It's a shame Terrell Davis hasn't been inducted yet. He did everything a RB could outside of career numbers

Jesus, what a list. This is why I would NEVER be on the selection committee. Nice to see 3 Dolphins on the first year list...all from a bygone day when our defense scared people.

Anyway, I tried to narrow the list down by first going through and bolding the guys I thought have earned a spot, and then going from there. Once I got to 15, I realized there was no point in pursuing it further. I just can't do it.

As long as Marvin Harrison gets in first ballot, I don't care. My favorite receiver of all time.

I was able to get it down to 20 pretty easy, from there it's a bit of a crap shoot.

Walter Jones

Steve Sabol

Nate Newton

Marvin Harrison

Terrell Davis

aside of last more than four years you mean?

That's all you need if you're the best playoff performer at the position, have an MVP title, a 2000 yard season, and many moments that stay in football lore. Unlike a Dave Krieg who played forfuckingever but perhaps the most memorable thing about his career was getting sacked by Derrick Thomas seven times.

T.D. will most likely never make it because of the injuries. He had 4 great seasons.

This also kinda reminds me of Sterling Sharpe, who was a no-doubter when I watched him when I was younger, if he didn't hit the injury bug himself.

I wouldn't be averse to Terrell making it.

The real problem is, every year brings new players who had that kind of impact and also had longer years. Terrell is going to have to go in on a year when the pickings are slim. Harrison, Jones, Brooks and Strahan all had a similar impact. But they had the longevity and records to go with it.

I still say Sterling Sharpe should make it. One of the greatest to ever play. Maybe I am a hypocrite, but I would be hesitant on TD -- even though I love the guy.

longevity alone certainly doesn't get you in, but neither does talent alone, you've gotta have both, there are plenty of other players in the same position, two that immediately come to mind are Bo Jackson and Sean Taylor, you never hear them in the HOF conversation

but really the problem is the number of players that do have the ability and performance and also lasted a decade or more, there are just too many people above TD IMO

How many years until Andre Reed is off the ballot? I'm getting sick of this every year.

But where is that happy medium? What is the benchmark for talent... for longevity? How do you define that?

Come on now, there is a lot Dave Krieg is remembered for, a shit ton of fumbles.

very subjectively, to be blunt, and I suppose that's where reasonable minds disagree, but I think we'd all agree that there's a sliding scale, more of one can mean less of the other, but I'm not willing to slide either side of the balance below a certain point, to me the low end on longevity is Earl Campbell, who only played for 8 years, but in that time he had five 1300 yard seasons (topping out at 1934) and totaled 9407 rushing yards, compare that to Davis, who officially played 7 seasons amassing 7607 yards and only three seasons over 1200 yards

also, I'm not sure 'talent' is the best word to use, even though I'm the one who came up with it, I think 'production' is a much better way of putting the criteria, because a lot of players have all the talent you could ask for but for a variety of reasons it doesn't translate into production, those players obviously don't get a sniff of the Hall

Obviously Terrell Davis isn't Orlandis Gary, but the fact that TD played in Shanny's offense probably hurts him too.

I feel like Brooks, Jones, and Strahan are locks, but after that it's anybody's guess.

I'd like to see Jacoby get in too, the fact that only one of the Hogs is in the Hall is a crime

It's a good o-line class that's for sure! I also think Will Shields is very deserving to be enshrined this year.
