NFL Roster Cuts '13

Every season Chargers fans try to find themselves the next Wes Welker in preseason, its hilarious seeing every short, fast, white guy get crowned the next Wes that got away.

Per Rotoworld:

Texans waived RB Ray Graham, QB Stephen McGee, LB Elliot Coffey, FB Zach Boren, OG Bryan Collins, OT Nick Mondek, DE Earl Okine, CB Travis Howard, P Andrew Shapiro, LB Ja'Gared Davis, and TE Adam Schiltz.

Graham was one of the three big-name undrafted free agent backs -- along with Cierre Wood and Dennis Johnson -- to sign on with the Texans. He's the first to be shown the door. McGee was a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2009.

No real shockers here. Mondek could be a possible developmental player on the practice squad, and Shapiro looked impressive in preseason. If your team needs a punter, Shapiro looks legit.

Lions waived K Havard Rugland and CB De'Quan Menzie.

Rugland proved to me more than a mere YouTube sensation. "Kickalicious" showed better than expected leg strength and accuracy at camp, but was never going to beat out David Akers for the placekicking job. Menzie was a fifth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2012 that the Lions claimed off waivers back in May.

Bengals waived OG Otis Hudson and T Jason Weaver.

Hudson has been on the Bengals' roster bubble ever since they drafted him in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. He's spent time on the practice squad, but never appeared in an NFL game. Andre Smith (knee) is expected to be fine for Week 1.

Aug 27 - 11:00 AM

Chiefs waived WR Jamar Newsome.

Newsome appeared in six games for the Chiefs last year, catching five balls for 73 yards. His roster spot was needed for an extra tight end thanks to Tony Moeaki's shoulder injury.

Evan Landi - TE - Free Agent

Patriots waived TE Evan Landi.

Landi, an undrafted rookie out of South Florida, was just a camp body. Zach Sudfeld, Daniel Fells, Michael Hoomanawanui and Jake Ballard are locked in as the Pats' top-four tight ends until Rob Gronkowski (back) returns.

The San Francisco 49ers have gotten their roster down to under the 75-man limit with the help of numerous injured players. The team waived/injured defensive tackles Lawrence Okoye and Lamar Divens. They also placed DT Cornellius Carradine, DT Quinton Dial, RB Marcus Lattimore, OT Luke Marquardt and CB Eric Wright on the Reserve/NFI list. Finally, they placed WRs Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham on the Reserve/NFI and moved Chris Culliver to the Injured Reserve list.

By doing all of this the 9ers stand at 74 players.

Bucs waived TE Mike A. Shanahan, WR Terriun Crump, WR Chris Denton, G Adam Smith, CB Branden Smith, and TE Zach Miller.

Shanahan, a former wide receiver at Pitt, was cut by the Jets on Monday and Bucs on Tuesday. Not a great week. Miller is the former Jaguars tight end who was once publicly compared by ex-GM Gene Smith to Dallas Clark.

Dolphins waived WR Jeff Fuller, LB David Hinds, DE Emeka Onyenekwu, WR Andrell Smith and LB Nathan Williams.

Fuller has now failed to latch on in back-to-back camps despite the presence of his college quarterback and coach. He has NFL size at 6-foot-4, 223 pounds, but can't separate from professional defensive backs.

Rams waived LB Jabara Williams.

A 2011 seventh-round pick, Williams has made just seven career appearances, zero of which came in 2012. The fact that he couldn't even make it to final cuts bodes poorly for his future.

Dolphins released OG Lance Louis.

27-year-old Louis was slow to recover from his 2012 ACL tear, falling behind undrafted rookie Josh Samuda at one point in the battle to start at right guard. Another gem from Jeff Ireland's desperation offseason spending spree, Louis cost the Dolphins $125,000 without even playing in a single game.

We didn't even cut anyone further, just put 8 guys on PUP or IR. Saw the Pats picked up one of our cut players, DT Gilbert Pena... Nice move, IMO.

