'Life coach' gives up on JaMarcus Russell

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

JaMarcus Russell's "life coach," John Lucas, has cut ties with the 2007 draft bust and asked him to leave Houston, according to Yahoo's Jason Cole.

Lucas, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1976 NBA draft and all-American tennis player, is renowned for helping athletes with addiction and personal problems. After initially working hard to get back to the NFL, Russell had lost motivation, forcing Lucas to bring in Charles Barkley as a mentor. Both men have now thrown up their hands in frustration with Russell's "deteriorating work habits." Perhaps most damning, Ravens president Ozzie Newsome, a fellow Alabama native, refused a request to meet with Russell in January. Said one source to Cole, "The title of your article should be, 'It's Over.'"

Alright Leaf, thanks for keeping the seat warm... but Russell is officially the biggest bust in NFL history now.

Looks like he needs to get a 'death' coach.

Davis: That won't work either.

This is a goddamn shame. I never liked the guy but I really hate to see a kid fuck up his life so badly. At least he has his millions to fall back on...for now.

I dunno... Them being able to tolerate him for this long is a small victory for Jamarcus. The rest of us gave up on him circa 2008

Prime reason why rookies shouldn't get huge deals with obscene amounts of guaranteed money.

Yeah, anyone that puts Russell over Leaf is a fool.

When the Chargers selected Leaf, they traded a three time Pro Bowler, two first round picks, and a second round pick to move up one spot in order to select him.

Leaf had worse stats and was hyped up WAY more than Russell.

Stats look about the same to me. I'm not gonna call a guy who's 5'6" a midget and a guy who is 5'7" a giant. The numbers are the same but there's more zeros on Russells paycheck which makes him a bigger bust.

Yea there is virtually no difference in the stats seeing as Leaf missed a year they actually played the same amount of years also. At least Leaf didn't manage to fuck his whole life up, its a shame to hear that anyone has gotten into the situation that they have messed up this badly honestly.

Did you miss the part about how the Chargers gave up a Pro-Bowler, two first round picks, and a second round pick to move up for him? That FAR outweighs the fact that Russell got paid more, which is a given considering what year Russell was drafted in.

Also, Russell had one mediocre/decent season while Leaf was shit all three years.

one other point in the debate, Leaf at least got better each year, granted it was only marginal and he still never approached decent, Russell got worse the more he played

Mike Phipps, was selected third overall in the 1970 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. While drafting that early is sort of the Browns' thing these days, Cleveland was a great football team when they drafted Phipps. They had a 26-15 record in the three seasons before Phipps became a starter, and they hadn't had a losing season since 1956.

However, the most important criteria in determining which is the biggest draft bust is the impact that each had on his team. Russell and Leaf have similar stories -- both were drafted by terrible franchises and did nothing more than continue their misery. Russell became the starting quarterback in 2008, after his Raiders posted a terrible 10-36 record in the three years before. The Chargers had a 21-27 record in the three seasons before Leaf took over. Phipps single-handedly sunk what up to that point had been a powerhouse franchise, leading the Browns to a 4-10 record in '74 and a 3-11 record in '75.

Even worse, fans had to endure Leaf and Russell for only two and three seasons, respectively. Phipps plagued Cleveland for seven seasons. So while Leaf and Russell were nothing more than short-lived hopes, Phipps was a one-man wrecking ball who single-handedly destroyed one of the league's most dominant franchises.
