49ers Want To Trade Harbaugh: Raiders, Jets Interested

Recommended Posts

The Raiders are the favorite to trade for 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter reported in a tweet Sunday.

Schefter quoted an NFL source, and also said the Jets are said to be interested.

Harbaugh is rumored to be on his way out in San Francisco and would presumably have some say over where he is headed. He is in the fourth year of a five-year contract.

I am ready for this Harbaugh drama to be over. Maybe Oakland can finallyput it all together.

#49ers wins, including playoffs, in 3-plus season Harbaugh era: 48. From 2003-10: 46.

You don't know what ya got til it's gone.

I'd take him at this point. At least he's fiery.

Why on earth is SF doing this lol?

More importantly, who is going to replace him?

Add another name to the list of suitors.

Trading for San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is a possibility the Atlanta Falcons reportedly are considering.

Jason LaCanfora (it must not be true)

The 49ers believe they have several capable coaches under contract now, according to numerous league sources, and if Harbaugh departs, defensive line coach Jim Tomsula and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio would be at the top of their list of candidates to replace him. League sources said that Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase is seen as a top external candidate, but the team is expected to thoroughly explore its internal candidates as well.

I can like the 49ers again if this happens.

On the downside, it means I'm going to have to dislike a team I hadn't intended.

Thought the NFL banned trading coaches.

That's what I thought.

After the Bucs traded for Gruden.

I am not sure it's officially called a 'trade' or maybe it is.. I dunno. But the Chiefs gave up a pick to hire Herm Edwards while he was under contract with the Jets and that was a number of years after the Gruden deal.

Michigan also "conveniently" fired Brady Hoke today. I think Harbaugh stays in the NFL, but you definitely can't count a reunion with the Wolverines out.

"The league's new policy is not restricted to head coaches. It prevents draft picks from being used to sign anyone under contract with another team, including assistants, front-office personnel or scouts."

Herm wasn't under contract technically speaking because Jets agreed to let him out of it in exchange for a 4th rounder or w/e it was. So I guess the 9ers could do the same in this case/

Profootballtalk reports 49ers DL coach Jim Tomsula is the early favorite to replace Jim Harbaugh as San Francisco's head coach in 2015.

Mike Holmgren is another name mentioned by PFT's Mike Florio. GM Trent Baalke tried to hire Bill Parcells for the job before giving it to Harbaugh, indicating age isn't a concern. Tomsula, however, has long been linked to the job. He's been in San Francisco for eight seasons now, has the respect of the players, and most importantly (in Baalke's eyes) is unlikely to have the ego of Harbaugh. Tomsula was linked to the Vikings' and Browns' head-coaching openings last winter.

When it first became obvious Brady Hoke wouldn’t be back next year as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, a report suggested that the folks at Ann Arbor were more interested in John Harbaugh (who didn’t go to Michigan) than Jim (who did).

Now, Michigan apparently has a keen interest in the soon-to-be-former 49ers coach.

Per multiple reports, Michigan has offered Harbaugh the job. The package leaked to the media would pay Harbaugh $8 million per year over six years.

That’s far more than Harbaugh currently makes in San Francisco, and far more than the 49ers had offered in failed negotiations on a new deal. The impasse arose, as one source with knowledge of the talks previously told PFT, because Harbaugh wanted to be paid like a Super Bowl-winning coach without, you know, winning a Super Bowl.

If the offer from Michigan, where it’s easy to finance a large coaching salary since the players get jack squat and free snacks, is real, he’d be paid like a Super Bowl-winning coach without winning a Super Bowl and without ever competing for one for as long as he’s at Michigan.

The leak and its origin suggest that Harbaugh’s agent hopes to use the offer as leverage in talks with interested NFL teams. If Michigan will pay $8 million per year, how much will the Raiders, Dolphins, or other interested team fork over? With the talent gap among teams as narrow as ever, a great coach can be the difference between mediocrity and a championship; great coaches at the NFL are worth far more than they currently get.

The possibility that Harbaugh will leave for Michigan also pressures Jed York and company to be very reasonable in any trade talks regarding Harbaugh. If he chooses to go back to college, the 49ers get nothing.

Then again, the 49ers may prefer that outcome, since they wouldn’t have to worry about Harbaugh finishing with another franchise that which he started in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, some have suggested that Harbaugh wouldn’t use his alma mater as leverage for a better NFL job. Why shouldn’t he? Harbaugh played football there at a high level. In return he got jack squat, without the free snacks.

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the 49ers are looking for a young offensive specialist to replace Jim Harbaugh as head coach.
49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was originally believed to be the favorite to replace Harbaugh, but after watching quarterback Colin Kaepernick regress over the course of 2014, San Francisco may look to someone more offensively minded to lead the ship. Mort specifically mentioned Patriots OC Josh McDaniels and Broncos OC Adam Gase as possible candidates. Dec 20 - 11:11 AM
