Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted October 24, 2011 Jared Allen has 11.5 sacks through 7 games. If he can keep up that pace for the rest of the year, he is looking at 26 or 27 QB take downs, which would effectively crush Michael Strahan's record of 22.5 Allen has predominantly been a pass rush specialist for his career. He usually struggles against the run and finds it difficult to get off blocks if he isn't using one of his pass rush moves. But this year arguably the best of his career. If he is getting stood up on the line, he will jump up and bat down a pass.. And more frequently he is getting off his blocks to stuff a RB in the backfield. How much would you factor his teams 1 - 6 start into any chance he has of winning DPOTY? None? A lot? Would he need to break the record before winning such an award on a bad team? RazorStar 4,025 Posted October 24, 2011 Brian Robison really plays well off of him, and they work together very well. While Ray Edwards might have more talented than Robison, Allen and Robison seem to play better together.
Guest Phailadelphia Posted October 24, 2011 He usually starts strong (albeit maybe not THIS strong) and then falters in the second half of the season. I'm not sold on him pushing Strahan for the sack record yet.
SteVo+ 3,702 Posted October 25, 2011 I've been critical of his one-dimensional play for the last few seasons--and I'm not the only one on TGP--but god damn if he isn't having a career season right now, run stopping abilities be damned.
RANGA+ 1,210 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) Yeah he's on fire so far this year. Watch him get like 3 sacks in the second half of the season though lol. If he does break the record, however, it would be hard for him not to be named DPOTY. Even if the Vikings finish 2-14... AL_Royalty 489 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) Record seems to have a lot to do with individual awards, but if Allen keeps playing like he is right now it will be hard to justify him not getting this award. I don't know that he will though. Every year someone is on pace to break some kind of single season record in the NFL, but it only happens a small portion of the time. That being said, I'm rooting for Jared Allen. After all, he was the best Chiefs pass rusher since Derrick Thomas, and he's got the talent to pull this off. oochymp 2,393 Posted October 25, 2011 to me DPOTY and OPOTY are individual awards so I don't care how bad your team is, if you're the best offensive player or the best defensive player in the league you should win the award, but MVP is an entirely different question
BwareDWare94 723 Posted October 25, 2011 I need to see him notch at least one more sack next week before I'm convinced he can push the record, but I'm not sure he'll do that against Cam Newton. His run-stopping abilities have never been as bad as people thought. The guy is a playmaker and that's that. I'd love to see him be the bright spot in a bad Vikings 2011-12 season, but I just don't see it happening right. DWare was on pace to crush the record one year, too, but ended up at 20. KiLaSix9+ 398 Posted October 26, 2011 Yeah, like oochy said, these are individual awards. If he breaks Strahan's record, there is no way he doesn't win DPOY.
Glanvilles Grits 142 Posted October 26, 2011 If Jared Allen breaks Strahans record this season, I will wear a sig all off-season of a TGP members choosing. ANY Signature. That's how sure I am that while this is impressive, I don't think he does it.

Not saying Allen is gonna break the record, but if he does, you'd be horrified at what the masses here can come up with...and it's a long offseason... Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted October 26, 2011 I think we can all agree, that if he breaks the record that he is going to be arguably the favorite for DPOTY. But what if he hits 20... 21? Do you still give him the award?

Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted October 26, 2011 Bring it on me then. It's not happening lol :grinno: Haha. You say that now... But I can just imagine the kind of sigs you would be wearing. And they aren't pretty, either.

blotsfan 2,112 Posted October 27, 2011 Will Favre be there to lie down and give the record to him?
Thanatos 2,847 Posted October 27, 2011 Will Favre be there to lie down and give the record to him? While Rodgers may not give him nearly as many sacks as Favre, that's kinda countered by the fact that he plays the Bears and their horrid O-line twice this year, and Cutler will give him 2 or 3 a game. Do you still give him the award? I'm not saying that if he gets close but doesn't break the record that he shouldn't get the award. If he's the best in the running then he should get it, but if he doesn't get the record and someone else is more deserving—like, say, Brandon Flowers... —then it goes to the most deserving player. Either way though, I think he's in the conversation. Bring it on me then. It's not happening lol :grinno: Man, I really hope he gets the record.
