Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted October 24, 2011 (edited) in 2006 it went to Jason Taylor of the 6-10 Dolphins, the Vikings may end up a bit worse than that, but this is a purely individual award so it shouldn't matter if the guy's on a bad team. Except for the fact that only 2 players in NFL history have won this award when their team has won under 6 games. Forty years... It's happened twice. And that was to a Hall of Famer (LT) and Hall of Fame finalist (Cortez Kennedy). To be the best defensive player, I feel like you need to have some kind of impact or vital importance to the team you play for. That's a hard point to establish when you are 1 - 6. He's having a great season, one of the best of his career (not just sack wise)... But again. Unless he breaks the record or VERY close to it. I don't think it's happening. Patriots2994 43 Posted October 24, 2011 INTs are such an overrated stat. I mean... NE's Kyle Arrington (who pretty much blows) was leading the league in picks before this week, so yeah lol. And I'd totally call homer on Phail (y'know that's the routine for a Dallas fan saying his own player should win an award ),but shit man... I've gotten a chance to watch Sean Lee play a bit, and he's been pretty fucking impressive. That dude is GOOD. Arrington blows? Really? Kyle Arrington: 28 targets for 14 receptions that total 235 yards for 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions for a passer rating of 51.0. He's giving up only half the passes thrown his way and has intercepted four of them. If the Patriots safeties were better he wouldn't have the big yard total. Arrington is very underrated. westbrookforsix 28 Posted October 24, 2011 LMAO at Jared Allen being one of the best all around DE's "for years now". That's absolutely insane. He leads all players under 30 in career sacks. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/sacks_career.htm 1
Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted October 24, 2011 He leads all players under 30 in career sacks. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/sacks_career.htm How does sack total prove that he is an all around DE? If anything, that proves my point... He's one dimensional. He's a pass rush specialist, nothing more. He was in KC, and has been since coming to Minnesota. I do admit he is improving his game this year and becoming that all around player. But anything before these first 7 games, he could get to the QB and that's it. Crash3021 101 Posted October 24, 2011 NaVorro Bowman (sp?) should really be in the mix. Indeed, how he's playing right now it's basically like having another Patrick Willis on the field. 1

The Vikings also were a great run defense before him and they've stayed very strong during his time there, even after the Williams wall fell. They currently rank 4th, and last year, in their "down" year, the run D was ranked 9th. He plays with so much effort and he always has.

KiLaSix9+ 398 Posted January 3, 2012 I'd like to throw in Jason Pierre-Paul into this conversation. This kid is insanely good. He reminds me of Jevon Kearse. He finished the season 4th in sacks , 1st in tackles among defensive lineman and 1st in passes defended among d-lineman. All of this in 12 games started!! NYGIANTSFLYHIGH 1 Posted January 4, 2012 Call me a homer if you must, but I would love to see JPP win it. Its going to be hard to pass on Allen with his 22 sacks this season, but as some of you mentioned the 4 win season may deter that. JPP finished 4th in the league in sacks with 16.5. 1st in tackles amonst D lineman with 86 (20 more than Allen). 1st in the league amonst DL in pass deflections with 6. 3 forced fumbles, and the biggest play of our season in week 14 or 15 with the FG block against the Cowboys to seal a win as time expired. All of this starting only 12 games, and splitting time with Osi 8 games this year. He just turned 23 on Sunday and its his 2nd season in the league. Ill be the first to admit I was looking in to purchasing a fire arm to go meet Jerry Reese with when we made this pick 2 years ago, but I am really regretting that choice now lol
Glanvilles Grits 142 Posted January 4, 2012 For me now that the season is over, it's between Jared Allen and Kyle Arrington. He's done just as well as Woodson this year in coverage. But I have to go with Allen. And for those trying to say that Allen can't defend against the run, I'd like to see the games you are watching with Allen. That's what the amazing part about his 22 sack season has been this season, he's actually been helping stop the run really effectively this season.
BwareDWare94 723 Posted January 4, 2012 It has to be Allen. He'd have taken the sack record if the Vikings had been able to get the lead on Chicago in the fourth quarter, but as soon as he got #22 Chicago started running the ball and throwing quick routes every time. Jared Allen was the best individual defensive player in football this year. He deserves the award.
Bay 2,003 Posted January 4, 2012 Jared Allen and Kyle Arrington. :rofl You can't be serious.
seanbrock 1,684 Posted January 4, 2012 If I had a vote it would go to Justin Smith. The guy is the key piece to the best defense in the league. He's probably the best 3-4 DE of all time at this point. The guy gives you 6-8 sacks, eats up blockers for other pass rushers (see Aldon Smith) and still be dominant against the run (1 rush TD against the 9ers all year. He'll never get the recognition he deserves though.

seanbrock 1,684 Posted January 4, 2012 btw guys, racking up tackles doesn't make you a great run defender. How many of those tackles come after the ball carrier gains 5 yards? I'll admit Allen is having his strongest year as player even and has been very good against the run this year, but to say that he's been the best overall DE in the loeague for years is ridiculous. Anyone who knows football and has watched the Vikings since Allen arrived would see Allen running 15 yards up field every snap and Chad Greenway(massively underrated btw) consistently bail him out. I think the argument could be that when The Williams Wall was in Minny the Vikings didn't need Allen to focus on the run and just had him all out rush the QB because he wasn't needed in run support. After this year I'd say that it could be a relatively strong point. Having said that I still think that overall Justin Smith is far more valuable and far better than Allen and really any DE in the league regardless of scheme. The guy just is elite to the point where you're talking about HOF worthy in every single aspect of his game and he's been doing that for what? 4 years now. He won't win it but Smith is the best defensive player in the league and has been for a few years whether he gets love or not.

Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted January 4, 2012 Justin Smith is a beast, but stats win DPotY and Allen deserves it and has been better than Smith this year. I disagree. My hatred for Jared Allen is well documented, however... He has indeed had an amazing season. He has surprisingly transformed into a much better overall player instead of your typical elite pass rusher. And it was by far, the best season of his entire career. I give him a ton of props, and he deserves consideration. But Justin Smith does everything. Has for the last 4 years or so and everyone on the San Fran D is better because of him. He doesn't get the fancy stats, and for that reason, voters probably will favor Allen... But Justin Smith is more deserving.

Defensive linemen won the award before sacks showed up on the stat sheet any more than a tackle. I don't think we should accept the DPOY awardgoing the way of the pro bowl. DPOY should be for the best defensive player in the league and that is Justin Smith.

If DeMarcus Ware or Jason Babin had gotten to 22 sacks, you'd be declaring them the obvious winner. You just don't like Jared Allen. Justin Smith has other beasts around him. Jared Allen has an aging Kevin Williams who isn't half the player he used to be and a couple of scrubs on his DL. Greenway's good, but EJ Henderson isn't himself anymore and Erin Henderson was a first time starter. Allen had gaping holes on his defense that other offenses were able to attack and he still racked up a ridiculous season. He played the best of any defensive player in the league, so he should win it.
