49ers Bench Colin Kaepernick

Recommended Posts

Am I supposed to be convinced that Colin Kaepernick will all-of-a-sudden be a good player again? I personally think Blaine Gabbert can win the QB job if SF doesn't draft somebody.

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday that quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be on the team's roster on April 1, when his $11.9 million base salary for 2016 becomes fully guaranteed.
Baalke made the announcement at the NFL's scouting combine in Indianapolis.
Baalke was later asked whether Kaepernick would be the Niners' starter or if he would have to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the job.
"I think the good thing is we've got two guys that have gone into games who've proven they can play," Baalke said, "and Colin's done some awful good things through his career, won some big games for the San Francisco 49ers and [we] expect him to come back.
"The main focus right now is health, getting him healthy. He's done a good job with his rehab. Talking to the medical staff, that seems to be going very well, and [we] just look forward to getting him back and getting him working with this coaching staff."
Kaepernick, 28, is recovering from three surgeries (left shoulder, right thumb, left knee).

The cynical part of me wonders if they'd be on the hook anyway based on the surgeries since the money is guaranteed for injury

Is Colin Kaepernick on his way out of San Francisco?

NFL Media's Rand Getlin reported Thursday Kaepernick's agents have requested permission from the San Francisco 49ers to seek a trade, per a source informed of the information.

The report comes just one day after Niners general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday he "absolutely" expects the quarterback to remain on the roster in 2016. Kaepernick's $11.9 million salary becomes guaranteed on April 1. Baalke indicated the team's plan is for Kaepernick to remain on the roster until then.

In Week 9, the Niners benched Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert -- he was eventually placed on injured reserve in November. He was listed on the team's Week 11 injury report as probable with a left shoulder injury. However, he incurred the injury Week 4, yet he started the next four contests.

49ers coach Chip Kelly said he has been "impressed" by Blaine Gabbert.

"He’s big," Kelly said. "He’s a 6-4, 245-pound guy that can really run. I thought the last part of the season he played really well. It’ll be intriguing to work with him, too." Gabbert showed surprising competence early in his starting run last season, but he struggled to make plays and took too many sacks down the stretch. Only 26, it is possible Kelly turns Gabbert's career around, but the first-round bust is who he is at this point. Even if the 49ers move on from Colin Kaepernick, Gabbert should be nothing more than a stopgap.

Mike Klis of 9 News Denver stated on Sirius NFL Radio that one "holdup" in trade negotiations between the Broncos and 49ers is that Denver wants Colin Kaepernick to accept a pay cut.

In other words, the Broncos want Kaepernick to sign off on a reduced contract before giving San Francisco compensation. Kaepernick's $11.9 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed on April 1, so he wouldn't have to accept any pay cut should he stay in the Bay Area. Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco, but at this stage it appears he'll have to take less money to play elsewhere.

apparently this year's money became guaranteed as of 4PM ET today (roughly 20 minutes ago) he could still agree to restructure in a trade, but now he has no motivation to do so

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Broncos have a trade in place for Colin Kaepernick.

The deal is expected to be for a mid-round pick. The Broncos and 49ers have agreed on compensation, but Kaepernick's contract remains a holdup. Denver wants Kaepernick to take a $5 million pay cut, and the sides reportedly aren't close on a restructure. Kaepernick should eventually end up in Denver, but it's likely going to take an incentives-based deal.

I'm honestly not sure I want this to happen. Changes how I feel about Denver TBH.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Broncos are willing to pay $7 million of Colin Kaepernick's salary for 2016 but the team wants San Francisco to pay the remaining $4.9 million.

That's probably not going to happen. Kaepernick has so far been reluctant to take a pay cut and the 49ers have no reason to pony up almost $5 million for their franchise quarterback to play elsewhere. Trade compensation—reportedly a mid-round draft pick—is a non-issue. Kaepernick has already met with Broncos GM John Elway twice this offseason. Mark Sanchez will begin the offseason program as Denver's starting quarterback unless the two sides can reach a compromise in the near future.

