It's been challenging, but in a good kind of way that is making me a better and more well rounded person. And overall I am just really excited about my future here. Congratz! The guys that work nights are all awesome, the owner is simply revered. We take shots on the clock (we pay for the shooters). It's so laid back and easy for the money we make and yet everyone legitimately cares about doing a great job and getting shit done. Just awesome. BwareDWare94 723 Posted December 1, 2015 I start a new job tomorrow at a seed plant. It's a seasonal gig where I can leave once the farm gets into gear. It has a normal schedule. 7am to whenever the close is (I haven't heard yet but I'm hoping for 10 hour days 5 days a week so there's overtime). Also, with the price of land and the sheer difficulty it'd take for me to get into farming as my only job without waiting for my dad to retire, I'm hoping there's potential for full time at the gig. I'd keep the one quarter of land that I rent (if my landlord agrees to new contracts as the years go on) and continue to help my dad on the side. Sarge+ 3,436 Posted December 15, 2015 As many of you know, I have toyed around with the idea of teaching ESL for a few years now. In fact, last December I went to Chile, but things didn't work out. But that was because I didn't go with a program. I just went there on my own on a whim. I should have known it was a stupid idea, but at least I tried. At least I learned something from that experience. So now I am going through a program that is a co-operation between the U.S. government and the government of Colombia. I'm leaving in April, and I will be there for at least a year. I get to pick which city I want to teach in. There's Bogotá, the capital and largest city. It's their NYC. Tons of nightlife and culture. Crappy weather there though. There's Medellín, which was once the home of Pablo Escobar and his rogue organization of drug cartels. Nice weather there, and a lot less crime than in the past. There's also Barranquilla, which is a beach city on the Caribbean coast. Very hot weather, nice people, and relatively untouched by foreigners. Could be an interesting place. I don't even have to decide where to go until I arrive. The first 2 weeks are mandatory in Bogotá for orientation, and then we go to our chosen cities to teach. I wish I would have done this last year, but, better late than never. I can't give up on my dream just because it went wrong one time. My Spanish is a lot better than it was a year ago, too, which will help me out a lot when I get there. I've been reading books about the theories and ideas behind teaching ESL, so now I actually have somewhat of a frame of reference. On top of that, made Dean's list this semester and finally brought my GPA above a 3.0. OSUViking 505 Posted December 27, 2015 So... I opened up to some friends and family about my diagnosis with depression, and it went way better than I thought. I didn't anticipate people understanding my situation, but they all expressed total support. I didn't run into anyone who told me to "just snap out of it". I'm optimistic about the medication and also will begin seeing a therapist. Basically, long term outlook = positive. RazorStar 4,025 Posted December 27, 2015 The attitude towards depression has really changed in the past ten years or so. I remember when I first went to an actual counselor that cost actual money (125 canadian for an hour session) his response to me was "yeah you're depressed but you're going through puberty so you'll just get over it." Needless to say I have never felt more cheated in my life. Glad to hear your support network is so strong. I'm on the attempt to mend mine, but I know I'm the biggest obstacle to actually achieving that. Still managed to spend christmas eve with my mother and the rest of the family somehow, after not talking to them for nearly four months. I don't know if I'm just doing it out of guilt, but it was nice to have a family who I didn't resent for a little while. 4 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I hate this state...but when you're starting salary is around 60k? That's hard to pass up. I said fuck it a few months ago, not really expecting anything to happen, but I passed their written test and physical and now all I have to do is the interview. Who knows what'll happen and I honestly don't know if I'll do it simply because I want to be back down South with my family more than ever.
