Update: Eagles trade Kolb to the Cardinals

Recommended Posts

A year ago at this time, Eagles coach Andy Reid suddenly changed his tune regarding Donovan McNabb. After calling McNabb his starter then going silent, Reid announced at the league’s owner’s meetings that the Eagles were entertaining offers for McNabb.

Reid quietly made a similar admission this week about Kevin Kolb, even if it wasn’t as dramatic.

As pointed out by the Philadelphia Daily News, Reid told the Eagles’ website this week the team has received feelers on Kolb.

“People have shown a little interest [in Kolb], and as this thing picks up, I’m sure it will continue,†Reid said. “Listen, we’ll sit back and we’ll evaluate.â€

Translation: We’re open for business. When it’s allowed.

The tricky part for the Eagles is that it may not be allowed until after the NFL draft, and they may no longer want to deal Kolb at that time. The Eagles could benefit from the NFLPA winning their injunction to re-start league business, because Kolb’s pricetag figures to be highest before he draft. It’salso possible that wouldn’t even happen until after the draft.

Either way, this is the clearest sign yet Reid is looking for a good deal on Kolb. Just like he was with McNabb a year ago.

“[Kolb's] ours,†Reid said. “Everything else from there is easy. It’s kind of like what I said last year. I f people are interested, they’ll come to you.â€

There is already one team willing to give up a first-round pick for Kevin Kolb, a source tells SI's Peter King.

The anonymous team could be anyone from Seattle to Minnesota or even San Francisco. According to King, Eagles coach Andy Reid is now "looking for a team with a higher choice in the round to make him a better deal." If a quarterback-starved team decides the 26-year-old Kolb is better than the signal-callers available in the draft, Reid just may end up with a top-12 pick. Source: SI.com

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer's "best guess" is that the first-round pick offered to the Eagles for Kevin Kolb is the Seahawks' at No. 25 overall.

Citing sources, McLane confirmed Peter King's report that the Eagles have indeed been offered a first-rounder for Kolb. Seattle's interest in Kolb is nothing new, so it's not difficult to read tea leaves and suspect the Seahawks are the most interested team in the league. Just keep in mind that no players can be traded until there's a Collective Bargaining Agreement. Related: SeahawksSource: Jeff McLane on Twitter

Comcast SportsNet Bay Area's Matt Maiocco considers Kevin Kolb "unlikely" to ultimately land with the 49ers.

Maiocco is the best 49ers beat writer in the country, so he's trustworthy here. The Niners have always seemed more likely to draft a mid- to late-round quarterback and re-sign Alex Smith or add another veteran, so we can't say it's a big surprise. They aren't giving up the No. 7 overall pick for Kolb. The Eagles are known to want a first-round pick and perhaps more. Related: 49ersSource: Comcast Sports Bay Area

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier is not trying to be cagey about his team’s desperate need for help at quarterback.

“I can’t imagine a scenario where we wouldn’t add a quarterback [in the draft] at some point,†Frazier said Tuesday, adding that it would “ideally†come in the first two rounds. “[The idea] would be to get a young guy that could say, ‘OK, we’re going to ride with this guy. He’s our [Joe] Flacco, he’s our [Mark] Sanchez, he’s our Matt Ryan.â€

But will a Flacco/Sanchez/Ryan be available? It may not matter.

After listening to Frazier speak twice in New Orleans, Tom Pelissero of espn1500.com is convinced Frazier wants a quarterback in round one of the draft.

“He raised the possibility of moving up from No. 12,†Pelissero writes.

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune notes that Frazier would ideally like to draft a quarterback and have him step right in as a starter. Then again, he could also make a trade.

“You’d have to consider a guy like Kevin [Kolb] if he becomes available,†Frazier said.

Well, he’s very available. And it may not even cost the Vikings a 2011 draft pick to get him.

The Eagles have made it clear over the last few days they are ready to trade Kevin Kolb. A prolonged work stoppage won’t necessarily change that plan.

Eagles coach Andy Reid indicated at the owners meetings on Tuesday that he wouldn’t rule out trading Kevin Kolb after the draft. The Eagles wouldn’t be able to get a 2011 draft pick in that scenario, but they may not have a choice if the league isn’t open for business again before late April.

Eagles president Joe Banner echoed the sentiments to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He said the Eagles could look for a package including a player and future picks if a Kolb deal was made after the draft.

Banner added that there was a more “aggressive market†for Kolb this year than the one for Donovan McNabb last year. (And if you don’t think there is still chatter going on during a lockout, well, you’re crazy.)

Banner indicated that the teams interested are the same “teams people are guessing [they might be].â€

There is reportedly a first-round pick already on the table for Kolb. We’ve been guessing Seattle at the front of the line. The Browns are possible. Other NFC West teams could be interested, but it’s unlikely the Cardinals or 49ers would offer this year’s first-round pick.

At this point, it would be a major upset if Kolb wound up back in Philly.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Philly.com's Sheil Kapadia is "convinced" the Eagles will deal Kevin Kolb even if they have to settle for 2012 draft picks.

The Eagles have a history of trading for future picks, and it's clear that Kolb will be a hot item once trading is allowed. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll both admitted Tuesday that their teams have discussed the possibility of dealing for Kolb. Mar. 22 - 2:28 pm et

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News

While Eagles president Joe Banner would not confirm the offer, he did say that there was a "more aggressive market" for the 26-year-old Kolb than there was for Donovan McNabb. The Eagles dealt McNabb to Washington last April for an early second-round pick and a 2011 fourth-round selection.