The Browns also waived linebacker Kendrick Adams, offensive lineman Dominic Alford, wide receiver Dominique Croom, defensive lineman Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, fullback Owen Marecic, offensive lineman Ryan Miller and tight end Travis Tannahill. In addition, the team placed running back Montario Hardesty on injured reserve and offensive lineman Chris Faulk on reserve/non-football injury.

RIP in peace Marecic. You were the worst.

Patriots waived CB Ras-I Dowling.

The No. 33 overall pick, Dowling was considered on the bubble going into camp, and didn't show enough to keep his roster spot. It's rare for a team to pull the plug on such a high draft pick after only two years, but Dowling left the Pats little choice. Injury prone in college, Dowling has lived up to his reputation in the pros, appearing in just nine of a possible 32 games. His play has been decidedly ordinary in the 176 snaps he's managed to take the field for. Dowling's draft pedigree could earn him a look on waivers, but it's possible he's already viewed as damaged goods.

Wow Dowling is always injured, I was wondering if he was even playing this preseason. Shame as he was a pretty good player, especially in college.

49ers will release QB Seneca Wallace.

The Niners did Wallace a solid by not playing him in the preseason finale and risking injury. So he'll have a chance to catch on elsewhere, most likely after Week 1. San Francisco already waived Scott Tolzien and will enter the season with Colt McCoy and rookie B.J. Daniels behind starter Colin Kaepernick.

Jaguars waived or released CB Marcus Trufant, WR Jeremy Ebert, DE Pannel Egboh, RB Jonathan Grimes, LB Brandon Marshall, WR Charly Martin, OT Pat McQuistan, OG Drew Nowak, CB Kevin Rutland, DT D’Anthony Smith, LB Julian Stanford, WR Toney Clemons, DE Ryan Davis, DT T.J. Barnes, OT R.J. Dill, TE Ryan Otten, WR Tobais Palmer, QB Matt Scott, S Steven Terrell and LB Mike Zimmer.

The Jags didn't mess around, paring the roster down to 54 in one fell swoop. They'll get to 53 by stashing Justin Blackmon on the reserve/suspended list. Scott's release means Ricky Stanzi slots in as the No. 3 quarterback. Trufant was reuniting with his old defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, but didn't show enough in camp coming off a dismal 2012.

Nothing overly surprising. Kinda sad to see D'Anthony go even though he was always hurt. Scott's kinda surprising, though it's not a good thing if you're get cut for a guy that was signed just a few days ago.

Seahawks released FB Michael Robinson.

I'm not happy about it, but I understand the decision. He's older, he's making big bank for an FB (2.5m a year) and he's been sick for weeks and looks to be sick for weeks more. We needed the roster spot and the cap space, and Spencer Ware looks like a good young replacement. sucks to lose him, but as they say NFL is a business. Hope he finds a new home. Preferably in the AFC.

I kinda liked TJ Barnes coming out of school... Our Dline is looking pretty sick so there isn't a spot for him, but did he really look that bad? I mean.. He was an UDFA, so I wasn't expecting epicness. lol

If the Texans don't manage to land Dennis Johnson on the practice squad, I would absolutely love for them to have a Grimes reunion. He showed a lot of promise last season in their offense.

Chargers released OT Max Starks.

Starks was signed to a one-year, $2 million deal in May to solidify the blindside in San Diego, but instead wathced King Dunlap run circles around him in training camp. The Bolts are swallowing a $160,000 signing bonus, which shows just how far Starks' play has fallen. A 16-game starter for the Steelers last season, Starks should make himself part of the workout circuit, but is no longer a starting-caliber player

Fernando Velasco, Drake Nevis, and Dontay Moch are three very interesting roster cuts out there.

Running back Alex Green has officially been released.

Also being given a pink slip was tight end D.J Williams who never was able to establish himself during his three year tenure. The Packers drafted him out of Arkansas in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft. He had several opportunities but dropped several notable passes in limited playing time.

Linebacker Dezman Moses was also given his walking papers. Moses made the roster last year as an undrafted free agent. He finished 2012 with 27 tackles and four sacks.

The wide receiver group has taken the biggest hit so far today, with 2013 seventh round draft choices Charles Johnson and Kevin Dorsey among those being cut. Undrafted pass catchers Myles White and Tyrone Walker also were released.

