Vin+ 3,121 Posted October 1, 2015 This guy. (Damn it teams, stop trading with the Pats.) Saints acquired TE Michael Hoomanawanui from the Patriots in exchange for DL Akiem Hicks. Hoomanawanui was inactive last week after falling behind Michael Williams as the blocking complement to Rob Gronkowski and Scott Chandler. With Ben Watson struggling, he'll help upgrade the Saints tight end situation. Hoomanawanui could replace Watson in base sets.

Vin+ 3,121 Posted February 17, 2016 Saints GM Mickey Loomis said he wants to extend Drew Brees' contract. Loomis hasn't opened talks with Brees or his agent yet, so no deal is imminent. Lowering Brees' cap number by giving him an extension seems like a no-brainer. As it stands for 2016, Brees counts $30 million against the Saints' cap. oochymp 2,393 Posted February 17, 2016 Thirty million against the cap. do you remember when McNair was gonna be a $50M cap one year? and that was with a much lower salary cap
ATL_Predator+ 1,196 Posted February 17, 2016 Saints suck. Drew Brees is not getting any better...what a waste, especially when that defense and overall team is in shambles.
BigBen07 285 Posted February 17, 2016 Saints just may have confined themselves to Shitsville for the forseeable future.
Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted February 17, 2016 do you remember when McNair was gonna be a $50M cap one year? and that was with a much lower salary cap I don't actually. That's almost unbelievable to me. Just sounds incredibly irresponsible by a front office. Then again, I don't know the Titans cap situation at the time outside of McNair , it could have been genius to get a big chunk like that out of the way -- again, depending on how the rest of the salaries fell. I do know that in this case, he Saints are a little daft.... As they have been digging this hole for years now.
SteVo+ 3,702 Posted February 17, 2016 (edited) Whoever the Titans GM was at the time (forget his name) had a history of backloading contracts to horrifying extent, IIRC. Edited February 17, 2016 by SteVo
BigBen07 285 Posted February 17, 2016 IIRC it was Floyd Reese.
Bucman 891 Posted February 18, 2016 They definitely need to either cut him or redo that deal or lower that absurd cap #.
oochymp 2,393 Posted February 18, 2016 (edited) Whoever the Titans GM was at the time (forget his name) had a history of backloading contracts to horrifying extent, IIRC. IIRC it was Floyd Reese. both correct Reese gave ridiculously backloaded contracts with figures that everyone knew the player would never see, I have no clue what the theory behind it was. My best guess is the agents convinced him it was worth it and let them brag about getting players huge deals regardless of the actual money available, or agents (or players) were idiots and didn't realize that the total value of the contract was artificially inflated. Most of the time the players would restructure before it became an issue, but to say that McNair's contract blew up in his face is an understatement. He ended up getting cut after he was kicked out of the team's facility during the offseason (and kicked out by a trainer, higher ups didn't even have the balls to do it themselves) there were a while there when it was really tough to be a Titans fan. I suspect something similar is going on here, they put a huge number at the end of Brees' deal to inflate the contract numbers knowing he'd never actually see it and now they have to deal with it. EDIT: also, a quick clarification, I looked into it a little bit and I was mistaken, McNair would have been a $23.46M cap hit, but he was due a $50M bonus, which would have been spread over the next three years for cap purposes, but since the cap at the time was $94.5M that would represent almost a quarter of the salary cap, the equivalent of a player this year counting $38.48M against the cap based on the $155M reported cap.
