Lockout to be lifted

This is probably temporary, but at least it's a start.

Yeah, still exciting nonetheless. Hopefully it doesn't get overturned in the appeal.

This basically means nothing.

No free agency, no trades...yet. There is no union this just means players can go work out in the team gyms and talk to their coaches, and of course this is still going to be appealed by the NFL. And if it's not granted it still means nothing.

Anything short of the headline "New CBA Signed" is a disappointment.

This is not what they are saying on NFLN and what I am reading, Barracuda.

The owners are, most likely, as we speak putting in paper work with the 8th circuit court and/or Judge Nelson for a stay which would basically keep everything the same until an appeal is heard which could take months. But if neither grant the owners a stay the owners are forced to lift a lockout and put in temp. rules (basically temp. CBA) until a new CBA is worked out and agreed upon.

For a lot of teams sake hopefully the stay/appeal won't go through. There's lots of new coaches that need to get their players some playbooks/info.

One step closer to football starting on schedule, sounds good to me.

Everything I've been reading seems like we won't have a ruling on the stay until Friday, which means we don't have any players getting traded on or before Thursday night.

SI has a great article about the ruling: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/nfl/04/25/judge.lifts.lockout.ap/index.html?eref=sihp

the most interesting line I think is a quote from Judge Nelson at the bottom of the article: "This particular employment dispute is far from a purely private argument over compensation." That opens the door for the courts to do a lot more without concern of setting a new precedent for future labor issues in other businesses.

Though it's not a fix, it is a step in the right direction. I'm at least glad the bus isn't in park anymore.

According to nflradio, the judge just ruled against the stay of the lockout. Now they'll try to get the eighth circuit court to grant a stay.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The federal judge who lifted the NFL lockout dealt another blow

to the league late Wednesday, denying its request to put her ruling on hold and

guaranteeing more limbo for the $9 billion business.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson wrote that the NFL "has not met its burden for a stay pending appeal, expedited or otherwise." She dismissed the NFL's argument that it is facing irreparable harm because of her decision Monday to end the 45-day lockout.

"In short, the world of 'chaos' the NFL claims it has been thrust into -- essentially the 'free-market' system this nation otherwise willfully operates under -- is not compelled by this court's order," Nelson wrote.

Nelson ruled that the league year must start immediately, but said no team is required to sign free agents. She did not specify any rules on trades, causing a gray area.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, NFL free agency and player trades are "highly unlikely" until sometime next week.

Schefter also says undrafted free agent signings are unlikely to occur immediately after the draft, as they normally would. So the Eagles can forget about getting a first-round pick for Kevin Kolb, let alone anyone signing Nnamdi Asomugha. NFL agents have been making calls to teams, but owners and GMs aren't answering. Only draft pick trades will be allowed this weekend.

They may not be likely... but if it were to happen...

1) It's allowed

2) the league has to recognize the trade as valid

Correct?

I'm far from a legal expert but I would assume so.

Per Rotoworld.com:

The NFL lockout went back into effect Friday after the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis granted the owners' side a "stay" of Judge Susan Nelson's lockout injunction.

If you're confused, just know you aren't alone. Teams are now kicking players out of their facilities, and free agency and trades are unlikely to be allowed for at least a week, if not 6-8. The Eighth Circuit is known to be a Republican-heavy court notorious for conservative decisions, so no one should be surprised by its decision. Kevin Kolb won't be traded during the draft, and free agent Nnamdi Asomugha isn't signing anywhere anytime soon.

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN just said that report is incorrect, and since I've yet to see it confirmed by any other news outlet I'm inclined to doubt the Rotoworld report

Let the fun begin.

Profootballtalk is hearing "initial rumblings" that the NFL would considering shutting down all operations if the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals upholds Judge Susan Nelson's ruling to lift the lockout.

Under this scenario, the owners wouldn't be violating court orders because they would essentially be shutting down their business. The owners have backed themselves into a corner the past couple of months. This would be their last-ditch effort to force the players to agree to a new collective bargaining agreement rather than accepting supervision from the courts. As PFT points out, "there's a long way to go before things would ever get to that point."
