Me and two friends went out tonight for some food and beer, and after we left we just chilled in the parking lot for a bit. It's a busy plaza, so cars are driving back and forth and what not... Eventually, one drives by with such a great use of decals I had to take a picture once the driver parked it.

This is what the English language looked like over 1,000 years ago. This is a poem that was written around the year 731 by a poet named Caedmon. You'll notice that some of the words survived and we still use them today.

Nu sculon herigean / heofonrices weard,

meotodes meahte / and his modgeþanc,

weorc wuldorfæder, / swa he wundra gehwæs,

ece drihten, / or onstealde.

He ærest sceop / eorðan bearnum

heofon to hrofe, / halig scyppend;

þa middangeard / moncynnes weard,

ece drihten, / æfter teode

firum foldan, / frea ælmihtig.

- Caedmon c. 731

Translated into Modern English:

Now we must praise / heaven-kingdom's Guardian

the Measurer's might / and his mind-plans,

the work of the Glory-Father, / when he of wonders of every one,

eternal Lord, / the beginning established.

He first created / for men's sons

heaven as a roof, / holy Creator;

then middle-earth / mankind's Guardian,

eternal Lord, / afterwards made --

for men earth, / Master almighty.

Pretty interesting stuff, IMO.
