Browns Hire Mike Pettine as 1,845th Head Coach in Franchise History

Recommended Posts

Our long national nightmare is over.

The Cleveland Browns have a coach.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns have reached a deal with Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to become their head coach.

That brings to a close a long and winding search to find a replacement for one-and-done Rob Chudzinski.

Pettine brings a different approach to the job, and wasn’t among the first crop of names mentioned for the job. But he flew into Cleveland today and apparently has struck a deal.

He was one of 10 candidates to interview for the job, along with (take a deep breath) Dan Quinn, Todd Bowles, Josh McDaniels, Ken Whisenhunt, Ben McAdoo, Mike Munchak, Rich Bisaccia, Dirk Koetter and Greg Schiano.

Of that group, Bowles and McDaniels took their names out of the running, and Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase declined a chance to interview.

At first I was like, "Who in their right fucking mind would want to be the head coach for the Cleveland Browns?!"

Then I was like, "Oh yeah... Someone who coaches for the Buffalo Bills!"

One thing Pettine is constantly searching for: BITCH-KITTIES, his term for havoc-wreaking pass rushers. He'd thrive in AFC North. #Browns

And now our defense will be called the Bitch-Kitties for his entire tenure. I'm a fan.

Pretty sure the TGP staff would have been a better hire.

EDIT:

Looks like Browns new head coach, Mike Pettine, wanted to hire Packers RB coach Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator. Pettine decided to stay in GB and take a "promotion" to QB coach instead. Packers had the right to block an interview, which I am not sure happened or not.

I'm really sad that we've been passed over.

Oh well, there's always next year.

Speaking Thursday, new Browns coach Mike Pettine praised Brian Hoyer, calling him a "winner," and saying his intangibles are "off the charts."

"Winner" and "intangibles" are words typically thrown around when a coach doesn't have anything specific to say, but we don't think Pettine was beating around the bush. Hoyer's intangibles are certainly better than Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell's. That being said, it's almost impossible to believe the Browns are going to throw their weight behind Hoyer without adding some serious competition, perhaps in the form of a first-round pick. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Hoyer's recovery from his torn ACL is "going well."

I don't know how he'll be as a head coach, but he did a great job as our DC. Stinks that he's gone.

Cleveland has quite a few bitch-kitties. :yep: With that defense he is going to absolutely wreak havoc.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer mentions Bears QBs coach Matt Cavanuagh as a potential candidate to fill the Browns' offensive coordinator vacancy.

The paper is simply throwing names against the wall, but Cavanaugh's name stood out. He and coach Mike Pettine have a connection that runs deep. Cavanaugh helped Pettine land his first NFL job with the Ravens in the early-2000s. Cavanaugh was Baltimore's OC from 1999-2004. Pettine and Cavanaugh then worked together with the Jets. Cavanaugh just wrapped up his first season as Bears QBs coach and got a combined big season out of Jay Cutler and Josh McCown.

ESPN Redskins blogger John Keim reports the Browns are "now talking to" ex-Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy.

It's the first we've seen Shanahan linked to the Browns, though the Cleveland Plain Dealer also wondered if Shanahan was a candidate for the OC job Tuesday morning. Shanahan's star has faded a bit over the past calendar year, but he's still viewed as a bright, young mind. If the Browns were to peg Shanahan as offensive boss, it would be tremendous news for Josh Gordon. Andre Johnson and Pierre Garcon were target monsters under Shanahan in the past.

Browns HC Mike Pettine said he'll push OLB Barkevious Mingo to gain weight.

The No. 6 pick in last year's draft, Mingo was something of a disappointment as a rookie. Operating mostly as a rotational edge rusher at 6'4/241, he posted five sacks and 18 hurries on 668 snaps. We're expecting Mingo and the entire Browns defense to live up to their sizable talent under Pettine, a Rex Ryan pupil that guided the Bills to 57 sacks last year (second in the NFL).

The Cleveland Plain Dealer confirms Patriots OC Josh McDaniels remained in the running for the Browns' head-coaching vacancy "right up until the end."

There was a big to-do when McDaniels "withdrew" from consideration to replace Rob Chudzinski, but he reportedly requested to re-enter the mix "within about 24 hours." According to reporter Mary Kay Cabot, McDaniels' candidacy was a point of contention between since fired GM Mike Lombardi and CEO Joe Banner. Cabot believes McDaniels was likely the Browns' other "mystery finalist" alongside Mike Pettine, and not Seahawks DC Dan Quinn. McDaniels should hop right back on the coaching carousel in 2015.
