Kirk Cousins open to a trade

Recommended Posts

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Kirk Cousins is open to an offseason trade.

Per Schefter, Cousins "believes he is ready to start" and has already made that clear to Redskins brass, which declared Robert Griffin III its starter immediately after hiring Jay Gruden as coach. Schefter reports the Redskins "are expected to receive calls from quarterback-needy teams." After the Browns hired Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator, they make sense as a potential Cousins landing spot. Cleveland should still tread lightly. Cousins has a poor man's Andy Dalton skill set and isn't worth more than a third- or fourth-round draft pick.

In an attempt to drive Kirk Cousins' trade value up, it was completely shattered with the worst DVOA of all qualifying QB's last year. (Blaine Gabbert was a whole lot worse, but he didn't crack the required attempts needed). Buyer Beware.

Well, he's proven that he's really good at leading his team to one point losses. If that's what you're looking for, he's your guy. ;)

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN's Chris Mortensen stated on NFL Insiders that new Browns OC Kyle Shanahan "loves" Kirk Cousins.
ESPN NFC East reporter Dan Graziano chimed in, saying he recently spoke to an executive on a quarterback-needy club who "wouldn't give up more than a three (third-round pick)" for Cousins. Cousins has essentially asked the Redskins to trade him, but they won't get a premium draft choice. The Browns do have a lot of 2014 picks and could conceivably make Washington a mid-round offer. A source tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the Browns are "highly unlikely" to trade for Kirk Cousins.

New Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan reportedly "loves" Cousins and the Redskins backup wants a chance to start. But the Plain Dealer is calling a trade a "remote possibility," and NBC News4 is hearing from sources that the Browns believe Brian Hoyer is a better option. We agree. Prior to an ACL tear, Hoyer led the Browns to two wins, averaging 295.0 yards while throwing five touchdowns and three interceptions. He makes for a fine bridge to the franchise quarterback Cleveland needs to find in the draft.

Kirk Cousins underwent LASIK eye surgery on Tuesday.

Cousins is hopeful the operation will lead to improved on-field play. "In this league the difference between Pro Bowl and getting cut is that small," Cousins said. "The more you can see out of the corner of your eye — blitzes, pass protection, open receivers — all of it is effective." Slightly better vision is hardly going to be a game-changer for Cousins, but it's a classic "couldn't hurt."

While it's not been fully credited -- Jermaine Kearse was a PS/fringe WR for Seattle in 2012. He had lasik surgery and ended up being a very strong contributor on this team and his play took a mammoth leap forward.

Obviously he was a rookie one year and a veteran the next. But his confidence between last year and this year was like night and day.

The Washington Post reports Kirk Cousins is "going nowhere."

Cousins means more to the Redskins than he would bring back in a trade. He's a valuable backup, and no team in its right mind is going to give up a premium draft pick for a guy with a career 68.6 quarterback rating and 8:10 TD:INT ratio. The only way Cousins could get his wish and be traded out of Washington is if a needy team fails to land a quarterback in May's draft and panics and offers up a high 2015 draft pick. We fully expect Cousins to be holding the clipboard in D.C.

Wise decision by the skins.

A source tells the Washington Post that the Redskins want a second-round pick in exchange for Kirk Cousins.

They're highly unlikely to get it. Cousins profiles as more of a plus backup than a quality starter, as evidenced by his 56.2 completion percentage, 51.5 QBR and 8:10 TD-to-INT ratio in eight career games. It would be a sign of absolute desperation if a quarterback-needy team gave up a second-rounder for Cousins. The most likely outcome here has him returning to Washington as Robert Griffin III's backup.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Redskins "have no plans" to trade Kirk Cousins.

"He's not going anywhere," Schefter added. The Redskins were said to be seeking a second-round pick for their backup quarterback, and we'd find it hard to believe they'd turn that down if one was offered to them. However, there's little chance any team is willing to surrender that type of compensation for Cousins. He simply means more to the Redskins as a reliable backup to RGIII.

I'm not so sure "plus-starter" is the term that can describe Cousins so much, as opposed to perhaps describing him merely as a guy who hasn't seen enough playing time to really learn and adjust to the speed of the game.

Kirk Cousins again stated his desire to be a starter.
This story just won't die. Cousins is like just about every other NFL backup in that he wants to get on the field consistently and prove to the world he's a difference-maker. But he's entering the third year of a four-year contract and the Redskins reportedly want a second-round pick in exchange for their RG3 insurance plan. It's not going to happen, meaning Cousins needs to accept his role in Washington and not be a distraction.
