never see a non-BCS school in the playoffs. Who wants to see Florida, LSU, Alabama, and then the next best BCS conference school—OK, OSU, USC, Texas, etc...—every single year?