"You can figure if there's a quarterback that a number of teams are interested in, you're going to end up with some meaningful compensation," Banner said Monday during a break in the NFL owners' meetings at a New Orleans hotel. "You can kind of figure out what that means and speculate from there. That's the situation we're in."

A Kolb trade is pure speculation. The lockout and the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement have shut down free agency and any other player movement for the time being. But that hasn't stopped quarterback-needy teams - there could be as many as a dozen - from making pitches to the Eagles.

And who might those teams be?

"They are the teams people are guessing [they might be]," Banner said.

Three NFL West teams - the Seahawks, Cardinals and 49ers - have been popular guesses along with the Titans, Vikings and Browns. Last year, Seattle and Cleveland reportedly made offers for Kolb. Banner said teams that were interested a year ago "remain interested."

"But the pool of teams interested in him is much bigger this year, by the dynamic of how many teams need a quarterback and how few other options there are to get one," he added. "There were a group of teams that last year tried to get by with OK quarterback situations and it didn't work out very well at all - all the West Coast teams, the Carolinas, the Miamis."

The list of potential free-agent quarterbacks is thin (led by the 31-year-old Carson Palmer), as is the list of other trade-worthy quarterbacks. Also, the draft class is not considered a strong one, and selecting a quarterback in the first round is a 50-50 proposition.

I really hope this CBA gets done before the draft so we can offload Kolb (it's imminent at this point whether I like it or not) and get some draft picks.

Actually I'd much rather get a cornerback through free agency and grab an offensive lineman in the first, but if we end up with Prince, you won't see me complain. :D

The Eagles are now seeking "at least a first-round pick and a second pick somewhere in the first three or four rounds" for Kevin Kolb, according to CSN Philly.

"Andy [Reid] spent all those years in Green Bay with Holmgren," said CSN's source. "And they groomed all those young quarterbacks (Aaron Brooks, Mark Brunell, Ty Detmer, Matt Hasselbeck) and traded them for picks that helped really build that franchise, so he knows the value of making this kind of deal." The most likely scenario is that trades won't be allowed before this year's draft, so the Eagles can take advantage of any team that loses out on a prime prospect.

Pro Football Weekly's insiders in the desert would be surprised if the Cardinals were willing to actually give up the fifth overall pick in the draft in exchange for Eagles QB Kevin Kolb — which is what PFW is hearing it reportedly would take to land him. The Cardinals are reportedly the top suitor to acquire Kolb. According to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, the Eagles already have a firm offer for a first-round pick. It's highly unlikely the Cardinals would actually deal a top five draft pick for Kolb, especially when they have pressing issues on defense and Texas A&M LB Von Miller and LSU CB Patrick Peterson could very well be available at No. 5. It's more likely the Cardinals would deal 2012 picks in a deal for Kolb, something the Eagles reportedly would accept.

This may be a little bit off topic, but am I the only one that thinks if Kevin Kolb is traded that it's almost a lock that the Eagles will draft Tyrod Taylor to develop behind Michael Vick?

It's a possibility, but definitely not a lock. Actually I'd call it a remote possibility because Andy Reid really likes Mike Kafka.

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Bengals have "floated the idea" of trading for Kevin Kolb around club headquarters.

"Make no mistake about it," said Schefter. "The Bengals know they need to move on without Carson Palmer." Schefter also indicates that Cincinnati may strongly consider drafting a quarterback at No. 4 overall. No trades will happen before or during the draft, so the Bengals would have to come up with an impressive package of 2012 picks to acquire Kolb. That's not something they'll be able to count on during the proceedings of April 28-30. Apr 4, 4:07 PM

The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy "can't see" the Bengals executing a trade for Kevin Kolb.

Reedy confirms ESPN's report that the idea has "floated" around Bengals headquarters, mostly because Kolb fits Jay Gruden's new West Coast offense and Kolb's old QBs coach, James Urban, now coaches receivers in Cincinnati. No pre-draft free agency immediately makes the idea more unlikely, however, and the Bengals would absolutely have to fork over a 2012 first-rounder. Related: BengalsSource: Cincinnati Enquirer

In response to MOTMs quote. I am sure most or all teams who have a big need at QB have at least "floated" the idea. This story may evolve down the road, but right now, it isn't much more than the Bengals doing their jobs.

NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell believes Kevin Kolb must be "manipulated by the system" with a strong running game to succeed long-term as a starter.

Cosell points to Matt Hasselbeck as a similar quarterback, struggling without Shaun Alexander around to keep defenses honest. Kolb's poor pocket presence in limited action lends credence to Cosell's analysis. The Seahawks and Cardinals, Kolb's most ardent suitors according to reports, struggled mightily on the ground last year. Both teams need major upgrades on the offensive line. After running Kevin Kolb's metrics for 2010, ESPN's "Football Scientist" K.C. Joyner believes Michael Vick's backup isn't worth a first-round pick.

NFL Network's Michael Lombardi has also posited that Kolb isn't worth the hefty price tag. "He's making bad decisions at a very high rate," writes Joyner, pointing out that Andy Reid's offense is not of the high-risk variety. Kolb has also struggled to read blitzes. As long as there are at least a half-dozen desperate teams, though, one of them is likely to pay the going rate. Source: ESPN.com

Hes not worth a first rounder. I said it before.
