I voted for Paul McCartney in the first matchup, but it was honestly a tough choice for me.

 

Mikael Akerfeldt actually has a nice voice (you were right, Vincenzo) when he's not growling like a wild beast, but he's no Waters.

 

Chop Suey is like the only SOAD song I really like and know, and it's not really because of the vocals.

 

Brad Delp and Boston easily over Moreno and The Deftones. The Deftones just strike me as an alternative 90s band that I have listened to from that era. Nothing special. I'd rather listen to STP from the 90s with Scott Weiland.

My thoughts run mostly in line with this, Blue. My personal favorite from this group is Buckley. Dude never misses a note and can sing anything. On top of this, his writing ability and his ability to make any song his own (regardless of who wrote it) is pretty impressive.

 

Serj's voice is very limited but rather unique sounding, plus he was a part of one of the most popular rock band of the early part of last decade (when there was kind of a derth of popular and halfway decent rock acts out there.) So I think this one could be close.

 

I would pick Buckley all day every day. Here let me pitch a song for him.

Mikael Akerfeldt is one of the greats. Easily one of the best vocalists and songwriters in the metal world.

Also, thank god Serj Tankian won't win in this round. One of the most annoying voices I think I've ever heard.

Oh come on. Just because a band or artist is viewed as great doesn't mean they're more talented at specific things like vocals, or whichever instrument they play, than an artist who's less popular. For instance, Bob Dylan is a pretty bad singer. Synester Gates was really fucking sloppy up until a few years ago, to the point that he couldn't even replicate what he recorded live (he's since improved, and quite dramatically, I assume thanks to his focus on jazz). And then you have artists like Serj, whose voice is either loved or hated. To me, he grates on my eardrums.

 

What's the point of discussing this, if everything I say is going to be viewed as elitist? Mikael Akerfeldt is one of the most amazing musicians in the world. I feel he's owed as much respect as anyone, including Roger Waters.

Roger Waters has written some of the most ground breaking and highest selling albums of the last 50 years. The guy wrote an opera in French and won all kinds of awards. Roger Waters is an absolute genius. Put down the crack pipe.
