49ers expected to upgrade at receiver

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

The 49ers are expected to upgrade the wide receiver corps as a top offseason priority.

In one of the most damning football stats we've seen, Alex Smith completed 28-of-37 passes for 444 yards and a 151.2 rating to tight ends and backs in the playoffs versus 8-of-29 for 51 yards and a 51.1 rating to receivers. Even though he regressed in January, Michael Crabtree's job is safe. The 49ers need a play-making upgrade on the other side. Incumbent No. 2 receiver Josh Morgan is a free agent. The Niners should seriously make a move for Justin Blackmon. If they have to pay something like the Falcons did, then forget it and go for Alshon or Floyd instead.

Give Alex Smith another year with a great WR as a threat, pick up a slot WR in FA, (May I suggest taking Legedu Nanee off our hands :troll:), and see what he can do with that.

Just as long as they keep their filthy 49er mits off of Dwayne Bowe, who is a free agent this offseason. There are quite a few quality FA WRs out there. I'm sure they'll stay away from DeSean Jackson, at least I hope so. I like that the 49ers are for real right now. I don't want to see them turn into some sort of freak show overnight.

Some other names out there are Reggie Wayne, Robert Meachem, Vincent Jackson, Wes Welker (unless he was signed to an extension,) Marques Colston, Steve Johnson, Mario Manningham, and Mike Wallace... That's pretty much it for the big wigs, but that's a lot of talent floating around out there.

Assuming that the Steelers take Wallace off of the board, and Billy boy locks up Wes, there are still some good options out there. So it looks like they won't even need to look Bowe's way. :yep:

Just don't draft a glamour boy in the first round and they'll be fine. Re-Sign Morgan, he's great when healthy, and grab a stud coming out in FA, like Colston or Vincent Jackson and they should be set.

They might go after a guy like Brian Quick in the draft. Heard a lot of good things about him last week and he apparently impressed at the Senior Bowl. He played some basketball and is 6'3" 222lbs. He has some really long arms, he's not afraid to lay a hit on a guy in blocking, great at running slant routes, and is good at both YAC and deep passes.

Per Rotoworld.com:

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco suspects the 49ers would have interest in free agent DeSean Jackson if he came with a "short-term, low-risk contract."

Jackson was born in Los Angeles and went to Cal, so it's natural to connect him to the 49ers and Raiders. Maiocco believes coach Jim Harbaugh would look beyond Jackson's reputation, but concedes that the free agent would only be an option if he faces a "soft market" due to character concerns. Jackson may not even reach the market, as the Eagles have the franchise tag as an option. Feb 3 - 11:59 AM

There are tons of quality FA receivers. A guy like Plaxico Burress would pose a problem for us. Somebody who could catch a jump ball, be another big red zone target, and make athletic plays on throws that aren't thrown with great accuracy. Someone like that could definitely boost Smith's confidence.

Fuck off DJack. We don't need a diva like that on the team. There are some good options out there like BisforBowe mentioned. I'd prefer it if we went after an established WR, who already has some experience in the league, instead of looking at an early draft pick in this instance.

Wallace, Welker and Mario will probably be locked up by their respective teams. Not a fan of Colston and his stone hands, and Robert Meachem is made to look better than he really is by Brees. Vincent would be a good pickup, while Wayne is probably on his last legs. Bowe would be awesome...he fits into our offense perfectly :D
