Is this part of the change Cam wanted?

Can't imagine that this is the "change" that Newton was specifically talking about considering he was more than likely talking about the offensive coordinator. Interesting though. Marty has been over-paying guys for a few years now, so the surprise isn't that he was relieved, but rather the fact of when it has now happened.

From what I've read, most aren't saying "wow" because of the firing itself, but because of the timing.

About fucking time.

That said, the problem this year rests with the play-calling. Hurney should have been canned a long time prior, but the 1-5 start is not all on him, or even mostly on him.

Hurney is a terrible GM... should have been gone already. The timing is still weird though, but hopefully gives the new guy some time to organize and prepare for next year.

The Panthers have hired former longtime GM Ernie Accorsi as a consultant for their impending general manager search.

They're looking to replace Marty Hurney, who was fired on October 22. Accorsi will immediately begin assisting owner Jerry Richardson by recommending to him GM candidates. Accorsi helped Falcons owner Arthur Blank hire Thomas Dimitriff, so there is some historical evidence that Richardson picked the right guy to lead the search.

Citing discussion "in league circles," Profootballtalk.com reports that the Panthers are believed to be leaning toward hiring Giants senior pro personnel analyst Dave Gettleman to fill their GM vacancy.

They'd apparently be picking Gettleman over more ballyhooed Giants exec Marc Ross. Gettleman has spent the past 15 seasons with the G-Men, working under Panthers GM-search-consultant Ernie Accorsi early in his career. Per PFT, other likely GM hirings according to buzz in league circles are Steve Keim (Cardinals), Tom Gamble (Jets), Dave Caldwell (Jaguars), and John Dorsey (Chiefs).

Montreal Alouettes GM Jim Popp is expected to interview for the Panthers' general manager vacancy.

Owner Jerry Richardson has shown a tendency toward hiring people from the Carolinas, and Popp has local ties. The long-time CFL executive has an impressive track record, with four Grey Cup titles. Over 19 years, each of his teams has made the playoffs. Popp is one of five or six candidates for the position in Carolina.

Panthers hired Giants senior pro personnel analyst Dave Gettleman for their general manager position.

Gettleman beat out fellow Giants personnel man Marc Ross and Panthers interim GM Brandon Beane, among others, for the job. He spent the past 15 years with the Giants, and has been in the league since 1986. Already 61, it's possible the Panthers hired Gettleman with the intention of having him groom Beane, whom they remain high on. Regardless of its parameters, Carolina's new front-office setup should be a vast improvement on the final few years of Marty Hurney's reign as GM.

Gettleman has basically said to not expect any high-priced free agents, and that the Panthers would be going for the draft to get an influx of talent.

Obviously, he is not to blame in the slightest for the cap situation, I hope the fanbase knows that as well. If Hurney's idiotic decisions means that Cam doesn't get talent around him for the next five years, I am never going to forgive him.

New Panthers GM Dave Gettleman had "no input" in owner Jerry Richardson's decision to retain head coach Ron Rivera, and Gettleman and Rivera hadn't even met until last week.

Rivera attended Gettleman's introductory press conference Tuesday, but only spoke for "about a minute" before being "shuffled out of the room." It's fair to wonder if there might be tension between Gettleman and Rivera because of the awkward situation. Most GMs get to pick their coaches. "I don't have a list of coaches in my back pocket," Gettleman said. "I have no interest in that."

To SteVo's article:

CHARLOTTE – Dave Gettleman didn't know Panthers head coach Ron Rivera before joining the organization as general manager, but Gettleman does know first-hand how a similar situation played out.

A few days before Gettleman was hired last week, Panthers Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson decided to retain Rivera for next season rather than leaving the decision to his new general manager.

Gettleman saw how a similar course of action turned out when he was director of pro personnel for the New York Giants in 2007. When general manager Ernie Accorsi retired and Jerry Reese took over the post, the team decided to retain Tom Coughlin as head coach.

"Now if you remember, Tom was under incredible heat," Gettleman said. "We had gone to the playoffs in '05 – when you guys came up there and just kicked our fanny – and then in '06 we go 8-8 and struggled to get into the playoffs."

The next season, Coughlin and the Giants won the Super Bowl.

"This is the same situation," Gettleman said. "My responsibility is to make everybody better."

Rivera was under heat when the Panthers relieved longtime general manager Marty Hurney of his duties following a 1-5 start last season. The team continued to struggle and fell out of playoff contention at 2-8 but responded with a 5-1 finish to end up 7-9, a one-game improvement over Rivera's first season.

Six days after a season-ending victory at New Orleans and four days before Gettleman was hired, Rivera was granted another season by Richardson.

"Mr. Richardson was very forthright and direct, and we had a great meeting. Obviously, it turned out the way I was hoping," Rivera said.

Rivera added that he was confident about getting another chance "because of the way we finished and the way the guys played down the stretch. I think the guys really did a great job for us. They played hard."

That's certainly something that Gettleman took note of and one of the reasons he's confident about his pairing with Rivera.

"The only background I had with Ron was watching him on TV like most other people," Gettleman said. "But it's a great statement to Ron and the coaching staff that the team played as hard as it did for him at the end of the year. Winning five out of the last six, that's a heck of a statement."

Richardson, in introducing Gettleman at a press conference Tuesday, said, "I think his experience will benefit not only the organization, but it will also be terrific for Ron during this time in his career."

Gettleman and Rivera's first order of business is filling out the coaching staff, headlined by the search for an offensive coordinator after Rob Chudzinski took the head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns.

Rivera said the Panthers want to hire someone who can mesh well with how the offense has utilized quarterback Cam Newton's unique skill set the last two seasons.

Gettleman elaborated.

"We're looking for someone that presents us with a balanced offense and to protect the quarterback," he said. "We're not completely done with the search, but we are in the process of getting into it, and we'd like to come to a conclusion as quickly as possible."

At the same time, Gettleman and Rivera are making preparations for Senior Bowl practice next week, the unofficial kickoff of "draft season" in the NFL. They should be able to spend plenty of time together there, though Rivera already has a first impression that's similarly positive to Gettleman's impression of him.

"When he and I have met, he's been very honest, very upfront and very direct," Rivera said of Gettleman. "I really do appreciate that. He's been great."

I'm really liking the way this turned out. The Giants are a team that I would like to imitate in terms of the depth on that team. The Panthers have a very good starting lineup, we have had one for a long time.

The reality of the NFL season, however, is that the 22 guys that start the season will never finish it, and overpaying for even quality starters so that you have no depth will almost never work out in the end- and this was Hurney's philosophy to a t. It is going to hurt, and hut badly, the first couple years, possibly even the first four years, of Gettleman's tenure. I'm not saying the Panthers won't be a threat until 2016, but the cap situation that Hurney has left is absolutely terrible.

I don't think Rivera is the problem in Carolina. Going to be interesting to see who the new OC is there and how he schemes to make Cam Newton better.

The Panthers are projected to be roughly $16 million over the salary cap as the offseason gets underway.

As ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas -- a former Carolina beat writer -- notes, the Panthers will need to "trim on both sides of the ball." Although he's still the Panthers' top cover corner, LCB Chris Gamble is expected to be among Carolina's cap casualties because cutting him would save $7 million. Owed $2.5M in salary and a roster bonus, DT Ron Edwards will be another easy cut.
