31. The Rezillos - Destination Venus (3.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcLr0m_LT-E

Nominated by: Bay

I don’t mind this at all. Unlike a lot of punk that seems to be bad on purpose, this has something fun to it that you can really get just from the opening riffs. Sadly I don’t have too much to say about this, although for punk it is surprisingly easy listening which is great and unusual. It also fakes you out and makes you think the song is over when there is still thirty seconds left of thrashing to do.

Epic space rhymes :smug:

Rating the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song anything less than a 5/5 is a sin.

I would have been fine with that, in fact I half expected that, the music can be polarizing (and I'm well aware that I included a polka) but at least then you would be following through with the thread

30. Bad Religion - Fuck Armageddon, This is Hell (3.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ONlH9ieqgc

Nominated by Terry

I don’t know what’s going on, but that’s cool, that’s fine, it sounds nice and that’s all that matters. Whether this has depth, or anything I can get snobbish about.. well it doesn’t but that’s not always relevant. Sometimes a song is just a song, like arson is just about setting things on fire. It doesn’t matter what you’re setting on fire, so long as it burns nice.

29. Himsa - Wolfchild (3.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHHMzfJHyY4

Nominated by: BWare

I can always count on BWare to find good metal for me to listen to. Love the guitars and drums here, they exude raw power. The vocalist isn’t really screamy enough, or he’s too screamy. Sort of in this awkward position where he’s not really in harmony with the rest of the piece. This is supposed to be death metal, but it’s not… deathy enough. I’ll accept it as melodic metal, but again the singer isn’t quite there either…? I dunno, it’s a small complaint, and I am just loving the rest of it enough to let it slide.

28. Dayseeker - The Earth Will Turn (3.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3Akvb1Fny8

Nominated by: OAK

I don’t hate it, but it doesn’t stun me like some of the other pieces you’ve nominated. It’s very easy to listen to, and I actually like the singer for the first time, so hey, awesome stuff. The problem I have with it is that I feel like I’ve heard it a dozen times before. That may seem like a weird critique, and there isn’t anything technically wrong with that, I’m just always a sucker for something new and special. This is still executed very well, and deserves some props for that.

27. Atreyu - Right Side of the Bed (3.5/5)

Nominated by tMHG

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqtDJyWlRFQ

I do like this. It’s got a strong catchy beat, and definitely has some of the pieces you need for a great rock/metal song. The riffs are great, the drummer has some chops and the vocals are pretty good, but lacking something distinct. Vocals is definitely the hardest part to get right, so I’m not gonna be too harsh about that. I absolutely love the solo at the end, and it once again reminds me of the old Madden soundtracks where I’d basically have 4 songs on repeat and Atreyu had one of them. Wasn’t this one, but still.

26. The Lion King - Circle of Life (4/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W_Zblr09Y0

Nominated by: JD

This is very relaxing. Hits on the nostalgia factor for sure, and while I found the vocals to be slightly grating, that’s more or less understandable considering exactly what the song is supposed to be doing. It’s a very enjoyable piece, and the theatrics certainly helped a fair deal.

Lol I don't know about all that. I was definitely going for the last place song with the Super Chargers theme song from the 80s.

Razor, I have to say I thought you would've liked Curl of the Burl more than you did. Best opening line: "I killed a man because he killed my goat". It has lovely instrumentals, and is just overall a quirky Mastodon song. Damn. I am happy the Clansman made it as far as it did. It's even better live if you haven't heard it (see: Rock in Rio).

20. Hurt - Dirty (4/5)

Nominated by: Vin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB8pdRK3CJw

The groove is good, and though the singer sounds like he’s singing through a bowl of beef minestrone, he has a good...attitude I guess. You can’t understand a word he’s saying, but he does elevate the song with his vocals. I’m gonna find out the lyrics are really stupid, probably. Again, it’s got the good classic rock beats, and I can always enjoy those. It’s not particularly complex, but it’s good at what at is, and that’s all a song needs to be sometimes. Your selection has recovered Vin.

19. Hippie Sabotage - Sunny (4/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeU0LjcxSn8

Nominated by: BLUE

This is a really relaxing jam. The way the music blooms is pretty great as it builds up into it’s second half. The psuedo vocals sound hypnotic as they make you feel like smiling and it sounds very good. My only issue with it is that the song sort of feels like it’s constant buildup and then just ends abruptly, like if Harry Potter ran into a Dementor and then was suddenly ganked out of nowhere. So it’s very good, but it doesn’t quite get there for me.

18. Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World (4/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST86JM1RPl0

Nominated by: Bay

This is a very good song. Horrendously overplayed, yes. However that alone should not denounce something. I am not a hipster, just because something is popular does not make it terrible. So um… what can I say about these guys? I love the vocals, love the lyrics, and cannot stand how 80’s all of their hairstyles are. The 80’s was like the worst decade ever. <_ ok not even close the is probably cheesiest decade though.>

17. Adventure Club - Do I See Colour (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7BZwEgTOIM

Nominated by: BLUE

*Sniffs a whole bunch of catnip* Let’s do this. This reminds me a lot of She, and She is pretty amazing, so props to you for this. The beat is slick as hell, and the synth vocals are a pleasant addition to the song. It’s not going out of it’s way to be hard as fuck, but it’s sending it’s own message. I’m here, accept me and if you want to shake your ass on the dance floor I’m cool with that.

16. Eric B and Rakim - Don’t Sweat the Technique (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM5sIBIRDLQ

Nominated by: BLUE

Don’t tell me what to do Rakim! Well actually this song is pretty great, so I can’t have that suffice as a writeup. The beat is so funky and jazzy, the rhymes are the good part of 90’s rap before it got all political and gang empowered. Why can’t modern rap have beats like this? Basslines make songs so much better, friend. I don’t have much to say about it, but Rakim and Eric B fucking kill it.

15. Common - Go (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofdJuFI18rU

Nominated by: BLUE

YES! I love the drums, the entrancing chant of Go Go Go to lead into the first verse, and then it just fucking kills it from there. the lyrics are crude but clever, and I can always appreciate several dirty jokes being served rapid fire. The song oozes a sexiness about it and I absolutely love how the ending fades out with a disk scratching, definitely makes listening to the chorus for the last minute a lot more tolerable.

14. Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0H3RlaQVrM

Nominated by - TMHG

This is not my favourite Coheed song, but it’s very good. I’m glad that Rock Band gave this band some much needed popularity, and if you want to listen to something really good from them, check out both of The Afterman Albums. In any case, getting back on track, the opening hits you with raw unadulterated passion, and then it just revs up the tempo from there. The guitar solo is slick as hell, and the Wooo ohhh ohhhhoohhh to close out the song is fucking great. I love this song.

13. Dark Tranquility - Therein (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irHFnTkQfXg

Nominated by - BWare

Most of the time with metal songs, I like the small kind of flitting reprieves from the meat and potatoes of the song, but in this case it’s the opposite with the ‘tranquil’ parts being the bulk of the song. I’m not quite sure why, but this song is slick, the vocals are powerful, and the structure really works for it. There are a few moments where it feels less like the singer is singer and more like he’s reading off the most metal grocery list, but small complaints. This is a very good song.

12. Parkway Drive - Vice Grip (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ItHNdrPEh0

Nominated by: OAK

Before the vocals started it almost sounded like a metal pirate shanty. That changed rather quickly, but hey, whatever. You’ve got to love when a great guitar riff carries a piece. This song has a lot of power to it, but it’s channeled well, the song has a very clear direction, the transitions are done exceptionally well, and RISE! RISE! Is just fucking great. The music video is just terrible though, I’m glad I’m only sort of paying attention to it and not including good music video as criteria for ranking. A very fun song that went just the right amount of time.

11. The Wallflowers - One Headlight (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzyfcys1aLM

Nominated by - TMHG

Oh! This is one of those songs I’ve heard a lot but never knew who it was by. Sometimes songs are popular because they are manufactured to be popular, like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift’s entire discography. And sometimes songs are just popular because they hold strong on their own merit. This definitely has it’s own merit. The lyrics are catchy, and the instruments do a great job of playing a complementary role to the singer. While I’m used to songs where the guitar is the star, sometimes the singer needs a little love too.

That leaves us with the top 10, and we're down to the last 5 users, OAK and TMHG are dead now. Which song will come out on top?

Vin (1):

A Perfect Circle - The Pakage

Bay (3):

Rainbow - Light in the Black

Blue Hawaii - Dream Electrixia

Neon Indian - Terminally Chill

BWare (3)

Jason Isbell - Elephant

Sturgill Simpson - Turtles all the Way Down

Soilwork - The Living Infinite I

BLUE (1)

A Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation

MOTM (2)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dosed

Prism - Spaceship Superstar

hahaha, it all makes sense now. Anyway, THIS ENDS TONIGHT!

10. Jason Isbell - Elephant (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClugMhMbrRg

Nominated by: BWare

This is smooth. I’m not in love with the lyrics, but there’s a great flow about it. I typically like songs with a lone guitar, or a lone piano, because they add so much to the vocals of a song. And then you listen to it, and you start feeling sad when you realize what it’s actually about. And that’s good. All good country music is depressing as fuck. Remember when life was good? Yeah, it’s not, everything sucks.