According to ESPN Broncos reporter Jeff Legwold, Denver will "have to make a move" with LT Ryan Clady if the team acquires Colin Kaepernick.

Even if Kaepernick takes a big pay cut to join the Broncos, something he's been unwilling to do, Denver will have to make some adjustments to get under the $155.27 million salary cap for 2016. Cutting Clady makes the most sense, thought that would leave the Broncos with $1.2 million in dead money. Punter Britton Colquitt ($4 million cap hit in 2016) could be another cap casualty while Chris Harris, Aqib Talib and Demaryius Thomas could also be asked to restructure their contracts. Denver has just $1.62 million in cap space right now, easily the lowest number in the league.

You may have to cut or restructure far superior players to accommodate Kaepernick? Why not just.... not acquire Kaepernick?

9 News Denver's Mike Klis reports the Broncos' salary-cap clearance resulting from the Ryan Clady trade will have "no impact" on the team's pursuit of Colin Kaepernick.

The Clady deal wiped $9.5 million off Denver's books. The Broncos no longer need Kaepernick to take a pay cut, but Klis reports cap room "had nothing to do" with Denver's pay-cut request. It was more a reflection of Kaepernick's recent on-field play. The Broncos don't view Kaepernick as a certain answer to their quarterback woes. If Denver wants a quarterback likelier to "win now," GM John Elway will get serious about Josh McCown. Kaepernick may be more of a long-term rehab project. Klis reports a Kap-to-Denver deal is "not dead, but it's not looking good."

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN's Mark Dominik believes a Colin Kaepernick-to-Denver deal is "done," and contingent only on the 49ers drafting a quarterback.
If Dominik's belief is correct, the trade would go down on draft day. A former NFL general manager, Dominik bases this belief on the fact that Kaepernick formally visited the Broncos' facility, and "you never let a player visit (another) club without (the) trade and contract already figured out." Dominik's theory makes sense, and he still has connections throughout the league. Unfortunately, we won't find out whether Dominik is right until April 28. Apr 13 - 10:08 PM

NFL.com's Mike Silver reports Blaine Gabbert is the "heavy favorite" over Colin Kaepernick to be the 49ers' Week 1 starter.

Silver recently visited 49ers headquarters and came away with this belief. Silver called San Francisco's quarterback battle "allegedly" a competition, and indicated a matured Gabbert has won over teammates. "He's loved in this locker room," Silver said. "He did a lot of good things last year and I'd be shocked if he's not the starter in the opener." Silver suggested Gabbert could become the 49ers' next Alex Smith as a player who "resurrects himself" after early-career failure. Kaepernick (various surgeries) only recently resumed practicing and looked like a shell-shocked player with shot confidence before his benching last year.

Colin Kaepernick finally admitted that his loss of weight has become an issue.

The 49ers haven't said how much Kaepernick weighs, but they admit he's not at his listed 225 pounds. And probably isn't close to it. Kap became a vegan last season, and his weight noticeably started to tumble. He has a plan to gain it back: "Eat food. And a lot of it." His fragile build is likely contributing to coach Chip Kelly not putting Kaepernick on the field. "To get the full Kap for what you need -- the potential that he has," Kelly said, "he needs to continue to just work on the physical aspect of things." Kelly has long been big on physical stature.

The 49ers have formally announced Colin Kaepernick as their Week 6 starter at quarterback.

Coach Chip Kelly only had one choice, and he made it. Kaepernick's play went off the rails before he was placed on injured reserve last season, but he's at least had success on an NFL field. The same cannot be said for Blaine Gabbert, who has been embarrassingly bad under center, offering zero threat as a passer and fancying himself a poor man's Alex Smith as a runner. In theory, Kap is a great fit for Kelly's offense, which was most successful in college employing dual-threat quarterbacks. Kelly has gotten away from his principles, however, and seemed increasingly overmatched as an NFL coach. Kap could fail just as badly as Gabbert, but the 49ers need to take the chance. Kap will be on the QB2 borderline for this week's visit to Buffalo to face the resurgent Bills.
