Eagles hire Chip Kelly

Recommended Posts

Interesting quote from Bradley. He thought he was going to be the next Eagles coach...

It's been a whirlwind week for Bradley. The Seattle Seahawks lost on Sunday, and he was in Philadelphia Tuesday for an interview. He was planning to leave the city that night, but the Eagles told him to stay in town overnight. At that point, Bradley thought he might have had the Eagles job locked up.

"There was a thought it could be a possibility," Bradley said Friday.

Instead, Chip Kelly got the job with Philadelphia.

A few pages from Chip's coaching manual he used at Oregon. It's a little long but a fantastic read.

Quite an interesting read. Especially where he talks about a QB's mechanics throwing out of the shotgun.

I don't wanna make a new thread for this, but if this is true,we're gonna have a very interesting situation in Philly.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that ex-Browns head coach Pat Shurmur is expected to join the Eagles as offensive coordinator.

It's a bit of an odd fit. Chip Kelly will obviously be calling the shots in Philadelphia's uptempo, exciting offense, while Shurmur has showed little creativity in his stints as offensive play-caller with the Rams and Browns over the past four seasons. Shurmur and Kelly have no previous connection, but Shurmur spent ten seasons in The City of Brotherly Love from 1999-2008.

Doesn't make sense at all. Is Pat gonna move towards Kelly and his philosophy... Or is Kelly going to be adjusting a lot more than any of us think?

lolwut? Why would they hire Shurmur? Him and Kelly are complete opposites. I assumed Shurmur wasn't going to get a OC job after Reid decided to pass on him.

Shurmur and his 1 yard passes should be exciting to watch. I don't venture over to Eagles boards often, but most of the fans seem happy with this.

I really don't see how this is an awful move?

Its not great by any means, but how exactly is it bad? One guy likes to throw the ball a lot, but the guy who likes to throw the ball a lot probably won't be the one calling plays...

Because their philosophies don't mesh at all. When your head coach is supposedly bringing this new and crazy tempo offense to the league, you don't think to hire an OC who has a very very opposite approach. That isn't to say they won't be successful. Because obviously either guy or even both are going to have to adapt to each other... It's just a very odd move that doesn't make a ton of sense. We will see in the coming days, weeks, and months how all of this will fit together.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Chip Kelly's contract with the Eagles is for five years and $32.5 million, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.

The deal is worth $6.5 million annually and obviously was the main factor in Kelly's decision to leave Oregon and make the jump to the NFL. The Eagles are banking on Kelly's creative offensive mind to help turn around a franchise that hasn't won a playoff game since 2008. Kelly has no previous NFL experience. Jan 20 - 4:48 PM

It was either pay Kelly the big bucks, or hire somebody else. And it's obvious the Eagles wanted Kelly from the start. In the end, they got their man. Boom. Or. Bust.

Browns CEO Joe Banner said hiring Chip Kelly was too big of a "gamble."

"We removed ourselves from the process," said Banner. "We really liked Chip. But you could see he was uncertain what he wanted to do. The fact he committed to Tampa Bay last year, backed out, then seemed all year to be leaning toward going to the NFL, then being so uncertain with us, we just felt it was too big a gamble. If there was no ambivalence, we may have offered him the job." Banner just sounds like a sore loser after losing out to his old pal Howie Roseman in Philly. If Kelly would have wanted to go to the Browns, Banner and company would have gladly handed him a blank check. Instead, they settled for an intriguing threesome of Rob Chudzinski, Norv Turner, and Ray Horton.

FOX Philadelphia's Howard Eskin reports 49ers DBs coach Ed Donatell is "likely" to be hired as Chip Kelly's defensive coordinator.

Eskin's report comes via "two NFL sources." CSN Philly reported Monday that Donatell had "surfaced" as a candidate. Donatell has seven years of experience as an NFL coordinator, but hasn't run a defense at the highest level since 2006. He served as the University of Washington's DC in 2008. Kelly is believed to be interested in installing a 3-4 defense, but Donatell is known for using a 4-3.

Eagles hire Dave Fipp as special teams coordinator

The Eagles aren't confirming hires of Chip Kelly's staff until the entire group is finished, but you don't have to look much further than the sidelines of the Senior Bowl to see who some of the new guys are. One is former Dolphins assistant special teams coordinator Dave Fipp, who has been hired as the new Eagles special teams coordinator. The move was confirmed by Miami head coach Joe Philbin.

Fipp has all the makings of a fine up and coming special teams coordinator and has worked in some fantastic systems. He joined the Dolphins in 2011 and helped turn them around from the 24th ranked ST unit to #2 in 2011 (according to Rick Gosselin's yearly ranking). The Dolphins trailed only the 49ers, which is where Fipp happened to work the year prior.

Fipp was a standout special teams player himself at Arizona and has been coaching defense and special teams since 1998. He has served as a defensive coordinator at the college level, but this will be his first coordinator level gig in the NFL. He's been an assistant special teams coach since 2008.

As Ruben Frank points out, Fipp and Kelly have known one another for years.

Obviously, you never know how a guy will respond when he makes the jump up to boss, but Fipp was clearly on a track to be a coordinator and has certainly earned the job. He's got a big task ahead rehabbing an Eagles special teams that hasn't been good since John Harbaugh was running it.

Today's random news tidbit:

While at Oregon, new Eagles coach Chip Kelly stated that he believes big hands are an essential attribute for a quarterback.

"That is the biggest coaching point to finding a quarterback," Kelly said. "How big are his hands, and how well can he control the football? The height of the quarterback is not the important thing. No one playing quarterback throws over the line. They throw trough lanes in the linemen. The important thing is the size of their hands." At 10 5/8 inches, Nick Foles had the biggest hands of any quarterback at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine.

Philadelphia Eagles taking time with Michael Vick

The hiring of Chip Kelly as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles widely was viewed as a positive development for Michael Vick's chances of staying on board. The question that remained was if the team would cut Vick by Feb. 6, before the quarterback was due a $3 million roster bonus.

Vote for the top 10 plays of the 2012 season. More ...

According to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora, however, that $3 million guarantee is "not a concern at this time." Kelly still is doing his film-study and analysis of Vick to determine how he fits in the spread offense.

In other words, it's worth the price tag to perform the proper due diligence on the quarterback situation as opposed to rushing to judgment. Once the Eagles pick up the option, Vick likely will be asked to take a pay cut on the remaining $13.5 million salary. If Vick balks -- or if Kelly decides to go in a different direction at quarterback -- the Eagles could wind up shopping the 32-year-old once the league year begins March 13.

It's hard to find fault with the Eagles' plan. Factor in a weak quarterback draft class with at least a half-dozen teams unsettled at the position, and Vick could bring back a mid-round pick in April.

Seems Chip is giving Vick a chance.