Cornerback Loyce Means

OL Andrew Datko

OL Patrick Lewis

OL David Gerhardt

OL Kevin Hughes

S David Fulton

S Chaz Powell

OLB David Savage

FB Johnathan Amosa

I really like DJ Williams, but he never showed the skills he did at Arkansas as the sure-handed receiving threat.

Moses is a little bit of a surprising cut, to me... But I have to see the rest of them before I make judgments.

After 22 transactions, the Broncos have reached the league-mandated, 53-player limit with just five days remaining until their season kicks off against Baltimore.

Saturday, the team announced that running back Lance Ball, center/guard C.J. Davis, running back Jeremiah Johnson, center/guard Ryan Lilja and tight end Jake O'Connell were released as vested veterans.

Defensive end Jeremy Beal, center/guard Philip Blake, tackle Paul Cornick, defensive tackles Romney Fuga and Ben Garland, cornerback Aaron Hester, linebacker Damien Holmes, wide receiver Tavarres King, tackle Vinston Painter, safety Ross Rasner, wide receivers Gerell Robinson and Lamaar Thomas and defensive end John Youboty were all waived.

In addition, linebackers Stewart Bradley and Lerentee McCray and defensive end Quanterus Smith were placed on injured reserve.

:Bucs:

Bucs waived or released S Cody Grimm, DT Gary Gibson, WR Jordan Norwood, OG Roger Allen, S Sean Baker, CB Deveron Carr, OT Jace Daniels, LB Dom DeCicco, LS Andrew DePaola, WR David Douglas, LB Ka'lial Glaud, P Chas Henry, DT Lazarius Levingston, DT Matthew Masifilo, DT Andre Neblett, WR Chris Owusu, OT Mike Remmers, CB Mason Robinson and G/C Cody Wallace.

Grimm appeared in nine games last season, but hasn't made a start since 2011. Gibson entered camp as a candidate to replace NT Roy Miller, but played poorly. Norwood was signed just three days ago.

:Giants:

Giants waived or released DT Marvin Austin, DEs Adrian Tracy, Adewale Ojomo and Matt Broha, LB Kyle Bosworth, OLs Eric Herman, Stephen Goodin and Bryant Browning, CBs Terrence Frederick and Charles James, and WRs Kevin Hardy, Marcus Harris and Julian Talley.

The Giants attempted to trade Austin ahead of Saturday's deadline, but predictably found no takers. He's appeared in just eight games since being selected with the No. 52 overall pick in the 2011 draft. Herman was a seventh-round pick in April. Tracy, a 2010 sixth-rounder, appeared in all 16 games in 2012.

Giants released QB David Carr.

:panthers:

Panthers waived or released LB Jason Williams, WR Taulib Ikharo, OG Tori Mobley, DE Craig Roh, DT Casey Walker, D.J. Campbell and S Anderson Russell.

Campbell and Russell were both waived/injured. The No. 69 pick of the 2009 draft, Williams appeared in seven games between the Panthers and Eagles last season.

Panthers waived/injured WR David Gettis (hamstring).

the Panthers waived/injured Jimmy Clausen.

:Browns:

Browns waived or released LB James-Michael Johnson, OL Aaron Adams, DB Akeem Auguste, RB Jamaine Cook, DL Hall Davis, WR Tori Gurley, WR Naaman Roosevelt, DL Brian Sanford, and LB Justin Staples.

Johnson, the No. 120 overall pick in last year's draft, didn't fit in new DC Ray Horton's 3-4 scheme. He'll likely draw some interest as a two-down thumper. Gurley has made his rounds around the league the last two years.

Source: Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter

Browns released K Shayne Graham and K Brandon Bogotay.

Like a fantasy owners playing it smart ahead of Week 1, the Browns have left themselves with no kicker for now. Graham, who was just 11-of-18 from 41+ out last season, went 3-of-3 in the preseason.