9. Prism - Spaceship Superstar (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSyYqD9v_wo

Nominated by Terry

Excellent, this is just a lot of fun, and that’s something that is important. The instrumentals just make it feel like you’re going on a journey to the moon to rock out with some cosmic space whales (but never fuck whales). The solo to end the song is pretty fucking amazing, like you’re tripping balls on Rainbow Road. Very pleasant to listen to.

8. RHCP - Dosed (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS-YTlJZOl0

Nominated by: Terry

How chill do I feel? Pretty chill. This is mondo relaxation, and a nice change of pace from finishing up Charlie’s list all at once. Although this went straight from chill to a little bit sad. RHCP has always been pretty transitional, easy to listen to, and just good all around. This song is no different. I won’t call it a masterpiece, but it is very good throughout, from vocals to instrumentation. Give it to me!

7. Blue Hawaii - Dream Electrixia (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7cZE0P-Jew

Nominated by: Bay

Youtube is dropping some serious subliminal messages here. You get hit by a cloud of sound, but it feels right, as you absorb the haunting vocals into your skins, as the synthesisers work their magic, beating the boredom out of our skin one beat at a time. This is very nice, very chill and very lax. It’s not something I could listen to over and over again, but for a three minute shot of chillax, it does a very good job.

6. Soilwork - The Living Infinite I (4.5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zc0EhFEvs60

Nominated by - BWare

Oh hey, I know this band. And I actually really like them too. This is how you do Melodic Death Metal. While Himsa had most of the pieces, Soilwork has the vocals complement the music and that does so much more for this song. I absolutely love the bridge from about 2:00 to 2:30 as it builds up this really elating solo to finish the song. It’s short, but it’s sweet.

That leaves us with 5. A Perfect Circle, Rainbow, Neon Indian, A Tribe Called Quest and Sturgill Simpson. Only one can win.

5. Sturgill Simpson - Turtles all the Way Down (5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gBV-Nzq7Pg

Nominated by: BWare

Holy crap… I can actually dig this. Like a lot. The vocals aren’t awful, the music is so chill, it changes up from time to time, and it’s actually a pleasure to listen to. The lyrics are clever and it shows a deep inspiration most people only find under the influence of psychedelics. This was a real treat, thank you. I just hate it for being so short.

4. A Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation (5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9B7rxtxZs4

Nominated by: BLUE

It adds a lot when you can understand what the hell other rappers are saying when they rap. The beat is super chill, and Q-Tip is hypnotic with the way he spits rhymes. BLUE knows I like the Tribe, and this is actually probably my favourite song by them. Some of the lyrics are just hilarious and this isn’t any exception. Excellent choice.

3. Rainbow - Light in the Black (5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYrW3yONR44

Nominated by: Bay

It’s DIO! There’s a reason why the man is a legend and songs like this show exactly why. I love the riffs, the soothing cheesiness of the lyrics, and the beat of the drums. The solos are like taking a trip to the future after being sent back to the 1970’s first. Gotta love that synthy beat.

2. A Perfect Circle - The Package (5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqJJwv_Caaw

Nominated by: Vin

There we go, this song has what you’re looking for. A very appealing buildup, giving you this sense of mystery, and the vocals are soft and haunting to add to this very mesmerizing feeling. This is a very good Tool song. Ok fine, a Perfect Circle isn’t Tool, but they’re close enough to me. The bass line is ever present, and I love me some good bass. Then it gets hardcore about 4 minutes in and just overwhelms you with power, and it is good. This is very powerful all the way through, and still manages to feel good to listen to.

1. Neon Indian - Terminally Chill (5/5)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD5rSr1Yt2o

Nominated by: Bay

Uh… yeah I can really enjoy this. This is like all the best parts of ELO bombarding you at once. I wonder if psychedelics would enhance the experience of listening to this song… probably. This song takes you places, it changes up what it’s doing, where it’s going with the instruments, and you feel like you’re going on a journey to the farthest reaches of the universe with nothing but a snow shovel and a winning smile.

Razor, Turtles All the Way Down is from a crazy album called Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. There's a few more trippy songs like Just Let Go (Simpson references Bardo in this song...Who would think a country artist would have an effing clue what Bardo is?) and It Ain't All Flowers, which has a more psychedelic instrumental arrangment. Simpson also has heavy bluegrass influences so there's a lot of great guitar work in his music.

Great list. I'm really happy that you dug Turtles... and Elephant. Two of my favorite songs.