:Saints:

Saints waived or released S Jim Leonhard, WR Preston Parker, FB Austin Johnson, WR Saalim Hakim, OG Elliott Mealer, TE Keavon Milton, TE Michael Higgins, OG Andrew Tiller, C Jeremiah Warren, LB Ray Shipman, LB Rufus Johnson, S Jerico Nelson, LB Baraka Atkins, OT Marcel Jones, CB Korey Lindsey and CB Jumal Rolle.

The fact that Leonhard couldn't crack a secondary that was one of the worst of all time last season bodes poorly for his future. Hakim has speed to burn, but didn't step up in Joe Morgan's absence. Parker hasn't caught a pass since 2011. Tiller was a sixth-round pick in April, as was Johnson.

:Falcons:

Falcons waived or released WR James Rodgers, LB Robert James, WR Darius Johnson, OL Jacques McClendon, FB Patrick DiMarco, WR Martel Moore, OG Phillipkeith Manley, CB Jordan Mabin, and DT Adam Replogle.

Rodgers is the less-talented brother of Jacquizz. James was a fifth-round pick in 2008 and a key special teams member. The rest were roster fillers.

:Cowboys:

Cowboys waived or released WR Danny Coale, OT Edawn Coughman, OT Demetress Bell, DB Xavier Brewer, DE Jerome Long, DE Jabari Fletcher, LB Caleb McSurdy, LB Cameron Lawrence, G/T Ray Dominguez, DE Jason Vega, CB Micah Pellerin, LB Brandon Magee and C Kevin Kowalski.

It's the second straight year the 2012 fifth-rounder Coale couldn't survive final cuts. A practice squader last season, he tore his ACL in November. Bell made it a little more than a month in Big D. McSurdy missed all of 2012 with a torn Achilles' tendon.

:Colts:

Colts waived or released QB Chandler Harnish, LB Daniel Adongo, S Larry Asante, C Thomas Austin, CB Marshay Green, DE Lawrence Guy, FB Robert Hughes, OT Ben Ijalana, TE Dominique Jones, WR Jeremy Kelley, DT Drake Nevis, CB Sheldon Price, WR Jabin Sambrano, WR Lanear Sampson, LB Monte Simmons, OT Bradley Sowell and NT Martin Tevaseu.

Harnish has never appeared in an NFL game. The No. 49 overall pick of the 2011 draft, Ijalana was waived/injured last summer, spending 2012 on injured reserve. He's shaping up as a massive bust. The No. 87 pick in 2011, Nevis has made just 14 career appearances. The Colts are purging former GM Bill Polian's mistakes.

Colts waived/injured LB Shawn Loiseau, OT Emmett Cleary and CB Daxton Swanson.

:Steelers:

Steelers waived or released NT Alameda Ta'amu, WR Reggie Dunn, OT Mike Golic, C Joe Madsen, OG Chris Hubbard, LB Terence Garvin, CB Devin Smith, WR Kashif Moore, RB Alvester Alexander, TE Nathan Overbay and OT Joe Long.

A 2012 fourth-rounder, Ta'amu didn't appear in a game last season, while his name only made the paper when he was arrested for DWI. Perhaps he'll be stashed on the practice squad, but the Steelers might be ready to move on.

Steelers waived CB Terry Hawthorne and WR Justin Brown. Steelers released P Brian Moorman.

Steelers waived or released S Ross Ventrone, LB Brian Rolle, TE Jamie McCoy, CB Josh Victorian, DE Brian Arnfelt and LB Alan Baxter.

Steelers waived RB Jonathan Dwyer.

:Chiefs:

Chiefs waived or released DE Austen Lane, OG Rokevious Watkins, CB Kennard Cox, LB Orie Lemon, OT Steven Baker, WR Josh Bellamy, S Malcolm Bronson, S Greg Castillo, OL Tommie Draheim, LB Darin Drakeford, WR Frankie Hammond, CB Semaj Moody, FB Toben Opurum, OT Matt Reynolds, WR Rico Richardson and DE Ridge Wilson.

Lane was claimed off waivers from the Jags in June. Although a promising prospect, Watkins has let poor conditioning derail his career. Cox and Lemon are both special teamers.
